The driver of an SUV that jumped a sidewalk and plowed into five people waiting for a bus Tuesday in San Francisco's Visitacion Valley did not have a license, police said.

Two of the victims in the 9:36 a.m. crash at San Bruno and Arleta avenues were in critical condition late Tuesday, and the other three were in serious condition.

The victims, four women and a man, ranged in age from their 30s to 80s, said Rachael Kagan, a spokesman for San Francisco General Hospital.

The driver of a Ford Explorer, a 24-year-old woman whose name has not been released, was heading south down a hill on San Bruno when she lost control because of what she described as mechanical failure, said Sgt. Michael Andraychak, a police spokesman.

He said the vehicle has been impounded and inspected by an outside expert.

The woman told officers she had tried to apply the SUV's brakes, without success. She was cited for driving a vehicle without a license and was released,

More evidence that the tightly controlled licensing requirements for driving doesn't really work.

Lets try throwing out the licensing hassle and see if things are any worse, or better.

Same with firearms. Of course the flip side of this idea is to make penalties for ACTUAL damages horrific. But no more penalties for POTENCIAL damages.

I'm pretty sure that the whole money making paradigm of licensing is an unnecessary waste of time and dollars. I know it will never fly because: 1. Government gives up control, and the whole "hundreds of thousands of police officers with nothing to do" thing is history. 2. People would be made responsible for their very own actions and nobody wants that! Oh well.

Well, I do have to say that driving without a license is simply a bureaucratic problem, ie, little to do with proficiency at driving (it is simply another means of deriving income for the government).. If guilty of negligence, the courts should handle that.

Now, she may have been at fault, but that is a matter for law enforcement. If she was indeed negligent, she should be punished. If not, she was only guilty of not paying the government to allow her to drive on their roads.

Now if she was an illegal and also driving without a license, the faults double. So... since we can’t determine the facts reading this article, I guess we will have to wait and see what the circumstances really are... or just assume them since we may never know if we wait for the media for information...

Must be illegal, a citizen would have been held. BTW: No license=No Insurance.

Let’s see what the MSM reports when she pulls a “runner” and heads South across the border...

They had to at least set a court date before they released her, right?

From the comments section following the article:

“My money is on an undocumented immigrant on her cell phone. She couldn’t flee because there were too many witnesses. It’s not because she’s a good person.”

Dead on.

I have never understood why someone driving without a license, without an inspection if required and/or without insurance is given a ticket and allowed to drive away. At a minimum their car should be impounded. Stupid - IMO. But maybe I feel that way because I have been rearended twice by people who didn’t have insurance or a valid license. They never appeared in court and my insurance premium went up.

It took years for the left to succeed in torts against the tobacco companies. Sometimes I dream that the right will file claims against bureaucrats for dereliction of duty to protect citizens and that sovereign immunity will eventually be found not to protect these bastards who obstruct immigration enforcement.

I think someone driving without a license and causing any type of damage/personal injury should be arrested and bond should be set at a minimum amount that would compensate victims for estimated injury and property cost!

According to news reports the driver was unidentified, uninsured and unlicensed.

She was cited and released - a law enforcement/media coincidence no news report on this accident thus far reveals the driver's identity?
