S.Korea detects 'massive' N.Korea troop deployment (AFP) – 08/24/10

SEOUL — South Korea has detected a "massive" deployment of North Korean troops and arms near the capital Pyongyang, Seoul's defence ministry said Tuesday.

The large number of soldiers, armoured vehicles and artillery have been stationed near the communist state's capital since July 12, the ministry said in a report to parliament.

The deployment appears to be related to political events such as a meeting of key communist party delegates next month and the party's 65th anniversary on October 10, a ministry spokesman told AFP.

I’m suprised they even had the fuel available to get them to Pyongyang.

In all seriousness, nothing good is going to come of this. On the one hand, if Kim’s son is to assume the throne it will probably require some additional armed provocations (ie Cheonan) to legitimize himself to the NORK military heirarchy. On the other hand, the transition to power is anything but smoothe upon Kim’s death; power struggles ensue, serious refugee issues for S. Korea and China, etc.

That and with our excellent trustworthy foreign policy experience in the administrative branch, I’m not a bit concerned.

At the very least, he is (possibly) going to be seen as giving credence to the new Dear Leader.

This is very interesting.....thank you for posting...I have an interest in N. Korea for it’s people who have so long been terribly mislead. So these events unfolding are certainly going to change something up there...and I see China has it’s leaders visiting there more frequently now as well. So things are cooking as to the future of this ‘Hermit Kingdom”.

Yep....neither China nor any in Asia want to see the collapse but I am not so sure it can be prevented with all considered. Is China massing anything more on their borders now? If they start to move, which might be their call in what N.Korea is doing now, then they will be the first to attempt a power Grab...with S. Korea right behind if not along side to do the same.

we should pull out of South Korea.

They don’t like us, they don’t want us there. And our saber rattling will just embolden the North Koreans.

I’m serious. South Korea has never been that great of an ally - we should just let the hungry dogs eat them.

Yea, the last thing China wants is a unified Korea under the command of Seoul because that could potentially mean US soldiers on or near their border, so we can’t discount a power grab by China in the event of a NORK govt collapse.

I talked with a friend who is very up on what is happening there and he told me that what the South fears will happen now is Kim will order all the political prisoners and known dissenters killed in a mass killing spree before his son takes over.

Smooth the way by eliminating what could be a million+ mouths that need feeding and resources to guard and care for them, also dieing with the blame so his son will be clear of any later charges or crimes against humanity.

“you really think anyone in their right mind “wants” N.Korea?”

Nope, everybody wants the status quo. But unless Kim can convince his military that his son is ready to lead, then that house of cards may come down. Nature abhors a vacuum . . .

They backed us in Vietnam, have provided us with a strategic outpost to monitor both the Russians and the Chinese, and are healthy trading partners.

But your right we should just abandon all our allies to the hungry dogs that is an excellent strategy.

We need to go into NK and take over command of the military and use it to invade Iran. The DPRK military is such a closed society they will take orders from who ever they think is running the show.
