Federal judge orders revised spotted owl plan
KOMO TV (Seattle) ^ | 9/2/2010

Posted on 09/02/2010 3:14:30 PM PDT by llevrok

SEATTLE (AP) - A federal court judge in Washington, D.C., has ruled the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must revise a Bush administration recovery plan for the northern spotted owl.

U.S. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan on Wednesday ordered the federal agency to come up with a new recovery plan within nine months for the threatened bird, which has been at the center of a long battle over logging in the Northwest.

The judge also required revisions to the owl's critical habitat, which had been cut under the Bush administration.

The Obama administration had asked the federal court to send back the 2008 recovery and habitat plans, citing political interference in owl protections by a former deputy assistant Interior secretary, Julie MacDonald.

Having grown up in a Washington state coastal town that lived (then) on logging and lumber, I can say with out any question that spotted owl is one of the biggest ecological hoax's ever contrived. It appears Obama's Dept of Interior is perpetrating that sham.

Of course this administration would do this: more government control, less business.

I grew up and still live in a western washington coastal community. Logging was HUGE here the entire time that I was growing up and we have only the greenie weenies to blame for destroying what was at one time a thriving local economy.

These people really suck.

We used to be a self governing people.

No elected official had to go on record to destroy the lives of tens of thousands.

That type of government is called tyranny.

The solution for the poor, endangered, spotted owl is clear cuts. When the evil timber companies are allowed to pillage the land via clear cuts the owls can see the prey they are hunting so much better and they thrive.

Don't tell this to the tree hugging greenies as it makes them spit and sputter. Rational thought and logic don't mix with feel good politics.

I'd love a link for a little (not a FLOOD) more info about that.

In trade I offer the demise (damn well hope so!) of the spotted owl via birdie miscegenation. Yeah, sparred owls! I hear the barred owls here in W.Mass early in the morning: Who who who cooks for youuuu? The bird books phrase it kinda weirdly, eh?

Yep. Let the fascist federal black robes send the Chick-chick-chicken federal marshals out and see how they fare.

And this will not be a Holywood Harrison Ford movie.

The thing about federal marshals is that they’re good at shooting dogs and little kids, but they’ve never taken on men.

Lol. Kind of tough raising predatory flying birds as livestock, I’d imagine. At least cows, pigs, and sheep would be too big for them to try and eat... chickens would probably get nervous though!

I was working at the Trojan Nuclear Plant at the time the original report was issued.

Two of the people I worked with lived in Olympia and their neighbor worked for the State of Washington as a wildlife biologist. He had spent the last eleven years observing and collecting information on spotted owls inhabiting SECOND GROWTH timber.

(For those who do not know or remember, the Jack Ward Thomas Report on Spotted Owls concerned birds in OLD GROWTH timber. Spotted Owls outside of OLD GROWTH timber were completely ignored. His report was political, not scientific, and had a predetermined outcome.)

The states of Oregon and Washington both protested the decision to halt timber harvesting, claiming the report was inaccurrate and excluded facts such as the existence of owls in timber other than old growth. Their protests were ignored by the Department of the Interior.

The Department of the Interior, since Bruce Babbett was the Secretary under Bill Clinton, has been rife with radical enviromental wackos.

The Spotted Owl is also the work of the large timber companies who now control all the logging in Humboldt county because they can afford the costly timber harvest plans to harvest trees...

they can afford the costly timber harvest plans to harvest trees

Having worked in the forest products industry for 35 years and being raised in a small Washington state logging town, I can tell you that your sour grapes comment about only large companies being able to log in Humboldt or other logging counties is off target.

Companies have difficulty with these exotic resource plans. They are expensive as up to 25% if the land they own is now not usable due to environmental limits. Imagine paying full price for a four bed room house and being TOLD you can not use one room (or suffer millions in fines and having the rest of your house's use tied up in litigation.)

So what has this meant to my home town? Where once streets and stores were full, now they are vacant. Where once there were high (not just good) paying jobs, there has been 15% unemployment for the last 20 years. The biggest employer is Welfare. The only new building being built are government offices. A saw mill my employer owned since the 1920s is now closed. They survived the change from large to small logs. But the last blast of environmental limits made logs too expensive. They hired 3000 workers in the 70's and now have about 100. The logs now go off shore to Asia.

The town has become a haven for indigent from Western Washington because the social services are so good. In short, the town is dead of any positive life. The forest products companies did not run the small tree farmer out of Humboldt County or my Grays Harbor County. The environmentalists did (mission accomplished, assholes) and now the illegal immigrants run the show there.

evidently, the spotted owl is pretty stupid. In 1982 i was operating an 18 wheeler cross country moving truck and one night in Oregon a huge spotted owl hit the passenger side windsheild while I was going about 75 mph, it woke up my girlfriend and she started screaming because the claws were hanging down from where it was stuck in the visor.

I pulled it out and took pictures, it had about a 4-5 foot wingspan

stupid bird that deserves extinction

I’d say its not a growth industry. Housing starts are pretty non-existent, carpenters are slower than they were in the early 80’s around here (NE KS, hour from KC).

There are some hardwood loggers around here. Furniture and pallet lumber. They’re still buying timber but I haven’t checked prices lately, got to be down.

Trees to me are just slow-growing asparagus. Highly renewable and sustainable. The market figured that out, the government doesn’t need to tell us.

I worked for Mother Weyerhaeuser and recall Pres. Bill Clinton holding a timber summit in 1989 that was to get displaced wood workers/loggers back to work.

We were rolling on the floor with every lie that came out of that SOB's mouth. It was a preview of other lies that were to come out of the bastard (in the literate, not slang use of that word).

Weyerhaeuser used to offer about 3000 good paying, stable jobs in my home town. Today that is about 100 due to the cost of wood. What is cut today largely goes offshore (due also to the dollar's weakness).

Folks who used to have a 100 acre tree farm (for the kid's education) have let the plantations go because there is no market for the wood. Families have been ruined.

All over a F'n owl.

I had to sell my 55 acres of doug fir on the Klamath River to a timber company because the harvest plan was prohibitive for that small a lot but Simpson lumped it into another plan in the area. Sure the plans are expensive for them but... they have no competition for standing timber so they buy it cheaper. Currently there is Simpson, Sierra Pacific and Schimdbauer out of almost a hundred mills that operated here...

Maybe the judge will order the mass shooting of barred owls. As I recall, their habit of eating spotted owls caused the latter’s decline.

By the bye, have the Feds and the Kumbayah/Circle of Life crowd ever figured out where the old growth forest loving [and living] spotted owls lived before the old growth forests got old?
