Steve Jobs Is Stunned (And Scared?) By Android's Growth
Business Insider ^ | 09/02/2010 | Jay Yarrow

Posted on 09/02/2010 11:42:05 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

During yesterday's iPod/Apple TV event Steve Jobs (all but) literally said he cannot believe how fast Android is growing.

He boasted of Apple's success with iOS devices (iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone) saying Apple sees 230,000 new activations of iOS devices on a daily basis.

That's pretty impressive, as it gives Apple a run rate of 84 million iOS devices on an annual basis.

After throwing out Apple's stats, Jobs said, "we think we're ahead of everyone else," because, "we think some our friends are counting upgrades in their numbers."

In other words, Steve Jobs is saying, "I can't believe that Android is growing so fast!"

Google says it has 200,000 Android devices activated daily. Google has since responded saying, “The Android activation numbers do not include upgrades and are, in fact, only a portion of the Android devices in the market since we only include devices that have Google services.”

When you consider that Jobs iOS stat includes iPads and iPods, it's safe to assume Google is activating more phones each day than Apple.

Why should he be surprised? He more than most others, should know how just one new product hitting the market at the right time can dynamically change market share and trends. He shouldn’t expect to stay on top forever.

At the point it shouldn't be that big a shock. Android has all the key factors behind it to spur increased growth and demand.
- Open-Source OS, customizable to any carrier's preference
- More open development environment, meaning more apps developed with fewer restrictions (to be fair, does pose higher risk of security vulnerability)
- Vastly higher number of national and local carriers (iPhone restricted to just AT&T)
- Vastly higher number of hardware platforms now available to run Android, giving consumers greater choice

In the end as far as security integrity is involved, Apple has the superior product, however, keeping such a tight hold on the hardware and software and limiting the iPhone to a single carrier will only hurt them going forward.

When the media and others continue to harp on Steve Jobs, they merely prove the point that he is king when it comes to these devices.

When Jobs is no longer talked about, Android or some other device will be king.

Until then, I’ll just sit back and watch with envy for Steve Jobs and his unquestionable success.

Good for him.

I’ve got an iPhone4. I’m loving it. It’s unquestionably the most “Can’t do without” device I’ve ever owned, and I’ve been a gadget freak since decades before the term came into vogue.

My Droid arrived with Android 2.0, the immediately updated to 2.1. Under those releases, the 1 GB of FLASH used by the OS was divided into 512MB for Android/512MB for user apps. No user apps could be executed from the SD card. The upgrade to Android 2.2 fixes that limitation. You can now execute Android apps from the SD card, so you app storage limitations are now limited by SD card size. As 2.2 is rolled out, more devices will have access to the fix.

Maybe that idea of making the iphone and ipad only work on AT&T wasn’ such a good idea, huh?

Your software comment rather baffles me. You do know that Apple allows others to develop of the iPhone and other products don’t you? Apple does review those products, but it’s got one hell of an application base out there for us to tap into.

As for security, there you go.

I’ve been a Windows guy going way back. I wish that platform was as secure.

Will Android run into problems along these lines. I am waiting to see. It’s an interesting question. I actually hope it doesn’t, but only time will tell.

Moved from iPhone to Android many moons ago and haven’t looked back, now if only our provider (Rogers in Canada) would hurry up and get us to 2.2. I could do it myself but risk bricking the unit due to the 911 fix firmware which locked the phone down, so takes some doing to root it and put new firmware on and not always successful. Oh well I’ll wait and see :(

It was a contractual issue, not a technological one. That, and the GSM systems rare more global.

AT&T was the only carrier at the time to agree to Job’s requirements. And those requirements did change the mobile game.

My iPhone4 also shoots the 720 HD. The picture is excellent in that the color is very nice. I just shot the dedication of my niece with it and the quality was excellent.

I would say the video weakness is that a bright background source can overpower the video. If you’re careful, that isn’t generally a problem. The low light capability is excellent. The ability for the camera to focus close in, is nice. The provided light works very well in the video mode.

Is it the ultimate camera experience? Not really. It isn’t meant to be. It is definitely a great camera utility though. I find myself using it frequently.

As for connectivity, it sounds like you have the upper hand there. I do edit my movies on the phone and burn them to DVD. And when I place that video in my BlueRay upgrade capable player, it plays full screen on my HDTV. Honestly, it looks very nice there.

I use a utility in my laptop to burn the video to DVD. It’s Win X DVD Author.

Thanks for the mention. I guess he had to take a stand based on what he wanted folks to run across when visiting the iTunes store. If it costs him money and he’s willing to endure the reduce revenues, it’s something to ponder.

Some will think it’s none of his business determining such things.

If someone has a moral stand, I’m not against it.

Of course his decision affects a lot of other people’s bottom lines too though.

Later...

Android did that. Turns out it sucks for anything not re-worked for mobile devices. And if a site has to to re-work the video, might as well go straight H.264/HTML5.

dumbass,

you saw this happen before when you kept such a tight grip on the Macintosh, etc.

The PC, a more open platform, came along and kicked your butt.

Yeah, the iPhone’s cool, but having the arrogant policy of punishing people for installing “unauthorized” apps is going to kill you when someone else comes along and “allows” people to do so.

My wife and I could get Virgin Mobile's $25/month unlimited text/data/300 minute talk plan but neither one of us texts anything and I didn't think that the perhaps once or twice yearly feat of being able to post live from some event makes a data plan worth it. Trying to surf the web on a 2-inch screen? Nothing is that important it can't wait until I get in front of my 22-inch monitor.

I think you’re on the right track. The net would be very difficult, unless a severely cut/down sight had a mobile portal.

The text function does come into play more than you might think. The wife is on the way to the store and you remember you need something additional. She or you are in a meeting and the other needs to provide some information without interrupting the process. One of you are out with others, and the other wants to know if dinner plans would work out.

The problem is, you haven’t generally thought in those terms. Once you can, you’ll be surprised how helpful the texting can be.

You can also send texts to multiple people. They respond to multiple people and arrangements are made quickly, over a group.

You take care.

You thot wrong... iPhones do HD video... and with an adaptor can feed HD video to HDMI... and edit it directly in the iPhone with iMovie, then upload it to the cloud, or to your computer. The iPhone 4 has a ambient sound mic for background muting as well as the voice mic... if that's what you are talking about.
