Dear John Boehner, Ted Poe, and Members of the incoming 112th Congress: If you do only one thing in your time in Washington, and frankly I hope you do only one thing given your propensity to expand government (other than eradicating Obamacare), it is this: SAVE THE LIGHT BULB. People may not realize it, but one of the first acts of the Democratic Congress in 2007, was to ban the light bulb effective in 2014.
Seriously.
Now, you may say that this is an exaggeration, and it is a bit, but the incandescent light bulb is the light bulb of choice for millions of Americans. It turns on instantly, it can be tossed in the trash without summoning a hazmat team, and is cheap.
The compact fluorescents cannot be treated that way and cost more. Likewise, we are forced to deal with China for every purchase.
If Republicans want to bring change, they need to save the incandescent light bulb. From christmas trees to kitchens, the incandescent light bulb is a staple of the American household and Congresss ban is offensive.
We should get every Republican out there to pledge their support to saving the incandescent light bulb when they take back Congress.
My husband (the great GOP_Harley_Guy) brought home one of those new lightbulbs. He put it in our table lamp and turned it on. The light was such an ugly brown color that I immediately had him remove it and throw it out. It was really that bad.
Well there goes the value of my incandescent stockpile.....
I did make out pretty well on all the Freon I stashed though.....
Could it be that THIS (Christmas Trees) was the actual target of this regime, in fact?
The number one advantage of incandescent light bulbs: THEY CAN ACTUALLY LIGHT UP A ROOM.
Yup!
I think its been shown that those new bulbs don’t put out as much light....I think I’ve had to increase my reading glasses up several step because of that....:)
Ban Toxic Twisties.
LED Christmas lights are available everywhere. They’re pretty nice, actually—more of a softer, blue glow than a yellow one.
Compact fluorescents STINK. They make a buzzing sound, they take over 5 minutes to attain full brightness, and on several occasions they have crapped out after a few hours. Give me a good old incandescent any day.
I will NOT buy the florescent bulbs.
When I run out of incansescent bulbs, I’ll use candles. At least I can SEE to read!
They are also horrible to read by.
I think this could be an important issue if brought to the public conciousness. It’s not just about light bulbs, but tying into how controlling Washington is of our personal lives, despite our own choices.
I agree. Save the lightbulb!
The sad irony is that they are claiming environmental reasons, when in fact the mercury bulb, that they want to use as a substitute, if it breaks, releases poisonous mercury fumes.
Did you keep any DDT? I think you can make a pile on that.
I had a difficult time finding a standard incandescent 65 watt recessed spot lamp. All they had was the new stuff for 10 times the price. Not gonna pay it. I will stock up my attic from the dollar store next time I am in there.
Same here FrankR... I have enough in every wattage until I’m in the history books, and I’m 55 years of age.
Yes, I noticed that too.
Molotov corktails!
The new bulbs are suppose to save so much electricity and money but it was never the light bulb that costs so much to use. You could leave your lights on 24/7 and your electric bill wouldn’t be very much higher. It’s all this stuff with motors (Fridges, Washer/Dryer etc) that use the bulk of electricity.
Call back the trash truck.
DDT? No that was 1972, I was just coming into adulthood and not nearly as savvy / cynical as I am today.
Ban the screwball Greenhouse Gasbag bulbs.
Just don’t tell that to the Democrats—they’ll take away your large appliances next!
“My husband (the great GOP_Harley_Guy) brought home one of those new lightbulbs. He put it in our table lamp and turned it on.”
You realize ... he might never hear the end of this?
I am in the process of moving to LEDs.
Well, instead of a nice soft white color, it was like a dingy yellow-brownish color. YUCKO!
On this subject I really dont care one way or the other except I feel people should have a choice.
A couple years ago I started replacing incandescent bulbs as they burned out. The fluorescents I use are just as bright, they cost a little more but last much longer. I havent had to replace any yet. They might take a fraction of a second to come on but I can live with that. My electric bill has also been lowered, I even leave the lights on in rooms Im not in and several I leave on all day.
Banning the Incandescent Light Bulb
http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=38646
“Critics of CFLs argue that exposure to mercury vapor is dangerous if the bulbs are broken, and others complained about CFL bulbs causing migraines and epilepsy attacks, resulting in medical groups asking for exemptions for those with health problems. They also point out that CFLs do not work well in colder temperatures nor do they work with dimmer switches.”
Also, I think they are going to ban 100W incandescent lightbulbs starting Jan 1, 2011.
Today's our 30th wedding anniversary.
We were both five years old when we were married.
One of those pre-arranged things. ;-)
As it stands right now, every dimmer in the country will have to be replaced.
You weren’t using a lampshade, were you? Those things look HORRIBLE coming through a warm-toned shade.
Oh, besides. He’s the “electrician” in the family, so he was doing his job. LOL.
Oh, besides. He’s the “electrician” in the family, so he was doing his job. LOL.
Just turn them into oil lamps...

“Oh, besides. Hes the electrician in the family, so he was doing his job. LOL.”
Hahahaha ... nice save.
The US is following in the EU’s footsteps:
EU ban on 75W bulbs comes into force
http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/EU_ban_on_75W_bulbs_comes_into_force?dpl_id=203593
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
Starting today, it is illegal to manufacture or import 75W incandescent light bulbs in the European Union. The phaseout started last year when 100W light bulbs were outlawed. Bulbs of 60W will be phased out next year, and incandescent lighting of all types will be phased out in 2012.
The phase-out of incandescent light bulbs is part of the EU’s strategy to cut greenhouse gases by 20% by 2020. Replacing the old lamps with more efficient models is expected to reduce energy consumption for lighting by 60% in the EU, equivalent to saving 30 million tons of CO2 pollution every year.
You're right when you say they look horrible in those.
YUCKO again!
I've never seen any lightbulb do anything like that to a lampshade.
The bulb of choice is the LED ~ "light emitting diode". They're just now coming into general use. They last for hundreds of thousands of hours.
The Chinese themselves are jumping from "nolightatall" to the LED.
Actually Dimmers CAN run these new bulbs. Only you need a new bulb rated for dimmers. And those cost 3 times what these new bulbs cost.
$10 for ONE bulb?? YIKES!
This is a scam !!
You have to buy a special fluorescent bulb for fans. I didn’t do that, but have installed 5 fans over the last couple of years and what I did was find an LED that fit. Works great too.
Europe’s light-bulb socialism
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/aug/31/europes-light-bulb-socialism/
“Autocrats in Brussels last year declared war on Edison’s greatest invention with a ban on 100-watt lamps. Homes throughout the Old World will continue to dim until incandescent lighting of all types is snuffed out in 2012 - the same year the United States is scheduled to begin a phaseout schedule mirroring the European plan.
....
There is still hope that sanity could return before the U.S. ban on normal light bulbs takes effect. Two years ago, New Zealanders faced an imminent ban. The National Party, at the time in the minority, made overturning the light-bulb scheme a priority in its campaign against the ruling Labor government. The public responded favorably to the party that proclaimed that it “stands for freedom, choice, independence and ambition.” In December 2008, the National Party government overturned the light-bulb ban. Republican challengers seeking an edge over Democrats in November could learn a few things from the Kiwis.”
Add overturning the ban on the lightbulb to the GOP agenda!
We've been using these lamps for a decade or so. The original ones had pretty poor light quality so we used them in places (woodshed, garage) where it didn't matter. They have improved over the years to the point now where we have only one (rarely-used) incandescent lamp in a shaded fixture -- and light is pretty much indistinguishable from incandescent.
"Direct-view" lamps are still incandescent, for obvious reasons.
We like the effect on the power bill.
And in terms of hazard, one broken mercury thermometer is 20 to 30 times the hazard of any of these lamps.

CFLs have a different set of pros & cons than incandescents. And it is true that neither is the sort of thing the federal government ought to be regulating in the manner it does.
But IMO there is no shortage of more pressing issues.
You must have bought some really cheap bulbs. Ours don't buzz, they are almost instant-on, and the one in the garage has been on 24/7 for almost a decade.
