UPDATE: Platform Explodes Offshore Louisiana
Rigzone ^ | Thursday, September 02, 2010 | Rigzone Staff

This Mariner Vermilion platform, is a 24-hour, manned fixed facility with two decks, heliport and crane. It was installed some 30 years ago, in 340 feet of water, and has produced both oil and natural gas since 1982. Water depth at Block 380, which Mariner has leased since 1974, ranges from 319 feet to 368 feet. Vermilion Block 380 is among the top six percent of gas producing leases in the area, which encompasses more than 480 natural gas producing leases

The 13 workers, wearing immersion suits had evacuated (jumped into the gulf) from the platform, have been evacuated and are safely accounted for with no injuries reported. Automated shutoff equipment on the platform safely turned off the flow of oil and gas from the platform's seven producing wells before the fire event and evacuation.

Anyone not suspicious about oil rigs exploding needs their head examined.

Terrorism (foreign or domestic) would be my first guess! How about you?

We never heard about hurricanes until they made land fall before Katrina. Now the news follows every storm that might become bigger. I wonder how common incidents like this are , how often they happen. I think we would have not heard this reported if it were not for the big event.

My guess would be a spark caused by the sandblasting equipment that met with a leak from the gas powered engines on the platform because it is so old it has not been upgraded to compressed air.

BINGO!!!

MSM got all revved up over this but had no where to go. Even the media's initial claims of a "sheen on the water" that was 100ft wide by one mile long (in those sea conditions, a bottle of Mazola could cause that) proved to be unfounded.

Yup. It makes them easier to spot in the blue Gulf waters.

I'm sure the 0bama Regime will release a statement explaining that they do not know what happened, why it happened, or even when it happened ... but that they are 100% absolutely, positively certain that it was not terror related.

"Nothing to see here! Move along now!"

(oh yeah, and Islam is a religion of peace)

Obama’s little swim in St Andrews Bay was a signal to the Coast Guard that the Gulf oil crisis was over, so no one is going to know if there is sheen or not. It’s putting me out of a job.

Dumb question - but don’t they give then a lifeboat or rubber raft on those platforms?
