Mayor Bloomberg said today that he defends the pastor of a small Florida church who plans to hold a Koran burning this week -- although he considers the Sept. 11 event “distasteful."
"In a strange way, I'm here to defend his right to do that," Bloomberg said.

Why, burning a Koran isn’t accomplishing anything useful. I certainly don’t want be going around burning Bibles. (Which the U.S. Army apparently does most of). It’s one thing to stand against things like that mosque, but it burning books isn’t going to do anything. Damned unAmerican.
Bruning offensive documents can be therapeutic. I recently burned my DBT papers, some of them, while barbecuing. Felt great and I plan on doing more burnings. I have a lot of DBT papers from my enforced two year tenure.
But he is clever in this one. If he publicly opposed the Koran burning he would open himself up to charges of hypocrisy because of his support for the ground zero mega mosque.
Whether the rest of the progressives will get smart and follow his lead on this remains to be seen. It seems they are being hypocritical and going crazy over the planned Koran burning while saying Iman Rauf and Bloomberg have a right to build their ground zero mega mosque.
The Bloomin’ idiot is wrong about both. Yes, both have a legal right to do what they want to do. But it’s bad judgment to go out of one’s way just to antagonize people. The right thing to do would be build the mosque elsewhere and don’t burn the books.

Although I am in that audience, because I will be burning a Koran on Saturday to express my support, most of the people who now hate Bloomberg couldn’t care less about the Koran burning.
He’s consistent on the “free exercise” issue, he thinks.

I think he’s trying to cover his azz. His support for the Ground Zero Mosque did not go over well with the citizens.
He backed himself into an ideological corner and now he can’t object to Koran burning — even in front of City Hall New York City.
