The Corruption and Crime Commission has found a former Curtin University lecturer tried to pressure students into sexual favours in return for higher marks.
The CCC report revealed Nasrul Ali asked three students for sex in return for better marks while he was working at Curtin's Business School last year.
It says Dr Ali reduced the marks of a fourth female student because he was angry with her when she did not meet him while they were separately visiting Malaysia.
The CCC report says he targeted young, vulnerable, full-fee paying overseas students but none of them accepted his advances.
Three of the students were from China and one from Malaysia.
The students were being financially supported by their families, needed to pass their units and were at risk of losing their student visas.
The corruption watchdog has made five findings of serious misconduct against Dr Ali but has not recommended any further action because Dr Ali is no longer employed by the university and the four complainants are unwilling to pursue criminal charges.
The report says Curtin has accepted a series of recommendations to improve its practices, policies and procedures.
This is hardly news. Quite common at universities, in fact. Its just that the administrators hush it up.
We had a black professor who assault female students in the elevator. Administrators ignored it.
We had a female professor who have UG students over to her house for “study session.” Of course, it was to have sex with any student who showed up.
We had a male professor who would have sex with women while other stood outside the door to his office and listened.
We had an adjunct, teacher of the year, that was selling grades for sex. Caught when the girls who got an A for doing nothing were laughing about it and a serious student raised hell threatening to go to the press. THAT one they took seriously.
And on and on.
Oh, and our male Provost for Diversity got caught filming sex with young boys, then attempted to blackmail the parents.
Charming.
“none of them accepted his advances”
Angry Ali.
pervs of a feather flock together...
Too right.
Its just that the administrators hush it up.
They do - and in this case (I have heard some things about it) the real story is much worse than what is being reported. You would probably have picked up on that, while reading it. This is damage control, not the full story.
Oh, and the offender already has a job at another University.
What university are you talking about?
My understanding is that, traditionally, the academic world can be very Political, and often Sexist (even misogynistic). I’d think sexual harassment can also apply & Australia is no exception. Lots of egos flying around in various faculties. Not many have questioned the culture it seems - even in the context of a broader culture. It requires attention & correction, especially when it affects (innocent) students.
It is true, but I think that many Australian universities have a lot of what I would call “professional feminists”. They are not much help to other women, they feather their own nests and create cliques and special interest groups.
In this atmosphere, all sorts of quite serious misconduct can be overlooked.
>>>professional feminists
Totally agree. I’d say many are serious leftists too - I encountered that some 15 yrs ago. But, overall the academic world is very Political, regardless of gender.
I think (despite all the "official" literature published on what is expected proper conduct for the faculty) that the promise of sexual access to students (undergraduate and graduate) is the unwritten perquisite promised in faculty recruitment campaigns. It's right there along with the promise for help with relocation and buying a house, etc.
