U6 - real unemployment - increased from 16.5% to 16.7% which is the highest since April. Of course, this was UNEXPECTED!

Only one more report before election day in November.

Count on an unexpectedly good report in the October report. And count on a major downward revision in November.

Ask the people who lost their jobs whether the change was "little". By my calculation, a net -54,000 jobs with private payrolls adding 67,000 means well over 100,000 people lost their jobs.

“about unchanged”????????

What a joke. I’ve heard the unemployment rate described as “unchanged” when it remains the same but I’ve never heard this type verbage. How many tenths does it have to jump to actually change?

LOL

I was thinking something very similar to that. Even though I’d nearly bet my retirement that the actual unemployment rate is over 10%, the Federal bureaucracy and the Democratic propaganda machine known as the MSM will NEVER report it. It’s a psychological barrier that they know will REALLY hurt the Dems, even more than they already stand to be hurt in November.

Yes - I’m with you. As I posted last month, figures don’t lie but liars sure figure. They settle on a % and then tinker with the numbers below and above and voila, it comes out exactly as they want it to.

It doesn’t seem to match the reports for the weekly number of people applying for UI, which have been running at about a rate of 400k per month for the last two months. These people might be finding new work more quickly, but given the other economic numbers such as manufacturing, inventory and sales that show shrinkage, I have doubts about accuracy of this one.

Team Obama will use every manipulation possible to keep it under 10% through the November election.

We have had millions more lose their jobs since it hit 10% in Oct-Nov-Dec 2009.

Astoundingly, it dropped to 9.7% by Jan 2010 and has managed to stay [aka, been manipulated to stay] in the mid-9% range this year, even with over 400,000 new weekly job loss claims.

Think you are right. Team obama and his media will skew the numbers or just make the numbers up in order to get a win in November. If with lose, the numbers will go way up becuase they will try to put the stink on Repubs. You know the drill. “American business are laying off more and more in anticipation of racist, bigoted, homophobic republican policies. If they win, and after the taxes increase, they will report that the unemployment numbers are going down because American businesses welcome higher taxes.

They are screwing around with these numbers. BIG TIME.

How has it been 9.5% for one straight year with net loss of jobs overall?

You need to create 200,000 per month just to keep afloat with the population. 300,000-400,000 to make a dent.

This is all bogus.

The MSM in the form of ABC radio news is already reporting it as “good news” because observers thought it would be much worse. They even quoted on person who said that he was “relieved” by the news and that stock futures were up.

Haven’t you noticed the trend? The day before reports come out, the media purposely predicts slightly worse than they really believe just to dampen the blow. Another Freeper once said something like, “oh good, it’s only a 2 ft hole in the hull, I was expecting a 3 ft hole” or something to that affect. People don’t buy it. 9.6% is worse than 9.5%, no matter how you sugarcoat it.

Exactly right. We're creating less than half the number of jobs required in order to keep pace with population growth. We need 200,000 a month, and we're only creating about 90,000 a month. Yet the unemployment rate stays steady.

Cannot be true.

I heard a news guy on CNN the other day talking about the “real” unemployment rate being at 16%. He said the official rate was 9.5%, I believe from last month, but that the “real” rate was higher. He just mentioned it as an afterthought in the segment he was reporting. It struck me that these news guys know something we don’t; i.e. that the official unemployment rate number reported in the MSM is artificially kept lower than the actual rate, based on how they do the calculation.

Or, is it an open secret that the “real” unemployment rate is well into double digits percentages, but officially, the administration is working hard to somehow keep the official number below the magic 10%????

Yup. In fact from July to August, the official unemployment rate ROSE from 9.5 to 9.6 percent. But they wont use the word "rose" or any synomym. It's like living in the Soviet Union and being fed a daily dose of informational garbage.

Yes, the number they give is called U2 (if I’m not mistaken), and it does not count the so-called “discouraged”, those whose unemployment has run out and who aren’t really looking because they know no one is hiring. If you count all those people, you get the number called U6, and it is around 16%-17.5%. But that’s probably undercounted too and the real number is around 20%.

But hey, that means 80% still have jobs, right?

This is all bogus.

It has been bogus since they changed the way unemployment is counted back in the 60s-70s. Used to be employment was those who had full time jobs, everyone else was counted as unemployment.’

Using the old system, real uneployment is well over 23% and into Great Depression numbers.
