I've attended only 1 professioanl hocky game in my life and that was the 1980 All Star Game in LA. The guys I was with were from Boston and were real hocky fans. They dropped the F-bomb 1 time too many and the guys ahead of us thought they would confront them. The result looked a lot like what we saw in this video.

The old guy at the US Open should never have attacked the loud-mouthed kid just as the guys in LA should never have attacked my friends. There are other courses of action.

Both parties are now suing each other. If you listen to the tape, it appears the punk is really f-ing the woman. That might be considered an assault- ie “fighting words”. Even after he sat down the punk again effed her which justifies the father at least trying to beat his ass. I’d award the punk a kick in the butt and the father and daughter the cost of their Open tickets.

It could be a quilting bee.

If it's in New York and there's cheap seats to be had, there's going to be problems.

People like that are the reason that New York can't have nice things.

What I saw was the old geezer grabbing the guy’s head and punching him FIRST. That looked to me like a clear cut case of self defense - I think the kid went easy on him.

Whatever was said doesn’t matter. That’s not an ‘assault’. You can yell all you want, that isn’t illegal. If I’m in the jury the old geezer is toast.

I too agree.

I’m inclined to blame the one who escalated the cuss-fest into a physical fight, to be the guilty party. In this case, it was clearly the old man who physically assaulted the younger one.

I didn’t see any punches thrown. It looked like the older fellow had the right intentions but lacked in delivery options. He should have thrown a short right into the punk’s mouth as soon as he moved past the woman, then pushed him into the lower seating area.

the old guy was just trying to jam a bar of soap in the punk ass's mouth. That's not assault. it's community service

You're sure of that? How do you know that the old guy wasn't just going off to find some security folks and, as he tried to get by the young jerk, the young jerk didn't knee him or otherwise cause the old guy to lose his balance?

The old guy reminded me of another New York moment when Don Zimmer rushed at Pedro Martinez like a mad bull; like Zimmer, he got caught up in the emotion of the moment and forgot he was — well, old.

Having said that, the father-daughter were fully within their rights to object vehemently to having to suffer through the young guy’s foul-mouth. Their ticket gave then the expectation to enjoy the tennis match without the kid’s aggressively foul mouth violating their space.

Once the daughter stood up to confront him, and kid turned his foul mouth directly against her rather than (presumably) the tennis match, then his behavior mover closer to civil assault — because there was some menacing arm-waving / gesturing going on as well. Civil assault only requires the THREAT to injure, not a punch (which is battery).

Once the kid sat down and continued to curse her, its a factual question as to whether she was still threatened - if yes, then she had a right to self-defense, and if so, then her dad would have had a right to act as well (using her right). So in sum — it’s not always strictly a matter of who throws the first punch — self defense can turn on how imminent is the illegal threat.

Now, having a legal right to self-defense doesn’t mean that its the smartest option, especially when there are security guards around. On the other hand, they seemed awfully slow to respond to the situation.

So — the specific facts about what was said, when, will dictate the outcome, and clearly there were a LOT of witnesses who can testify. My prediction is that Dad and daughter walk, the kid gets some sort of disturbing-the-peace charge, with big fine and community service.

Or maybe he blocked the old geezer with his legs and wouldn’t move them. The old geezer slapped the punks beer out of his hand, the punk jumped up and the geezer attacked.

The article says that the woman first punched the younger man.

The younger man cussed at her, and the older man later tried to strangle him.

That’s how I know.

Before the older man tried to strangle the younger one, the woman had already punched the man. It’s in the article.

The article says that the woman first punched the younger man.

Who you gonna believe: the article or your lyin' eyes?

The woman argues with the jerk, and after a while the geezer tugs on the back of her shirt to pull her away. She does go away crossing past the geezer away from the jerk.

Then the geezer gets up, and tries to pass in front of the jerk. The jerk stands up and gets in the geezer's face and then they begin to fight. Afterward the woman tries to hit the jerk; and suave dude that he is he tries to hit her back but is restrained by some levelheaded people sitting nearby.

If I ran the tennis tournament he would no longer be allowed to attend, this year or any year.
