The Obama administration said it would focus its enforcement of illegal immigration laws by targeting workplace activities, but a recent report shows that while audits of employers are slightly up over the Bush administration, worker arrests are down drastically since the end of 2008.

Under Obama, employer audits are up 50 percent, fines have tripled to almost $3 million and the number of executives arrested is slightly up over the Bush administration.

I am thinking some of these arrests are lower because many have moved to other states and or not staying in one place very long. I am sure amongst the illegals they are kept informed as to the duration of their employment and when the authorities could actually crack down.

Well, at least Clinton never declared that he wanted a "new America" where spanish was heard on every street...

We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We're a major source of Latin music, journalism and culture.

Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago or West New York, New Jersey ... and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende.

For years our nation has debated this change -- some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.

Our future cannot be separated from the future of Latin America.

As I speak, we are celebrating the success of democracy in Mexico.

George Bush from a campaign speech in Miami, August 2000.

You can read the speech here.

Here is an excerpt of a good critique of that speech:

In equating our intimate historic bonds to our mother country and to Canada with our ties to Mexico, W. shows a staggering ignorance of the civilizational facts of life. The reason we are so close to Britain and Canada is that we share with them a common historical culture, language, literature, and legal system, as well as similar standards of behavior, expectations of public officials, and so on. Hate to defend Obama, but this is not a bad approach. Making an example of the employers who hire illegals is much more effective that arresting individual illegals (and letting the employers off the hook).

It is the way to go. Fines and jail time are what it will take. Just fines will be factored in as a business expense unless people are held accountable.

The other place to hit it would be schools. If the schools can check the immunization records of all students, they could easily as a parallel process check if that child is a US citizen.

All this equates to in a stealth "tax" on businesses.

Their are stiff "fines" for opting out of ObamaCare. The rich liberals will simply pay the "fine."

Do you think Babs Streisand is signing up for ObamaCare?

Nope. Pay the fine, do what they want.

The illegals will just move on to the next job, until their employer gets "fined."

If enough employers get fined, eventually, there will be no next job.

Of course, many will come here, have an anchor baby, and just live of the state.

Ship them back. Use stimulus money and get a double bang for the buck. They say it can’t be done? I say try it.

Perhaps, but it will never be implemented beyond "token enforcement".

I live in Arizona and can tell you that the Feds are worthless as far as any immigration enforcement. They'd rather focus on financially crippling our state over laws that are based directly on their books rather than find an actual solution.

It's past time to part ways with them.

The way I heard it, the illegals were arrested and then released. They had the employers and the illegals but let them go.

I wouldn't be so haughty about George "I never met an illegal alien I didn't love" Bush's record on immigration enforcement. His record is clear --he loved Mexicans more than he loved Americans.

For regular Americans that's true. But he loves America's ruling class more than anybody, and that ruling class includes Democrats like his wife.

You're absolutely correct. Bush comes from a long line of Wall Street bankers. Everything he did while in office, he did to benefit them. The Mexican illegal aliens were simply a means to an end.

You're exactly right.

Oh, it's not being done enough, I think we can all agree upon that, but it's much more efficient to make employers realize the law is being enforced. The jobs dry up, the illegals go home, and that’ll take care of a large (although not all) part of the problem.

We put high voltage lethal electric fences around prisons and there is a 0% escape rate. I say we put up a high voltage fence at the boarders..then we will also have a 0% illegal alien rate.

I don’t think the government cares about illegals as long as they get their payroll taxes. The audits are just a way to raise funds through fines, etc...
