Floridians are holding dozens of house parties across the state Saturday with hopes of publicizing their support for two amendments that could be overshadowed on the November ballot by high-profile statewide races for U.S. Senate and other offices.
Sponsored by FairDistrictsFlorida.org, activists planned 56 parties at homes or in some cases restaurants or coffee shops to educate others about Amendments 5 and 6.
Each would make it harder for lawmakers to draw districts that favor any particular party or incumbent. The amendments are intended to protect minority voters and are backed by the NAACP.
Spreading the word through house parties is a ``more personal and laid back way to interact with others in your neighborhood and also learn about the importance of these two amendments,'' said Kelly Penton, Fair Districts spokeswoman.
A search of the Fair Districts website showed about eight parties in Broward or Miami-Dade counties including in Coral Gables, Doral, Miami and Oakland Park.
In July, a judge threw out Amendment 7 in a ruling that found it too confusing. Backers have appealed to the Florida Supreme Court. That amendment was written by a Republican-led Legislature in response to Amendments 5 and 6, both written by Fair Districts, a liberal-leaning group. Challenges to Amendments 5 and 6 are also pending at the Florida Supreme Court.
The organization is chaired by former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz. Former Gov. Bob Graham and former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, both Democrats, are honorary co-chairs.
Organizers collected more than 1.6 million signatures to get the amendments on the ballot.

It would be nice if the reporter had seen fit to advise us of exactly how this mystery mechanism would work.
But that's probably asking too much...
Yes, protection of ‘minority’ voting is certainly needed. Minority can also be construed as ‘diversity’ in most circles. So, yes, in order to protect the ‘diversity’ of this nation’s makeup, Reno and her ilk should also be screaming from the rooftops to protect the Electoral College, which protects the ‘diversity’ of the vote through maintaining the strength of diverse STATE interests. This, instead of clammoring for a Popular Vote wherein less than two dozen counties and municipalities contain half the lesser population of this country.
The NAACP are professional racists. Why on earth would anyone believe their recommendation is worth having?
It will be interesting to see the Census numbers and analyze how everything “works” together.
“Each would make it harder for lawmakers to draw districts that favor any particular party or incumbent. The amendments are intended to protect minority voters and are backed by the NAACP. “
Time out. Dems draw districts precisely for minority voters that once incumbent are never voted out. The two halves of that statement create one lie.
True wonder why they don’t come out and call it what it is (STCV)stop the cracker voter.
The whole Democrat Party has become nothing more than groups with hatred and jealosy of White people that work and pay taxes.
Something bugs me about this story. I picked up and read the flier at a political event here in Jax for these two proposals and at first glance did not appear as described by the writer. One was for federal districts and the other for state. It would eliminate the snake-like drawn districts like the Congressional third (Corrine Brown) so I will go back and look a bit closer.
One thing to consider here is misinformation propogation. Just like the left to tell everyone that they are for the little people or common folk but in reality all they are for is to keep them in their caste places.
Look at FL districts 2 and 3 for a definition of gerrymandering. District 2, my district, guarantees a solid D voter base.....3 is just as bad.
Excellent question. Drawing a district that favors a particular party (gerrymandering) is how “minority” districts are created. Maybe they wrote fraudulent amendments that encourage gerrymandering so they have to convince people that they do the opposite.
I wonder what does reno looks like these days?
Yep, first they rearrange districts then the make it so those minority controlled areas cannot be changed with the ammendment.
I see no reason Minority votes need special protection, a vote is a vote, what we really need is to make sure the black panthers and other putrid anti american groups are not allowed to fix this next election.
It can’t be pretty.
Probably in the same category as Helen Thomas.
I don’t.
You are dreaming! Do you think this crowd would back an amendment which would negatively affect their own?
Does the legislature create the district lines? If so then I will bet if the Dems ever take control of the FL legislature again that these same advocates will be screaming for the repeal of this amendment.
That is why I said I need to bring it out and go over it again. http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Florida_Legislative_District_Boundaries,_Amendment_5_(2010)
I stand corrected simply by this quote;
“Our goal is really just to establish some fairness standards when the Legislature begins drawing congressional and legislative boundaries. If you look at the state of Florida, there are some crazy districts out there,” said Mark McCullough, a spokesman for Service Employees International Union (SEIU).[5] The proposed ballot measure is supported by Fair Districts Florida.
These go right along with Ammendment 4 to the circular file.
[From The Hill] The campaigns of both Rubio and Meek are having an absolute field day with Crist's flip-flop.
The Rubio campaign blasted out an e-mail with the subject line, "Crist flips for sixth time on Obamacare!" The headline on an e-mail from the Meek campaign reads, "Breaking: Governor Crist diagnosed with political amnesia."
The north end of a very old south bound mule.
LOL These amendments are to PROTECT gerrymandering not stop it. They want to block redrawing the districts in a rational way.
Anything being sponsored by the NAA “L” CP gives me the creeps.
There goes more of my rights.
The left has a history of writing liberal amendments, and getting them on the constitution here in FL. Every election we face a salvo of “feel good” laws that the congress is too smart to pass, but the avg FL votes in and puts on the constitution, like pig cage sizes and bullet trains.
Just from the article, anything that has Graham and Reno as co-chairs and is favorably commented upon by SEIU does NOT get my vote. Remember that these ‘minority’ districts exist as much due to pressure from WashingtonDC as from state apportionment. “Voting Rights” acts have artificially influenced under the threat of Justice Department suit as much as prior generation apportionment had sought to enhance rural white over-representation. The pendulum swings and will continue to do so forever!
[ Each would make it harder for lawmakers to draw districts that favor any particular party or incumbent. ]
Florida gerrymandered precincts are already totally obscene..

They should agree but only if Corrine Brown resigns.
You are spot on. We were praying that Meeks would win. The tan wonderful one probably needed another dose of ultraviolet rays because he probably blanched when he figured that one out. So, he comes right back with another flip flop on the Obama care vote. BTW, don’t forget where is money is now coming from, from those RINO’s who live up in the north east.
You just perfectly summed up the heart of American politics.
I remember Janet Reno, as the child killer of Waco, Texas!
