Huckabee: Don't Punish Children of Illegal Immigrants (RINO ALERT) (Huckster for DREAM Act?)
CBS News - Political Hotsheet ^ | 2010-08-16 | Stephanie Condon

Posted on 08/23/2010 8:57:20 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Former GOP presidential contender and potential 2012 candidate Mike Huckabee said Wednesday that he does not support a repeal of the 14th Amendment -- a part of the Constitution other Republican leaders have called into question recently because it guarantees citizenship for children born in the United States, regardless of their parents' immigration status.

Huckabee said in an interview Wednesday that he does not support a repeal, NPR reports.

While the former Arkansas governor said, "I'm not for an amnesty program," he added, "You do not punish a child for something the parent did."

(snip)

Huckabee told NPR that the nation is better off giving all children opportunities to succeed as citizens, even if they were not born in the United States.

"The question is: Is [an undocumented child born outside of the U.S.] better off going to college and becoming a neurosurgeon or a banker or whatever he might become, and becoming a taxpayer, and in the process having to apply for and achieve citizenship, or should we make him pick tomatoes?" Huckabee said. "I think it's better if he goes to college and becomes a citizen."

But it is OK to punish children of U.S. citizens who didn’t happen to be born in your state and must pay out of state tuition?

Allow me to translate: "Let's generously award behavior we are trying to discourage, and put our own children at a disadvantage at the same time. Plus, I get to feel virtuous for my generosity."

Patooey. Every time that guy talks, I think of Elmer Gantry.

When he was Governor, he wanted ILLEGAL KIDS to have SCHOLARSHIPS! No kidding.

He doesn’t get it. Let the ILLEGAL KIDS get in line for citizenship instead of PUNISHING LEGAL CITIZENS with THEIR bills.

Huckabee is right about TWO things: Abortion and our Tax code.

Beyond that, this broken clock makes Ron Paul’s Foreign Policy look credible.

Why is it we have so many Republicans who have 1 or 2 Great Ideas and a half dozen STUPID ides?

The whole premise of this article is dishonest.
The 14th Amendment does NOT “guarantee(s) citizenship for children born in the United States, regardless of their parents’ immigration status.”
It was not written to grant citizenship to children of parents who were not citizens.
The 14th does not need to be repealed, it needs to be enforced as it was initially intended.

While the former Arkansas governor said, “I’m not for an amnesty program,” he added, “You do not punish a child for something the parent did.”

It’s NOT “punishment”.

It’s having adults and KIDS respecting our laws. If the parent(s) don’t then we need to make sure ILLEGAL KIDS DO.

Huckster, it’s NOT FAIR to PUNISH LEGAL CITIZENS by giving perks to ILLEGALS - kids or adults - that LEGAL CITIZENS PAY FOR and EARN. It’s being abused - birth right citizenship. We are being EXPLOITED. Enough is enough.

“I think it’s better if he goes to college and becomes a citizen.”

Sounds good to me!

Get in line for a student visa or citizenship and come here for college. Abide by our laws and get rid of birth right citizenship!

Require the parent(s), if you can FIND a father ... to take the kids with them too and return to their country. I don't believe in splitting up families either. I'm done with the EMOTIONAL stuff. I want ILLEGALS out! Let the WHOLE FAMILY get in line.

Whatever Huckster. How bout we just not award them with citizenship. Especially when their parent/s have knowingly illegally crossed our border?

I think we all know for whom, and why the 14th amendment was necessary at the time. So now, some 150 years later we find ourselves in dire need of remedy. This is precisely why we our Constitution provides for amendments. It can and should be done. But it will take pols not on the prowl for illegal immigrant votes, to get the process jump started.

Is Huckabee actually saying that he thinks it is punishment for a child to be born anywhere other than in the United States?

Otherwise, what is the punishment for a child to return with his mother who dashed over the border within days prior to giving birth?

I don't believe he has thought it through. He seems to be saying it is a punishment for any child to be born outside of the United States, and that it is our obligation to do something about it in each and every case, regardless of the cost.

I have never been a fan.

I seem to recall a substantial number of people defending this guy as far back as the 2008 election, and while I appreciate that he’s pro-life, I’ve never been able to understand the appeal. I don’t have to like or vote for someone to understand why someone else would, and I just can’t see what anyone likes about this guy. It appears he has no fans here, at least none admitting to wanting him to run for president again, so I guess I’m not going to get any answers from them.

I just find him unappealing, uninteresting, and just another ‘centrist’ who the current RNC probably likes, since he sure seems to want to ‘get along.’

It isn’t punishment. The parents aren’t citizens, and if the law was remotely serving the best interest of US citizens, the parents could never become citizens after entering the US illegally. The children would simple be citizens of the country or countries of their parents. No punishment to it. I bet most of the countries illegals are coming from have similar laws governing who can and who can’t be citizens. It’s called borders and sovereignty. If you think your nation is something more than worthless, you have a few standards regarding who can belong to it.

I confess I sorta like the guy. But not as a politician. Rather, as an entertainer. He seems cordial and sincere enough as a human being. But when it comes to his politics, like you, I cringe at the prospect. He is definitely not the sorta fellow we need at the helm.

If the GOP thinks they can deliver Romney or Huck, they best think twice. I figure they have one last chance to get this right.

Mr. Huckabee, I like you personally, I understand your heart for children, but FACE UP! The whole world just cannot come to the USA.

Stop translating this as “punishing children”, Mr. Huckabee, unless you admit openly that illegal immigration—uncontrolled immigration is going to PUNISH OUR CHILDREN with the huge debt to take care of all of these people.

Stand outside of the embassies and consulates of the USA in foreign countries, as we have done on very many occasions, in four Asian countries, and behold the lines BLOCKS LONG at times of people all trying to enter the USA.

SIR!! LOOK!! THE WHOLE WORLD CANNOT COME TO AMERICA, the words on the Statue of Liberty notwithstanding, without absolutely wrecking our country and our way of life.

This path of unrestricted immigration we are headed down will turn America into a pauper nation that will be unable to continue its exercise of benevolence because it will be stripped of its wealth.

The current generation of immigrants has very little similarity to that of the turn of the twentieth century when there were no welfare programs, no social security, no handouts, and immigrants knew when they came that they had to put out, contribute, take care of their own ENTIRELY! This made Americans out of those dear people.

The current generation is coming from nations affected by communism and have been raised to believe government should take care of them when they fail. Further, that is the model being promoted by modern American administrations.

The current generation of immigrants are seeing the advertisements for government aid posted right on the walls of our own embassies and consulates abroad, sponsored by our own socialist-ridden State Department! They are trained to think that being on the dole is normal and natural.

MR. HUCKABEE! THE WHOLE WORLD JUST CANNOT COME TO AMERICA!

Huckabee, the man who left preaching for the "higher calling" of politics, infamous for commuting the sentence of the WA state murderer of police officers, and whom many touted as the ideal candidate to run against Blanche Lincoln, is now preaching that "illegal alien children should not be punished for 'something' their parents did."

Huckabee is one of those dangerous types because he's uninformed. First, the 14 Amendment does not have to be repealed, LINK as pointed out and explained by our late Congressman BillyBob.

Secondly, Huckabee is trying to play both sides because he still has presidential ambitions. Huckabee could teach a cat how to sit on a fence.

Please, let’s not start that pointless argument again. It doesn’t and it never did. Read the writings of its author. The fact that the court got it wrong over a hundred years ago doesn’t change why the amendment was written or how it has been twisted into something entirely different.

Dang you Huck!!! We want an unelectable nominee like Palin.

She's as unelectable as you allow the media to convince you she is. By the way, they hate her with a passion. They also didn't care much for Ronald Reagan who landslided his way into office a couple of times with the conservative message.

2012 will be between two women: Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. Obama's job was to ram Nationalized Health Care through, but at a cost- a single term, which you can bet was negotiated with Bill and Hill. Her resume awaits.

The collateral damage this ill-prepared and inexperienced fraud imposes on this country will guarantee a single term. (The Clintons don't care what happens to us, but what happens to them 'cause it's all about power, wealth, and priviledge).

If, and that's a big, damn IF, we can get through the next two years without some major social or global cataclysmic event this is how it's going to play out. A Wellesleyian Marxist, Alynskiite vs. a pro life, pro second ammendment mother of five and former governor of Alaska. Huckabee, Gingrich, and Romney should throw whatever support they have behind Sarah yesterday. That's how dire the situation is in America today.

Of course, with two women at the top of the ticket, women will be turning out in record numbers, but they would have anyway. Because families and children are at risk in today's big-government-cures-all enviornment where jobs are scarce and feeding a family becomes increasingly more difficult and you'd have to win the lottery to afford health care.(not that government meddling has anything to do with that)

Students in Stanislaus CA dove in dumpsters trying to prevent Sarah from speaking to a fundraising arm of the college. They raised $200K for students from her appearance. The Professional Left owns the media (except Fox and a few others) and will spare nothing to destroy whoever runs against their choice in '012.

They are working overtime to destroy Sarah. Unrelenting attacks on a mother who also happened to run the biggest state in the Union. You have only to ask yourself, "Why?" And, "why not the others?" When you answer that, meet me at the polls, my friend. We've got work to do.
