The United States' top commander in Afghanistan has warned that a planned Koran-burning event in Florida could put US troops in danger.
Gen. David Petraeus added his voice to mounting protests from both the US and abroad over the Dove World Outreach Center's plans to burn Korans on Saturday to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks. His comments ratcheted up the pressure on once-obscure pastor Terry Jones to call off the event.
The controversy comes as some 120,000 US and allied troops are waging a counter-insurgency campaign against the Taliban in Afghanistan, a campaign whose goals include winning support for the US-backed government from the largely Muslim population.
General Petraeus said that burning Korans "is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems not just here, but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community," according to CNN.
""It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan," Gen. David Petraeus said in a statement issued Monday ...
"Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," he said. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."
"Mr. Jones, the pastor of the center in Gainesville, Florida, has touted the activity as "International Burn the Koran Day." Jones also authored a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," which has a Facebook page and Twitter account.

Our forefathers saw this coming, we see the results by ignoring their advice and now we have a Muslim as POTUS.
And said POTUS has its top commander complaining that his troops are in danger, the irony of this is astounding.
Burning the Koran exposes all the lies and weaknesses of Muslims, its like a truth serum and is an absolute tactical advantage, sure it appears childish but when dealing with a anal backward cult it is an act that while considered immature in the modern world is a very good act of defiance against them.
Its called defiance, we defy Islam, plain and simple as that.
We will burn the Koran, we will throw it in a cesspool, we will use its paper to clean excrement, we defy its purpose.
We defy Islam and its symbols of oppression and submission.
Its a lose-lose. To succeed hands a big victory to our enemies.
I agree. Michal Gorbachev won a Nobel Peace Prize for surrendering gracefully which only serves to prove how much of a genius Reagan was.
Brought over from the ATRW thread:Ive been thinking about Petraeuss comments about the church burning the moslem book. I suspect, I cannot know, that Petraeus has been ordered to say something - anything - to try to dissuade that from happening. Who has the authority to order P to do anything? No, not his wife! General P has been ordered to speak against it by Caligula. Caligula is personally outraged by the churchs protest, probably tried to order some authority, police perhaps, FBI to stop it, found out he cant do that and then ordered Petraeus to jump into the fray.
That is the only way General Ps comments make sense to me. General P has made his career out of protecting our first ammendment rights. We dont say, please dont hurt me! I wont do such-and-such. We speak out and we protest. Weve protested the enemies during other wars. The proper response is to hit the enemy harder, not wimpy roll over.
Thats the way I see it.
When they found bibles in Iraq, they took them from the soldier who had them, and they burned them.
I’m sure Gen Petraeus remembers that.
That said, some commander’s insensitivity to Christianity is no reason to violate “2 wrongs don’t make a right.”
However, in the Gainesville Church’s defense, they are little Paul’s doing what Paul oversaw in Acts 19....burning false religious texts.
Or does that rule now only apply to comments Obama doesn't approve of?
It is a shame that we have come to the point that the answer is 'not'.
The Korans are the property of those who intend to burn them. Those who object should offer to buy them. Then the church should acquire more.
I wonder; when (and I mean when) this church is burned down or blown up by muslims, and members are killed, will there be any outrage about the crime? or will the left rally to the defense of Islam? Never mind, I know the answer.
We could solve the whole Afghanistan problem if we just converted all the Muslims there to Christianity.
We're already at war in Afghanistan, or hadn't you noticed?
This is just the excuse of the day. The same people would be here today in the same spot but they would have chosen a different thing to be "offended" about.
War is hell. They started it. They continue it under the name of islam and jihad. We are going to finish it once we get a non-muslim/non-marxist sympathetic administration with sense.
These people will LITERALLY KILL YOU if they have half a chance. Don't appease them in the name of "safety" because that is an illusion of the frightened.
Fight back. We win, they lose. Peace through strength, not servitude and cowardice. It's been that way in the world even longer than islam and Christianity has existed.
Learn from history or die in the same way other civilizations have.
By this statement, the General just guaranteed that everybody and their mother in the Muslim world now knows about this.
He should have kept his mouth shut and let the thing pass and very few people even noticing it.
So don’t burn them. Insert strips of bacon to bookmark some of the most important verses and then pass them around for people to read.
We will not win until we have a war. PC wars cannot be won. We have backed off Islam and backed off Islam......at some point, we will have no room to back off or fight back. There are no moderate muslims.
Who exactly was in a good position to ask him privately? If this could have been accomplished at the time Jones was planning this months ago, it would have been both effective and possibly a win-win.
This is still America. You can burn any book you want to. And, by the way, generals do not have the authority to tell American civilians what to do.
Its reaching beyond a single church now, its viral.
Its being talked about as an acceptable act of defiance against Islam.
It pisses them off and thats the idea, if they were a supposedly peaceful cult they would just laugh it off but no it exposes the tattooed face of Satan on each and every one of them.
