My brother lives in CHCH
Hope he’s ok. Prayers for everyone’s safety down there!
That’s a BIG shaker— hoping the damage is small and folks are OK.
Hope he’s okay...are they “earthquake-proof” in NZ??...building codes and the like?? ...magritte
Do a search for “Newstalk ZB” to find an audio stream in New Zealand.
Is anyone else having trouble with the servers ???
Ok I called my sister who lives 50 miles away...
She hadnt heard from our brother but she said...
It was felt over most of NZ
Frosty still night, everyone felt it in their beds...
They felt it at 4.39 AM NZ time..
Sounded VERY LOUD LIKE A FREIGHT TRAIN..
she was surprised at the noise...
She said she heard it not from the ground but in the air...
That sounds more like a tornado to me...
Nobody dead or hurt ..
That in itsaelf is a miracle..
Local color please?
Just tried to email my friend who lives in ChristChurch. Bounced back immediately as undeliverable with the cause being “tower...tower...” so my guess is electrical and towers are down.
Have good customer over in Christchurch. Been dealing with him for many years. Hope he’s okay!

I have a 1st cousin in Christchurch.
First time I’ve been able to get on all day.
Just got off the phone to my mother in New Zealand - she lives in Masterton (lower North island) and she didn’t even know there had been an earthquake but to be fair it happened at 4.35am local. Felt in southern south island mainly but luckily it was deep at 35km. I remember the South Island West Coast 7.1 earthquake in 1968 which was felt v strongly in the lower North Island as it was much shallower and to this day I still can’t believe how much the earth can move! You have earthquake and Tsunami drill hammered into you from birth out there for good reason. Luckily the UK doesn’t have very many!
Struck 30km west of Christchurch in Darfield
No deaths reported but some injuries
Felt widely over the South Island but not the North Island (I live in the North Island)

This is why we still carry a landline and a non-cordless phone.

Share Print Font: +-Rescue teams were searching for people trapped in the rubble of a major earthquake that caused extensive damage Saturday in Christchurch, New Zealands second-largest city.
Basic sanitation was likely to become a major health concern because numerous sewer and water lines were damaged across the city, Civil Defense officials said. About 1,000 residents of two suburbs were put on alert to evacuate their homes as widespread damage to sewer pipes threatened major flooding.
Two men were seriously injured and scores of other people suffered less serious injuries in the aftermath of the quake, which registered 7.0 on the Richter scale. It struck at 4:35 a.m. (1:35 p.m. Friday ET), the U.S. Geological Survey said in Washington. “

I visit Christchurch fairly regularly but am nowhere near it at the moment. Prayers to all.
I’ve lived through a 7.0. This is bad news.
The 7.2 that struck on Easter near San Diego did damage like that to roads near Mexicali. Quite a mess.
That’s what our last one sounded like. A train in the distance.
Thanks for posting that link!
Coincidence? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4081089.stm
“Coincidence?”
Good catch. It’s a very REAL possibility.
There was a lot of talk about hurricane Katrina forming over the Atlantic at the same time George Bush was pushing Israel to accept concessions with the Palistinians. I don’t remember the specifics, but there were many “coincidences” noted at the time.
Christchurch was the first city in NZ
I had family on the First Four Ships, 1850
Also called the Summer Ships...
Equal to the Mayflower in importance and reverence..
The Church of England sent 16 ship loads of settlers to Canterbury..
The Compact mentioned the Mayflower and promised that the same thing would not happen..
Workmen were sent our ahead of the settlers..
Before the ships arrived there were already roads, houses, stores, wharves etc built and gardens started...
However the road from Lyttle to to Christchurch was not finished..
They arrived in Lyttleton and had to walk over what was called the Bridle Path..Not easy to do...My daughter walked it for the 150th Anniversary ... she was in shorts and sneakers...my ggg grandmother had worn all the petticoats etc and helped several little children as well..
My family lived in Hagley Park for a few weeks until they moved into a house and eventually moved to the Rakaia River area..
Christchurch is a beautiful city ...I hope the destruction is not too bad..
my father was born and raised there on Montreal Street... my grandmothers old house was moved to the Ferrymead project..
We used to visit a lot when I was a child...At that time the names of the passengers on the 4 ships were etched into the sides of the Cathedral just above the sidewalk on all 4 sides of the Canterbury Cathedral in Cathedral Square ...They were easy to read and photograph..We were proud of the names of our family and always spent time there..
PC and dislike for the white mans invasion caused them to be torn up and put in a corner in shiny marbly stuff that reflects everything including the one holding the camera and most people dont know what they mean...
I was last there 2 years ago...Cathedral Square is now more like a Renaissance fair than a Christian center for worship...
THANKS FOR THE PHOTOS LINK
POLITICAL CORRECTNESS RUN AMOK . . . HYPOCRITICAL EVIL FROM HELL, imho.
CONGRATS ON QUITE A FAMILY HISTORY.
SO, I gather you still have family there?
Yes the orgiginal carvings were no hurting anyone...
They were just the passenger lists on the ships..
the Sir George Seymour, the Charlotte Jane, the Randolph and the Cressy (ours)
They were a point of interest and a tourist attraction and in a place of prominence..
now there is nothing to show that Europeans ever had anything to do with the founding of Christchurch or Canterbury...
Christchurch has a weird PC feel to it..
Even the Christmas parade in 2008 was called a Santa Parade and had only 2 Christian groups who sang Christmas carols..
the rest had strange music and songs that had nothing to do with the birth of the King...
The parade had more of an appearance of a UN summit than a celebration of the Babe in Bethelhem...
and yes our parents are dead but my brother and sister have children and grandchildren..
I hope to go for Christmas next year..
My ancestors were also the first settlers in NYC, (the Dutch ship the Niew Netherlandt)
and the first to Canada..(When it was Canada, 1784) They were women and children Loyalists who fled there about Nov 1776..
my blood lines got around..
:)
Interesting. Impressive.
I’ve read somewhere along in my puzzle piece collecting . . . that NZ has been engineered/designated by the GLOBALISTS:
These traitorous blokes:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/religion/2519352/posts?page=2#2
As a NWO playground/retreat center/ some such. You ever heard of anything like that?
New Zealanders dont tend to have much patriotic fight in them...
It seems to have been weened out of them..
NZ was out of the mainstream of life for so long..
When I went there in 1978 it weas about 20 years behind times and ignorant of what was going on in the world...
Although they people still had individual opinions...
Contrast 2000 when I was there for the 150th doings...
We were all on the wharf in Lyttleton and the Prime Minister Helen Potter was addressing us about our illustrious ancestors..
We were towards the front and I could see that helen was nervous and reading from a carefully prepared script..
She said something and I commented..(as an American feels free to do)
My sister shushed me and told me that I couldnt give my opinions in public..
Since it was just a mild critism and not one advocating anachy, I was stunned..later my other sister agreed with her...I had done wrong..
BTW In Dec 2000 many people in NZ were pulling for Algore to win...including members of my own family..they couldnt tell me why ...and the question stumped them...
If you look up the Green Peace group and what they got up to in the beginning ...one of the things they did was go out to NZ and protest our US nuclear ships ...they didnt want them to dock in the NZ harbours...
If I remember rightly...the GP won...
Its unfortunate that NZ has gone with the flow and almost tossed out their English heritage...
To talk to a New Zealander now is to talk to a stranger...
I made a point of speaking to as many as I could in 2008...
Whereas once there would have been a point of identification as students of NZ history and culture, many of them were now indoctrinated with CNN and a liberal slant of their own country and the rest of the world...
Several were surprised to learn that I did not agree with our newly elected “president”
TN - Intersting take on my country and it’s people (I’ve been UK based for 11 years now but was back in late 2009 to see family). The real turning point in my mind was the arrival of the Lange Govt in 1984 with his cadre of hard core Vietnam War protesting, Green Peace loving hippies of which Helen Clark was a leading memeber. Labour made no secret that they would refuse to accept USN ship visits and they lied to Schultz and Reagan about what they were going to do. I joined the NZ MoD in 1986 and spent the next 13 years observing first hand the shocking damage Lange and co’s handiwork did to our defence force and relationships with our ANZUS partners. Militarily we have never recovered and never will.
Add to that the even more crazy decision to place a legal interpretation and status on the Treaty of Waitangi and volia you have a recipe for racial division and acrimony which now boils just below the surface. New Zealand is appallingly PC and as I was leaving the MoD in 1999 we were being forced and threatened to take cultural awareness courses. That was a final straw. I don’t disagree with your observations about Liberal tendencies and bias fed by junk news & entertainment sources. Indoctrination is nearly complete care of the education system with kids including my nieces and nephews happliy and ignorantly spouting PC/Liberal crap. It isn’t the country I grew up in and frankly it is lost for good.
I still enjoy holidaying there though :-).
It isnt the country I grew up in and frankly it is lost for good.

Nor the one I grew up in during 1950-60s
you mentioned the anti-Vietnam crowd..
In 1968 or there abouts some protesters pushed some coffins for miles down a NZ highway..(I think it was in Canterbury..
there were 28 coffins, one for each NZer who had died in Vietnam at that time...
The families of the dead soldiers didnt ask them to, they just did it...
At the time i was appalled...
I had 4 cousins in Vietnam and my brother was in the NZ Navy patroling the China Sea..and I had girl cousins in the NZ Air Force based in NZ...
I keep calling Helen “Potter” but her name was Clark wasnt it ???
When I saw her in Lyttleton I felt she was a weak leader, a puppet..She read of a greeting in Maori to us and every time she said a word that I had never heard before, a word that sounded like a certain 4 letter curse word, the Maoris standing near us would giggle amd laugh hysterically...She repeeated it several times and she had to have heard their response...I was embarrassed for her...she was obviously set up...the PC idiot...
The Maori I learnt in school was not the Maori she was speaking...
TN,
Tks your reply. I was very young when the VN war protests were at their peak but my dad and brother in law were both in the NZ Army at the time. The former served in the Emergency in Malaya and trained many of the signallers who deployed to Phuc Tuoy Province with the ANZAC Brigade, and the latter was at RMC Duntroon but graduated too late for the war. The B in law later went on to attend the Command and Staff College at Ft Leavenworth (81) and he and my sister both said it was the most enjoyable 2 years of their life. I recall seeing footage of returning NZ service personnnel being heckled and attacked on the return home parades. My father and his colleagues had nothing but contempt and disgust for the NZ Labour (Socialist) Party, Lange and all of his fellow travellers.
Yea it was Helen Clark and she was a nasty piece of work. I think she’s now got some sinecure on the diplomatic or UN circuit. They just can’t keep their snouts out of the public trough.
My best pals still work for the NZ MoD and I was shocked at the depth of their admiration and praise for the horrid Obama. Like you said in the earlier email many NZers were amazed others don’t think he is worth spit. Even got called a racist. We had a ferocious set to over that but they are real clear now on my views about the current usurper in the WH.
INCREDIBLE.
THANKS FOR THE INFORMATIVE NARRAGIVE.
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE. Confirms my own ‘from a distance’ perspective.
HORRIFICALLY DREADFUL. HOWEVER . . .
HOPE IN GOD.
HE HAS A THOROUGH HOUSE CLEANING RIGHT ON THE NEAR HORIZON.
The final sweep will be the literal Armageddon.
