Lone Star state's electricity up for grabs?

HOUSTON -- They call us the Lone Star State for a reason. Historically, Texas has been known to go it alone, forging its own path in a quest for self sufficiency. The same holds true when it comes to electricity.

"It's a $20 billion dollar plus market right in the state of Texas alone. It's huge." said State Rep. Sylvester Turner of Houston.

In the United States there are just three energy grids. There's the eastern interconnection and the western interconnection. Then there's Texas interconnection operated by ERCOT, The Electric Reliability Council of Texas.

A recent report by the Texas Tribune focuses on a new project that would interlink all three grids. Called Tres Amigas, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has given preliminary thumbs up to the project.

Part of the “green energy” push (especially with the wind turbines) is to do away with the independence of the Texas grid.

The Texas grid is connected to the outside, however by transfer devices - either motor/generators, or AC/DC/AC converters. But it is still physically isolated, thus protected from any disruption of the outside grid.

Don’t do it Texas. CA is just looking to suck your power because their insane laws won’t let them produce their own.

If Texas can generate more electricity than it needs, why not export some of it to other states? As long as it doesn't compromise our energy independence. If we can charge more for the exported electricity we can lower our own rates.

That "Tres Amigas" moniker has me worried though...

I totally oppose this unless it can be undone later. An independent electrical grid is another reason why I feel secession can be accomplished without major problems. If the Feds can control the grid, they have one more weapon they can use to hold us hostage.

We had stable prices until Perry sold us out. Just like he did with college tuition.

Remember, not all of the state is in ERCOT.

***Texas has its one Grid, then we should keep it in State.***

Parts of the panhandle and small parts of East Texas are under the Southwest Power Pool and are not a part of
ERCOT.

I happen to know a lot about this from the inside.

The political pressure and motivation is disgusting.

Texas should strive for independence on all fronts, especially power. Unfortunately, the state legislature, which controls the Texas grid, is rife with collectivist F's.

You’d think they’d know better than to call the plan to integrate AMERICA’s three power grids “Tres Amigas”.

You really think that’s goingto get everyone on board, put them in the right frame of mind? Who the hell did the marketing survey for this?

Lastly, isn’t “Amigas” the FEMININE form - “Amigos” being perhaps a better choice for projecting a strong power system?

Yep, they use the same technology that Hydro-Québec implemented after the ice storm. That technology prevented the 2003 blackout from hitting Québec. The other advantage of DC technology is that it eliminates the problems of phasing and synchronization over long distances.

100% correct.

As an aside, I trust in the name of consistency’s sake, Orangehoof, you do not fly the ensign.
