Sen. John McCain acknowledged his primary rivals during his victory speech after winning Tuesday's Arizona Republican primary, but not warmly.
It took until the sixth paragraph of his acceptance speech, and his remarks notably mentioned his closest rival, J.D. Hayworth, last.
"This was a tough, hard-fought primary, and my opponents, Jim Deakin and Congressman Hayworth, and their families and supporters, deserve credit for having the courage to enter the arena, and give so much of themselves to the candidate they believed in," McCain said. "I wish them well in the future."
Deakin was taking a wild stab at public office, whereas Hayworth was a six-term congressman before losing to Rep. Harry Mitchell (D-Ariz.) in 2006.
Hayworth finished Tuesday with more than 30 percent of the vote — a bloc unlikely to warm to McCain. Hayworth was just as cold toward the senator in his concession speech.
"Elections are clarifying moments," he said after conceding to McCain.
Hayworth said voters determined McCain was a "better custodian of their goals and desires."
Jeers broke out among the crowd. "Let's understand we have to move forward," he said. "[O]ur campaign comes to an end." He added, "The cause endures. It is a fight worth having."
Hayworth has said he'll support the Arizona Republican ticket but not McCain personally.

these people are insane. But don’t worry, most of them don’t live here in AZ. I’m in the trenches everyday. So many people working so hard to make sure we take the house and the Senate. McCain will stay to the right this time..he has nowhere else to go.
To be honest I would like to see Hayworth go independent and split the Republican vote and have McCain out of office. What good is he really going to be for us now? He’s lame duck as soon as he’s there, he won’t listen to anyone. If a democrat wins it will be their first term, they either cave to what the public wants or they’re only there one term.
Can he run as an independent?
I don’t blame JD. McCain didn’t have to stoop as low as he did. He NEVER stopped the mud slinging. He reminded me a bit of Ahab, stabbing that whale over and over and over again.
The goal, is to stop LIBERALS from holding a majority.
If liberals can hold both parties - as with McCain, Graham, Snow etc... Then they have permenant power.
It doesn’t matter one damn bit what party the liberal is in.
Obama is dragging the country into a pit because he is a socialist, not because he is a democrat.
Why would anyone support a traitorous SOB such as McCain. A man who supports the left more than anything else. Good God the GOP is pathetic.
McCain is known to have a mean streak and hold grudges. My prayer is that that meanness extends to Obama. Obama has treated John like crap to his face on national TV. I did not vote for McCain but I hope he never forgets nor forgives Obama and puts his energies toward making HIM look like a fool and a loser. That really shouldn’t be hard to do.
There will be some votes upcoming that literally determine the future of this country as we've known it and loved it. I hope McCain won't continue to associate himself with Obie's failed policies, since the landscape has changed since '08-'09. I admit, McCain unleashed, facing no re-election is scary but we're watching him closely. This is damn serious and I'm not putting my vote in the hands of a democrat, whom I consider lower than pond scum. Real POS.

It is just that we value freedom over prosperity and are willing to take the long view.
I don’t need peace more than I need freedom. My posessions are less important than freedom.
My political decisions are not based on what is less painfull right now.
Obama winning over McCain, painfull as it may be short term, has moved the public to the right. Eliminating the bipartisan pretentions that Obama has been to project accelerates this effect.
I don’t know Arizona law specifically but I know in a lot of cases people who don’t win their primary, that still want to run, run as an independent.
And....the poster added the headline that “JD wouldn’t support McCain”, which you have shown to be untrue.
The people have spoken. They said that they wanted Mc Cain. For my part, they can have him. And they can have the amnsty for illegals that is coming now. He is part of the reason we have obama now.
Stupid me, I empathized with the people of Arizona in their plight, or, as evidenced by the renomination of Mc Cain for Senator feigned plight,with illegal immigration. Was I ever fooled.
A brand new Rat couldn’t possibly have the influence McNuts has and in the political climate of today couldn’t grow very strong. In a western state like AZ the Rat might even be fairly conservative and actually stick to their positions. In six years maybe the AZ Pubbies can put up a decent conservative to take the seat back.
Any rating scheme which posits conservatism in an author of McCain/Feingold, and the Amnesty bills, and the bailouts is outright communist.

What has mcCain done to make you think that? If it is his last shot he will come with both guns. Don't be so stupid. He is still pissed at us because he didn't get his amnesty bill passed.
Right. I wanted to find out if it’s possible - deadline to file, etc, to run as an Independent. For Alaska, it was June 1st.
IMO, that’s the way to go.
