A capacitor left sitting with the leads open will take on a charge from the surronding air. Short the leads together and you may see a spark. They are usually shipped with the leads shorted together. Imagine a very large cap. such as the 2 sides of a small canyon. If a way to discharge the cap without damageing equipment at the same time, you would have a source of power from the air. An electrical engineer could explain this better than I can.

Isn't that what lightning rods are for?

“Tesla had a tower up. The government (ours) tore it down. It used to be in the encyclopedias.”

-it used to be in Long Island:)

Eliminate lightning and the dominate source of nitrogen to plants & soils is gone.

Yep, that'll work... because air has so much energy in it. All that nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and trace gases mixed in. Exxon will be out of business in six months. /unicorn crap

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Thanks for the ping.
I think a better approach would be lightning rods plus LARGE capacitors to store the charge.

“First, get a kite. Then a wire, a metal key and a bottle to trap the electricity in.
And it’s free!”

No, here’s what you do. Keep the string and the key part.

It’s been a very divisive time on Congress recently and something needs to be done to build bridges. As a gesture of friendship, the Republicans should invite all of the their Democrat counterparts out for a day of friendship and kite flying.
Of course it would need to be last minute and weather dependent; as everyone knows that kites perform the best when lightning bolts are nearby.
