Large and dangerous Hurricane Earl is nearing the U.S. East coast. Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings and Watches have been issued from North Carolina to Nova Scotia. Even if the center of Earl remains offshore, hurricane force winds are expected to occur on the Outer Banks by Thursday night. Currently, hurricane force winds extend outward 90 miles, and tropical storm force winds 230 miles from the center of the storm.
Tropical-storm-force winds will likely reach the coast from Virginia northward to New Jersey by late Thursday night or early Friday. A gradual weakening is expected to start later Thursday, but Earl is expected to be a major hurricane when it passes near the Outer Banks.

Checking on boat now. Reconfiguring dock lines so she can rise up in a surge. It is unclear how this will affect the Chesapeake Bay...........

Ouch, the 11AM advisory has the forecast track going right towards Cape Code/Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard. A Cat 2 can wreak some havoc up there:

I just rolled into Gardner, MA, just west of Boston. I ain'ta fraida no danged whirling named Earl!!!
I gotta no leak motorhome that's small enough profile to avoid tipping over in strong winds... So come on Earl, give me a little bloody blow-by buddy!!! (just adds to the adventure)
I'm more concerned with tornadoes when I come back across country in the west-bound direction... Now they REALLY suck!!!

We got back (Rock Hill,SC) last night after being told of the Manatory Evac from Hatteras Island.
Word came down around 8:30 am.. we were packed and Gone by 9:30.
Really sucked leaving .. the Beer just got to that icy/slushy temperature.
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky , no wind and temps in the low 80’s.
My concern was for the flooding, didn’t want the Grand Cherokee full of sandy water, and the fact we had two kids under 9 as well as a 18 mo old.
Ruined a vacation , but I did have hurricane insurance and will be refunded 150% of the rental because we had less than 50% of occupancy.

Please remember to have generators properly vented, to NEVER drive across moving water ( I don’t care how big your truck/Hummer, etc is) and to not walk in flooded streets after the storm.
Stay safe Freepers!

Hey! If that thing is only travelling 18 mph, my motorhome can do at least 80 if I need to take evasive action. Some us conservatives Californians know how to deal with even more swift acting natural disasters than some pokey wind storm.
Looking at that projection, it looked like we were on the cusp of our first huricane brush-off, so to speak(type).

Check out wxrisk.com for info on Earl. Eastern Great Lakes low & Earl may merge, pulling Earl back in. If this happens, it could be bad news for southeast New England coast (Boston, Cape Cod). This guy has a really good track record of getting his forecasts right.

Massachusetts here, about 30 miles inland. We’re not expecting much but rain, unless the storm takes a bad course to the left.

You should be fine, west of Boston, unless they really get the forecast wrong - you should be on the weaker side of the storm, and just get TS-level winds and heavy rain. Nothing that would blow John Kerry’s yacht up your way from Rhode Island.

At this point, with Earl moving due north, I think the coast all the way up to NYC should be OK. But Cape Code/Nantucket/Martha’s Vineyard is another matter.

Latest satellite loops seem to now show an easterly component in the eye’s track.... are you seeing that?
If so... it’s likely to accelerate and continue moving more and more Northeasterly...
I’d say, the Outer Banks will just catch a “graze”... but, yea... Martha’s Vineyard may get a head on hit.
To: dirtboy
FNC reported that Earl is the third strongest hurricane on record at this latitude. Add size to the mix, and there will be a vast swath of power outages if the storm doesn't veer east.
