Ninth foot washes up on Pacific coast
Globe and Mail ^ | 8/27/2010 | Ian Baily

The ninth human foot to wash up in the Pacific Northwest since 2007 was found Friday morning on an island about 50 kilometres south of Seattle, say police

A tourist strolling along a beach found the foot Friday on the east side of Whidbey Island, one of nine islands located in Island County about 48 kilometres north of Seattle, according to Island County Detective Ed Wallace.

“Just a foot – no shoe; no sock,” Det. Wallace told The Globe and Mail

Det. Wallace said the latest foot is, based on its size, either from a juvenile or a female, and has likely been in the water for less than two months. He said it does not appear to have been severed.

(snip)

Police have no idea yet what to make of the discovery. “We’re just in the infancy of this,” he said.

Bodies come apart and break into little pieces when pounded by surf along the bottom and shore - especially so on rocky shores. It’s one of those things that people don’t talk about, but it’s not uncommon.

The last time an article about this was posted (many moons or so ago), seems like all the feet found were either all left or all right feet, can’t remember which. I don’t think the surf would be so discriminating. And Always just a foot, never a skull, and arm or a hip, just a foot.

Why does “five dollar, foot long” keep ringing in my head when I go to the beach?....

Feet are often protected by shoes and hold together much better. Nothing about other body parts would cause them to float, aside from intact bodies.

As for rights or lefts being more prevalent, the sample size is very small. Get up to 10 or more and there is a statistically relevant trend.

He said it does not appear to have been severed.
If it has not been severed then it is still attached. Who writes this stuff?

My dictionary says separated. So if it is no longer attached it is separated and thereby technically severed.

Writing headlines and news copy has become sketchy at best.

I’m surprised that when the count reached 9 feet they didn’t refer to it as 3 yards.
