GARY -- Two suspects were taken into custody for a robbery-related shooting Friday at Jack's pawn shop.
Police responded to the pawnbroker business at 1608 Broadway after receiving a call of shots fired about 5 p.m.
The site also is known as Jack's Loan Office.
According to Gary police, a Jack's employee told officers that four males entered the shop and displayed a handgun, demanding money and guns.
A struggle ensued between an employee and one of the would-be robbers with a gun. The employee was able to disarm the person and handcuff him inside the store.
The suspect was apparently disarmed of a plastic toy gun, according to police.
The other robbers ran out of the shop, shooting at employees, said police, who also stated one of the employees shot back and struck one of the robbers.
The suspects fled in a black Oldsmobile. With accomplice help, the person who was shot was dropped off at Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary. He and the person who was handcuffed were taken into police custody, according to the report.
The condition of the person who was shot was not available Saturday nor were the names of the two in custody.
Attempts to reach a representative of the pawn shop were unsuccessful Saturday.
Gary, Indiana, that’s the big leagues for pawn shop hold ups. You are dealing with seasoned professionals there.

I'm surprised the toy gun didn't fool them. With the sound effects and the laser, most people think it's real. [Good thing though. Otherwise, the armed citizen might have shot that thug too instead of just slapping him around and cuffing him.]
If you’re working in a pawn shop in Gary, you should get combat pay.
Every pawnshop around here has armed staff open carrying.
Pawn shop people are usually prepared to take care of business.
Isn’t that the desired outcome? If more thugs understood that pulling this off might just result in death, fewer thugs would try it.
