A recent Department of Justice guide for investigators of criminal and extremist groups lists “constitutionalists” and “survivalists” alongside organizations like Al-Qaeda and the Aryan Brotherhood. The 120-page, “Law Enforcement Sensitive” guide to “Investigating Terrorism and Criminal Extremism – Terms and Concepts” describes itself as “a glossary designed primarily as a tool for criminal justice professionals to enhance their understanding of words relating to extremist terminology, phrases, activities, symbols, organizations, and selected names that they may encounter while conducting criminal investigations or prosecutions of members of extremist organizations.”

Constitutionalist, defined by Random House’s 2010 Dictionary as an “adherent or advocate of constitutionalism or of an existing constitution”, is described in the report as a “generic term for members of the ‘patriot’ movement”

If it means anything, they also include: JIhAd (JIhAAd): Striving for the faith as an extraordinary effort in the belief and practice of Islam; holy war (some think this is a mistaken translation) or militancy even with violence in the defense or in extending the interests of Islam. It apears this was written, at least in part, before Obama came into office.

Do a deep probe of everyone in Congress. They’ve sworn to uphold the Constitution.

Around here, that's true.

Sometimes, the signs help

I think I'm in trouble. There are about 22 terms listed. When I teach American Government or American History, I will make note and have a class discussion on about 14 of them. I teach in an inner city high school. Hmmmmmmmm I guess the Black Helicopters are on whisper mode overhead....

I think you mean to use a word other than "mollify" there.

Hi Cboldt,

Thanks for the note. My wife calls me "Mr. Malaprop", so I'm very apt to screw up this way.

But, I looked it up on the Mirriam-Webster site to make sure, and I don't see how it was wrong:

MOLLIFY transitive verb
1 : to soothe in temper or disposition : appease
2 : to reduce the rigidity of : soften
3 : to reduce in intensity : assuage, temper

Appease would have been a better word, but though clumsy it still seems alright. Maybe I'm missing something?

I appreciate your help.

Tom

Maybe I'm missing something. My impression is that the Obama regime is very much in a muslim appeasement mode.

Anyway, the set of definitions you presented for "mollify" are what I had in mind when I commented. "Appease" is a fine substitute for mollify. I still wonder if you meant what you wrote, or if the "not" is an inadvertent typo.

"the [Obama] regime does not want to mollify the muslims."

Okay! Now I see what I did:

I wrote: "the regime does not want to mollify the muslims."

What I meant to say was: "the change in terminology was not to mollify the muslims or out of concerns about sensitivity but to establish a broader, hidden agenda..."

I may have intended to write: "does not want just to..."

In any case, it was a garbled response. I apologize, and thanks for letting me explain.

Tom
