ABC News has thrown in the towel on the liberal media's efforts to downplay the huge numbers of Americans who came to the Restoring Honor rally held today at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. by radio and TV host Glenn Beck.
The subheadline of an online report at ABCNews.com reads: Restoring Honor Rally at Sight of MLK's 'I Have a Dream' Speech Draws Hundreds of Thousands of People
Sarah Palin, speaking to Politico during an impromptu interview at Reagan National Airport after her speech at the rally chided the Associated Press for lowballing the monster crowd:
Holding her BlackBerry up with one hand, she lamented that the Associated Press had only pegged attendance as "tens of thousands."
Asked if there were more than 100,000 people there, Palin said: "Oh yeah."

Glenn will have an accurate (ballpark) figure from National Park Service Monday morning. That’s about as close as they can really get.
IIRC, from the Tea Party rally last year, the NPS doesn’t normally provide figures. They might give some (as you state) ballpark figure based on non-statistical observation, but that’s all. I doubt there’s any way one can closely estimate the number attending.
But the photos speak for themselves.
You can correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the National Park Service got out of the mall attendance game after the 6-mill man march.
As Glenn said on his Friday morning radio show, they count the number of buses and extrapolate from there. It ain’t what a CPA would do, but it’s close enough for our purposes.

Awesome rally! The LSM can’t spin everything anymore.
One sore spot is still the top-of-the-hour ABC news radio update. They mentioned the huge crowd, and played a clip of Dr. King’s niece speaking out against racism, then they mentioned Sarah praising our military heroes.
But right after that they said “Conservative commentator Glenn Beck also spoke to a crowd of right-wingers at the same location”, trying to imply that it was a separate event.
The dinosaur media are desperate. Keep up the good fight!
That’s about all they can do. Not all arrive by bus, and not all buses will be filled, but it’ll give some round figure. Better than what we’ll get from the media. Even the ABC figure of 100,000 is way low.
The ACORN- Standing Ovation for Calderon groups are not going to like this.
They will have to make them out to be racists.
The NPS estimated 400,000 for the MMM, and got sued to either change or retract their estimate.
So, they quit doing it, except for Obama's inauguration.
What about Metro riders? Can those numbers be obtained?
They only had a permit for 300,000. Perhaps they could offer to “pay a fine” if the Parks Service would only let them know how much they exceeded their permit?! :)

Metro releases daily ridership numbers. But today’s will not be accurate as they opened the faregates at some stations to relieve crowding.

I don't know. I was one of them, though, and it was packed. The line to buy tickets at the Vienna metro station at 9:30 was over a mile long. Eventually, they just let everyone ride for free because they couldn't keep up. The metro was over capacity for hours after that. I did the same routine at the 09/12 rally last year and as crowded as the metro was then, it was far worse today. FWIW.

“Glenn Beck’s and the Rev Al Sharpton’s rallies combined for about a million people in Washington today”.
The MSM will fail to mention Sharpton’s rally drew about 5K max and Beck had the remaining 999,500.
Sort of like the NBA player who once proudly announced he and Michael J combined for 81 points in a game. He got 4 and Michael got the other 77 or so. LOL
Maybe AP would like to multiply that tens of thousands by some 100s.

Is she afraid of overestimating? Or is she just ignorant? Either way, she can't very well be called a "reporter" then. I know what my own eyes saw when I watched it online and on C-SPAN. (Plus, there were an additional 130,000+ people watching online at ustream toward the end of the rally.)
The other day on Glenn Becks TV show he held up a picture of the Mall. He said they have calculated that the Mall can hold 200,000 thousand people and that grassy area on the left next to it can hold another 100,000. We can also see there are people in areas to the far right.
They also said that participants had Anti-Obama t-shirts and signs. (even though Beck said no signs)

The conversation in every MSM news outlet today has been over what the lowest number estimate they can give without looking like complete jacka$$es.
Today was hubby’s birthday. Wish we could have gone to DC. But, we watched it on television this morning while he opened his presents. He said this was the best birthday he’s ever had. We are so proud of Glenn, Sarah Palin, and the hundreds of thousands of patriots. They represented a lot of patriots who couldn’t be there.
The National Park Service stopped taking crowd counts in 1995 after disputes over the count following the "Million Man March".
I caught tail ends of NBC’s and CBS’ reports on their respective nightly news. Missed any references to crowd estimates, but NBC said Republicans won’t want to be identified with today’s event, and CBS’ Jeff Greenberg (is that his name?) said the event will have a huge impact on the November elections.
“Huge impact” is an understatement. But perhaps the MSM is finally getting the picture — they can’t downplay what is now a major and still growing movement in this country.

Yes, they did stop giving numbers after the million man march. Some people were in such a fit that apparently fewer than 1,000,000 men were there, that they wanted recounts and upgraded means of counting, etc. So they decided not to give crowd numbers at all for future events.
I didn't see a single Anti-Obama t-shirt or sign. Actually I saw very few printed t-shirts and zero signs. Lots of flags, however. There may have been a few fringe types giving out literature on the edges of the crowd.
There were a few hecklers with whistles who started up when Sarah Palin started to speak. We saw several police officers running through the aisle between barricades. The noise stopped soon. I wonder if lots of patriots took pictures of the creeps and that stopped them.

The only way a race whore like al sharpton or any dim politician can draw a crowd like that is to give away cars and rolexes and by the end of it you would probably have to call it a riot.

I realize we use the ten base numerical system. You wouldn't describe 100K people as being "ten ten thousand" or 500K people as being "fifty ten thousand", would you? There is an implication by using the term "tens of thousands" that the number is less than 100K.
