Next month's opening of the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools will be auspicious for a reason other than its both storied and infamous history as the former Ambassador Hotel, where the Democratic presidential contender was assassinated in 1968.
With an eye-popping price tag of $578 million, it will mark the inauguration of the nation's most expensive public school ever.
The K-12 complex to house 4,200 students has raised eyebrows across the country as the creme de la creme of "Taj Mahal" schools, $100 million-plus campuses boasting both architectural panache and deluxe amenities.
"There's no more of the old, windowless cinderblock schools of the '70s where kids felt, 'Oh, back to jail,'" said Joe Agron, editor-in-chief of American School & University, a school construction journal. "Districts want a showpiece for the community, a really impressive environment for learning."
Not everyone is similarly enthusiastic.
"New buildings are nice, but when they're run by the same people who've given us a 50 percent dropout rate, they're a big waste of taxpayer money," said Ben Austin, executive director of Parent Revolution who sits on the California Board of Education. "Parents aren't fooled."

No worries...the feds will bail out CA. It’s just a matter of time. After all, CA is too big to fail.
Half a billion dollars for one school?!?!!??
Right - and they want us to ‘get over 9/11’ while they name a high school after Robert F. Kennedy...
They may, but it will fail.
California’s day of reckoning is coming and nobody is going to stop it.
You taxpayers just need to turn up the spigot. :)
Bureaucrats in action - with other people's money.
Is it any mystery why we're broke?
That’s almost $140K/student. With a 5% interest-only mortgage, that’s $7K/student/year, just for the building, not including maintenance and utilities. No wonder California’s broke.
Tar and feathers should be making a comeback about now.
Hey, it cost a lot of money to turn young skulls full of
mush into good little neo-Marxist Obots.
Is “Social Justice” the new name for COMMUNISM???
“New buildings are nice, but when they’re run by the same people who’ve given us a 50 percent dropout rate, they’re a big waste of taxpayer money.....”
Good summation if there ever was one.
L.A. = Beirut.
With an eye-popping price tag of $578 million,
1. They already had a building and it still cost that much?
2. I wonder how much it would cost to turn the Texas Schoolbook Depository into a school.
DRUDGE just picked this up with a Big Header and photo.....woohoo
Will this be like the South LA hospital called the MLK hospital
that cost half a billion dollars in 1984
and stands empty today.
Do you know why?
I’ll bet you can guess but you will not find the answer on Google...
Is Social Justice the new name for COMMUNISM???
How in the world were kids ever able to learn to read, write, and cipher in simple one-room schoolhouses? I mean, without computers on every desk, giant TVs in every room, Olympic-size swimming pools, and Astroturf playing fields, how is it even possible to learn the simplest of subjects?
What will they do to top this extravagance?
Art doesn’t HAVE to be ugly to be impressive.
File bankruptcy as a state....
That school is actually a different one - a few miles from this new one. It opened last year and cost a mere $232 million, but that’s cause it’s only for high schoolers, not K-12. Its name is “Central Los Angeles Area High School #9.”
will they have a memorial of where he was shot?
they will build it then not have the money to run it.
Thanks for the pics. The cost is obscene and the building really ugle. And they had to get someone from Austria to design it! They make me sick.
” And they had to get someone from Austria to design it! “
Anybody remember where the Governator is from??
The pricey schools have come during a sensitive period for the nation's second-largest school system: Nearly 3,000 teachers have been laid off over the past two years, the academic year and programs have been slashed. The district also faces a $640 million shortfall and some schools persistently rank among the nation's
What are they thinking - its only money?
Yes, I realize it's a different school. It's the one in the picture that Drudge has on his site. In that sense, Drudge's posting is misleading.
But it's illustrative of the thinking of the LA school district.
“Is Social Justice the new name for COMMUNISM???”
That, and “reparations”.
Reparations. That’s it. After prop 187 was killed in the late 90’s a big group of lefty Hispanics gained a lot of political power and formed this big ethnic network, allied with the usual progressive dirtbags in the region. These schools are fruits of their labor.
And they’re not being paid for by the people in the areas they serve, they’re being paid for mostly by the resented whites who dared to try to protect their own state and cities.
I don’t know if you’re familiar with the area, but all three of these schools are in hardcore illegal alien territory. Also just a few miles away is the high school where that reconquista teacher Ron Gochez teaches. The whole area has been handed over.
Well, not exactly or entirely handed over.
We still need to pay for it.
Let me see, $850 million for the Martin Luther King Hospital, $230 million for one school, $400 million for another school, $500 million for the next school in such a great location...
Gee, pretty soon it all adds up.
Pretty soon you’re talking real money.
“Is Social Justice the new name for COMMUNISM???”
No, it means “My brother got me the job.”
I don’t know why and I know i can’t find it on Google anymore even if I wanted to use Google.
So tell me..... why???
Couldn't that goal be better accomplished by graduating students who are proficient in the three "Rs"? The only thing the building is a showcase for, is the architect and builder.
Biggest waste of money ever.
Here is what they SHOULD of done.
They should of spent 78 Million building the school, then put the other 500 Million in a CD drawing 5% interest which would of made them 25 Million a year in interest. With that 25 Million a year they could of hired 200 college level professors with PhD’s to teach the 4,000 students there with a class size of 20 kids per teacher and paid them $100,000 each AND still had 5 million a year for other expenses like utilities. If they had done this... they would still have the 500 Million and probably would of been able to cut school district property taxes and would of had the best teachers in the nation teaching their kids.
A building never taught anyone anything, the teachers are the critical component.
Maybe this will be a learning aid that wakes him up from his apolitical stupor, and finally makes him angry.
Can’t wait to see their “artistic” gang grafiti!
Great question. From time to time, I have asked the social justice advocates for a definition. Typically they arent prepared to answer.
As best I can determine, what these folks want is, at a minimum, some kind of guaranteed income for everyone in the country. No question in my mind that others are outright socialists.
Whenever I heard somebody say the term 'social justice', I want to say to the person, "you left out the 'ist'."
I hear this term a lot in my Church.
There's an entrepreneurial IDEA!!!! Open a "TAR & FEATHER" Business then Franchise it Nationwide.
That really is obscene. It is a school not a monument to the school board.
I can’t wait to see this bumper sticker in LA!
MY Son Is A Dropout From The
Robert F. Kennedy Community School!
Yes - a lovely memorial to Sirhan Sirhan will be built to remember him
Can’t be discussed on FR or anywhere else.
Know anyone near South Central?
Guess you could start with the spitting on, and biting of, the doctors and nurses who went there to help.
Like the Superdome during Katrina in New Orleans I guess.
