U.S. Wants Report Card for Cars System Would Rate Fuel Economy, Emissions; Industry Says Government Veers Into Issuing Opinions

WASHINGTON—The government proposed labeling each new passenger vehicle with a letter grade from A to D based on its fuel efficiency and emissions, part of a broader effort by the Obama administration to promote electric cars and other advanced-technology vehicles. Journal Community
The proposed new rules, released jointly Monday by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Transportation Department, would be the most substantial change in 30 years to the familiar price-and-mileage labels affixed to the windows of new cars at dealerships.
Currently, the labels must show how many miles per gallon a car gets and its estimated annual fuel cost. Under the proposed changes, a new label design would carry a large letter grade assigned by regulators.
Under the system, the only cars that would receive an A-plus, A or A-minus would be electrics and plug-in hybrids, the government said.

Why look at that, every Government Motor (GM) car gets an A+ - who would have thunk it? :)
That seems to presume that generating electricity has no environmental cost. I guess burning coal doesn't count if no one is looking.
One thing they could do (and might - I didn't read the whole article yet) is come up with an electrical efficiency standard. How many miles per kilowatt-hour will I get? You could get a poor efficiency electric SUV that just gobbles up the electricity to charge its batteries.
How about a number grade (0 through 100) for Big Government, Presidents and their administrations?

What is the grade for a car manufactured with non-union labor? Man, its good to know hope and change is still proudly marching forward. Imagine the mistakes we would make in buying cars if we didn’t have a government grading scale? I imagine the next thing will be a progressive tax on cars scoring less than A+. That would clearly be progressive and transformative.
The EPA and DOT get an “F” for this.
The Hussein regime will also begin grading American citizens in the near future, based upon religion, skin color, party affiliation and union status. Only black, democrat, Muslim SEIU members will qualify for A+ status. Those receiving less than a C will not be permitted to vote, drive or own property. They WILL however be allowed to pay taxes...at the new 90% rate.
Every time I think that the obozo administration cannot possibly do anything more stupid than what they have already done I realize how much I have underestimated their collective stupidity.

Government-granted “Grades” have worked SO well in NYC that a roach is never seen in a restaurant, a bed-bug is never found in an hotel room and every graduate of a New York public school is a veritable Einstein!

Which brings me to my own decision: Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang, or Chevy Camaro? Leaning Challenger because it’s so darned good looking, though Mustang may outperform, and Camaro offers similar power for less $.
I think cars that the government thinks are just swell should have a green smiley face on the sticker. The ones that the government thinks are "bad" (H1 Hummer, etc.) can have a red Mr. Yuck.

I got my “D” car last year, a Lincoln Navigator, because I was afraid I might not be able to get as good a one again. It’s great! I drove it 5,820 miles from Knoxville, TN to the west coast and back this summer.
The guy subbing for Rush talked about this today. For a car to get an A plus it would have to get 117 MPG. How stupid is this? The sooner we get rid of these guys the better.
