Officer Waits Weeks To Report Stolen Guns (Axe To Grind Alert!)
WSMV ^ | 1 Sept 2010 | Charley Gordon

Two dangerous guns are in the hands of criminals who somehow stole them out of an officer's patrol car, according to a sheriff's report.

A Glock 23 rifle and a .40 caliber pistol were stolen out of the patrol car parked in front of the officer's house, the report said, and the officer may have waited weeks before telling anyone about the theft.

"All people should know better than to leave a gun like that in their vehicle," said Detective Brent Johnson of the Dickson County Sheriff's Office.

Yet, according to a sheriff's report, that's what law enforcement officer Constable Dale Selvidge did.

"The AR 15, it's an assault-type rifle. It will fire quite a few rounds quite fast, so that's one of the weapons we are particularly worried about," said Johnson.

Selvidge said he routinely left the guns in his car even when he's out of town, according to the report.

"He said the reason the guns were secured in his vehicle was because he had small kids in his house and he felt that being secured in the vehicle would be better," Johnson said.

Selvidge told deputies that his car lock doesn't always work properly, the report said. The day before he left town, Selvidge said, he pulled two men over for a traffic stop then took them back to his house and paid them to work on his car.

He told officers he isn't sure if the two men saw his guns.

The next night, Selvidge said, his wife heard dogs barking, and that may have been when the guns were stolen, but he really isn't sure, according to the report.

Selvidge left town Aug. 9 for another job he has. When he returned Aug. 26, that's when he said he noticed the weapons missing.

That’s a fare assessment. It had to be something under the table.....’to work on his car’ is such a weak-ass excuse that doesn’t make sense. Perhaps he might have even been ‘rolled’. Who is to say he didn’t get involved in something where he routinely let’s his guard down (the gloryhole at the local park for instance) and this one time it took a turn for the worse.....something just doesn’t smell right.

A detective said this? How many morons are employed as police officers anyway?

I think I see the problem now. Female reporter.

Having known quite a few females from Tennessee, I think that it's more a case of...

Just the tip of the iceberg that is law enforcement in the state of Tennessee. The level of corruption, incompetence and criminal misconduct here is only surpassed by New Orleans.

A Glock 23 rifle and a .40 caliber pistol

What's wrong with this sentence?

Simple.

Glock doesn't make rifles. However, the G23 is a semi-automatic, .40 S&W pistol.

I knew a guy that was going through a nasty divorce, his wife left the house and he looked all over for his gun...he called her and she said she had taken it....

He called the police and they took a report with her name. According to the cop, his gun was not part of any property she was legally welcome to and in fact she broke the law stealing a gun registered to another person..

He called her again and said he made a report. The gun was still in the house but she had put it in the attic....and now she was afraid the cops would come after her so she told him where she hid it....

Its just an FYI in the state of Michigan. If a soon to be X steals your gun, she can get arrested for having a gun in her possession that is not registered to her..

He called the cops back and told them the gun had been found.

More likely, he won't need one.

“Heck, for 100 bucks you can buy a gun cabinet. Not a safe exactly, but locked, pretty heavy duty steel, nobodies gonna get into it with spending at least an hour with a cutting tool and making a hellacious amount of noise in the process!”

I wish this were true. Any teenager with a crowbar can get into a $100 “safe” in well under a minute very quietly. The kind of protection you describe will cost over $1500. A $100 safe will keep out small children as would some decent gun locks.
