Can Social Security save Democrats this fall? (Time again to scare those senior citizens)

Can Social Security save Democrats this fall?
By Chris Cillizza

Democrats, faced with a worsening national political climate and daunting historical midterm election trends, are turning to Social Security as an issue where they believe they can score political points and set the stakes of what a Republican-controlled Congress would look like.

**SNIP**

The strategy behind the Democratic attacks is simple. Older voters are deeply suspicious of any changes to the retirement program -- it's not an accident that Social Security is referred to as the "third rail of American politics" -- and they also happen to be the most reliable voters in lower turnout midterm elections.

According to exit polling from the 2006 midterms, nearly three in ten (29 percent) of voters were 60 and older; Democrats won that age group 50 percent to 48 percent.

Republicans dismiss the Democratic strategy as an age-old attempt to change the subject. "This is a transparent attempt to distract from their budget busting, job-killing policies that have left voters asking the simple question that Democrats still can't answer: 'Where are the jobs,'" said National Republican Congressional Committee communications director Ken Spain.

(Spain also noted that the independent FactCheck.org website disputed Democratic claims that Republicans are "eager" to privatize Social Security.)

And, according to several recent polls, Social Security barely registers as an issue on most voters minds.

A guy in his 70s recently told me that he’s feeling the effects of the new health care law. He said under penalty of law, he and his wife both now have to pay for Medicare. He said it’s $330 for each of them, so $660 per month that he didn’t have to cough up before this fascist legislation was passed.

I saw Gabrielle Giffords running commercials last night accusing Jesse Kelly of wanting to privatize Social Security. That crap goes back to Reagan.

If the morons vote for our little feminist ditz based on that they are even more stupid than I think. Now keep in mind the voters of my district are really, really, REALLY stupid. But we shall see.

The only seniors who vote for the Dems because they buy into the “Republicans are going to take your benes away” are ones too stupid to realize that the Dems just slashed their Medicare benefit and who also don’t care about loading up their grandchildren with debt.

If the 'Social Security' gambit doesn't work they can always run ads claiming that all black churches will be burned to the ground unless Democrats win. It worked for Clinton.

Dems care nothing for seniors.

They have raided social security trust funds since Lyndon Johnson in order to pay for their pet projects and pay for all their other entitlements like welfare which is rife with waste fraud and abuse.

Obama is no different.

The problem the Dems find themselves in with this argument is that the FDR generation has taken a dramatic decrease since the 2006 while the baby boomers are now qualifying for social security. This may not on the surface seem like much, but privatizing social security was very popular in the baby boomers and they are also the first generation to see retirement from 401k funds, IRAs, and other finacial vehicles that were not available to the FDR generation. In many cases Social seucrity within the baby boomer generation is seen as fun money and not as a necessary part of retirement.

I read your little 'article'. Although the author says we could raise taxes by 1 percent, what he is talking about is one precent of our gross national product. So, a car that costs 40K, taxes would be raised by 400, sometimes that is the total amount of profit that the manufacturer has. This is a crippling increase in taxes.

This liberal article also mentions cutting defense spending. It refers to the "Bush Tax Cuts" as benefiting only the top 2%, and suggests that they increased the deficit, when in fact, they increased tax revenue. Increased spending increased the deficit.

Anytime anyone talks about a 1% tax increase, ask, 'one percent of what, exactly?'

Privatizing it is the way to go because it would give the decision to the people whose money it is, not the politicians to sue as they see fit which is usually wasteful.

This article just confirms for me that the left is clueless this election cycle. The healthcare law lost seniors for them (not all, but most) and its implementation is already scaring them. I know that my parents are feeling the effects. Each time they go to see their doctors they are learning every day just what this new bill will mean to them. (They are also learning what the new taxes on capital gains will mean to them and their retirement income). The dems trying the old social security scare tactic is like trying to put out a barn fire by throwing a cup of water on it.

Seniors are much more upset that Obamacare means the end of Medicare Advantage as they know it.

I went on SS last year and although it's not exactly "fun money," you're not far off.
For the last 20 years I listened to all those financial "experts" claiming you needed at least 80% of your income to retire comfortably. BS.
Unless you live an exorbitant life style, they're all full of crap.

Can the party that cut medicare by $500 billion scare voters into thinking that the GOP might cut social security?

Can the party whose President says that “We need only minor adjustments to social security” scare the voters into thinking that the GOP will slash social security?

Most people now understand that Socialist Stupidty is toast. There is no saving it, it is unrecoverable. So best to just let it crater and pick up the pieces when it does.

THe democRATS will pay a stiff price for their ponzi scheme. The redeeming value of the Madoff scandal is that it is illustrative of how Socialist Stupidity operates.

If one were to apply the same formulas that were in place when this disaster was imposed, (i.e. life expectancy was 58 for whites and 52 for blacks) you would have to raise the retirement age to 81 yeas old with a median life expectancy of 76 years.

Hah, try to sell that democRATS.

The simplest solution that the democRATS see to fix their ponzi scheme it to limit the number of persons who actually make it over the finish line.

That is the unstated goal of ObamaCare.

Would Make Bernie Madoff Proud, work your whole life and have 15% of your pay put into an Account for your golden years, while all the time the Government is spending the money everywhere and replacing the dollars with IOUs,now the Government tells you the program is Bankrupt but that is Ok, now give me More out of every paycheck,Work longer so we hope you die and dont Collect anything! But dont listen to those Lousy Republicans who want to give the Younger Generation a Chance to get out of this Ponzi Scheme by allowing them to put some of THEIR HARD EARNED INCOME into their OWN account where if something happens to them THEIR Family Gets their own Money,IMAGINE THAT,but the Republicans Cant make a Case for that.AND BERNIE MADOFF IS IN PRISON?
Government employees retire with Million Dollar pensions and dont have to deal with this crap they Administer with NO Ramifications?
Talk about a Bunch of Suckers the American People are.

The best thing that can be done is not to eliminate altogether the payroll social security tax and allow that money to be spent and saved and invested by the actual person who earns it.

In fact the same can be said of all the payroll taxes deducted from salaries.

Let the people who eanr the money do what they want to do with it. And then let the laxy asses get off their butts, get a job so they will have some money otherwise they can move to Europe, Asia, South America or Africa.
