On Tuesday, lacking even the excuse that a Rolling Stone reporter tricked him, another top U.S. military commander thumbed his nose at President Barack Obama's policies in Afghanistan.
Marine Corps Commandant James T. Conway, 62, Tuesday told a roomful of reporters at the Pentagon that Mr. Obama's July 2011 deadline for beginning troop withdrawals from Afghanistan is "probably giving our enemy sustenance.... We've intercepted communications that say, Hey, you know, we only have to hold out for so long.'"
Gen. Conway went on to say that Mr. Obama was no doubt "talking to several audiences" when he announced the July 2011 deadline, suggesting that the president may have being coy when he outlined his Afghanistan policy in a speech at West Point last December.

The truth hurts doesn’t it bi-otch.
Lamh Foistenach Abu!
Perhaps the editorial needs to be taken to Afghanistan...and left on a high mountain outcropping.

I fail to see how a military commander being honest to media, is refusing orders, or threatening civilian control.
Since it continues to be amateur hour at the White House, maybe such commanders will help them get a grip, knowing this isn’t academic—and mens’ lives are at stake, not to mention our national interests now and in the far future.
Article 88 UCMJ is the controlling factor here. If Gen Conway has an issue, and he should, he must resign and voice his opinions then. When any general officer, particularly one who serves as a Chief questions POTUS publicly and is allowed to remain it weakens the office andcalls into question POTUS’s role as CiC.I’m not defending Obama but this is getting very very strange.
Back in 2004 I said that as long as there was one Iraqi left who could give the US the finger as they left back to the States that this one Iraqi would be hailed as the Lion of Fallujah (or where ever) who drove the US out of Iraq.
And I still believe it today.
He’s still following orders from the Community-Organizer-in-Chief, as one would expect from a Marine. He’s just trying to get a vital message to the socialist in our White House. Since the moron he works for doesn’t listen to people in uniform, he’s using the media to relay the message. Obama has handlers who listen to the media for him. There is no threat to civilian control here, just a Marine Corps general displaying appropriate loyalty to his men.
True enough, but that’s not exactly the tone of this revolting article.
Very true. And these men know it better than we do. Obama must be putting a lot of men in harms way. The generals are throwing down the gauntlet. This could get ugly. Fast.
I like yours better...
I believe that if the Generals and Admirals don't get relief at the ballot box by Nov 2012, there will be a coup.
Punk journalism.
I think Gen Conway is retiring at the end of the year.
Wobbly. Please. Nine years and $327 billion into the war and the Marine commandant is quoting a lance corporal about going wobbly. Twenty- or 21-year-old lance corporals can think like that, but 62-year-old generals are supposed to have a better grasp of political reality.
Maybe the country is going "wobbly" because it has come to realize that this is a tribal war for nationhood fought by guerrillas who don't think like U.S. troops.
Maybe the country is going "wobbly" because it keeps hearing about our loyal ally, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, releasing his cronies from jail, where they had been tossed for corruption.
Maybe we can do the math and see the attrition rate from the Afghan security forces that we're spending billions to train is something on the order of 50 percent. Marines don't see lost causes. Other Americans do.
America owes Gen. Conway its thanks for his 40 years of service. It's too bad he chose to end it like this.
Screw the St. Louis Today website. There isn't anyone any of the scum on the "editorial" staff of that joke organization worthy to lick camel dung off the Commandants' boots.
Gen. Conway, Semper Fi, Sir.
you are exactly right. Sadaam was given a hero’s welcome in IRAQ after he got his ass kicked in the 1st Gulf War....for standing up to the “Great Satan”.
Yes, the General is doing this nation, and this pice of sh!t President a great service by telling the truth...on his way out the door.
He's retiring in a month or two, already announced.
The U.S. govt, legislative (including those “tea party conservatives” helping McCain), judiciary is totally corrupt and 100% behind Islam.
The Pentagon, military, DIA, CIA, NSA and other agencies are infested with Muslim Brotherhood moles and sympathesizers. Ditto ALL of TV and Hollywood.
The Marines may be the only institution left in America that has not been corrupt and Islamified.
It is strange. On the other hand, I would support a military coup right now. So the more criticism of hussein from the troops the better.
I knew E7s with 16 and 18 years who got out back in the ‘90s when Slick Willy was president because they couldn’t take it any more. It has to be much worse now.
“lick camel dung off the Commandants’ boots.”
I think you meant to say the lance corporals boots.
We had over 3 marines from a local base here in California recently. They were just the greatest young men. My 16 year old was so impressed, he asked them for (and recieved) a Marine hair cut. Made a great impression on him. And on us.
Young guys, just starting out. I pray for them.
Jim Conway is calling a spade a spade. He’s the straightest shooter within the Beltway. He will do anything to protect his Marines, even if the means calling a spade a spade.
Waiting in the wings is Jim Mattis, who (rightfully) believes that our enemies deserve killing.
I have personnaly known both of them and this country should be thankful that Marines such as these serve this Nation well.
Semper Fi,
Uhm, then can damn well get his Birth Certificate and let’s compare it to the one Barry the Petulant found among his mother’s belongings in 1995 upon her passing.
Dissent is only disloyal when the left doesn’t like it. F’em, get a competent leader and you will have followers.
I miss the Globe-Democrat. (sigh)
Civilian control does not trump the truth. Commanders at all levels have a duty to speak the truth. ZeroBama is a Moo-slim Marxist Kenyan. I’m enlisted (retired) but I have a duty to speak the truth, also. My Oath does not have an expiration date.
St. Louis and its politicians and journalists don’t fight for anything - they just surrender.
Hey St. Louis, how’s your crime rate these days?
Yes. My sympathies are with are fighting men and women, but... I hate to say it but there has to be order and public respect for the CIC. I don’t know if this crosses the line, but I am not comfortable with these types of articles. I abhor Obama, but there has to be respect and a unified front for the sake of the USA.
I don’t think the concept of civilian control has anything to do with this. It doesn’t mean service men have to pretend the president is smart, good looking, or knows anything about winning a war. All it should mean is that they obey orders or resign.
“. . . this one Iraqi would be hailed as the Lion of Fallujah (or where ever) who drove the US out of Iraq.”
Certainly by the LA and NY Times.
I like the way Conway bitch-slapped soetoro, who can evidently do nothing but take it.
Then perhaps General Conway intends to send a more powerful message than we have heretofore supposed. If the purported Commander in Chief was in fact an imposter working for foreign interests, would 88 UCMJ still apply?:
Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.
If a man, one who has known and honored the highest principles of duty and fidelity to country embodied by the military code of justice, suddenly acts as if this one person should not be respected under that code, is he trying to tell us indirectly that he knows something he cant tell us directly?
What part of “KISS MY ASS” don’t you get, MEDIA?!
You've been watching too many Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood episodes. FUBO
The article mentions the General is retiring next month. I suspect the General staff sees SOOO much incompetance from 1600 PA Ave that they see very serious risks to national security--so they really want to get the word out, and pressure the White House to at least attempt to fly right, even if that means damaging their own personal careers and reputations.
Thank you for posting this birthday salute to the Marines.
Thank you very much.
Jim Conway is calling a spade a spade.
YUP!
Semper Fi! Marine!
I do agree that the best advice for anyone who serves is to serve by the letter of their code. Serve with honor.
I do understand that many in the military are in dire need of support on how to deal with the left-wing attack that is going on. I want brave people to do what is right when neccesary but at the same time I would advice to seriously consider any actions that breach your code of conduct and put your self in danger that way.
This is one of the toughest issues for me because I want our troops to stand up for themselves. I do not want them to just accept having our Constitution trampled on but I also want them to be safe and secure in where any action leads them.
God Bless the United States Armed Forces. I could never repay my debt. I always vow my respect and gratitude.
Comandant Gen Conway and SGT MAJ Kent are real Americans. I notice the the pride they have in todays marines.
