‘Fugitive Backlog’ of Illegal Aliens More than 500,000, Says Department of Homeland Security

(CNSNews.com) – As of Sunday, Sept. 5, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had a backlog of fugitive illegal aliens of 506,232 people. This is slightly larger than the entire population of the city of Sacramento, California, currently at 486, 189.

The fugitive illegal aliens are individuals who were apprehended by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for being in the United States illegally and then were released ahead of their court proceedings and deemed fugitive when they failed to appear in court.

Brian P. Hale, director of public affairs at ICE, was asked by CNSNews.com about the DHS’s annual report  Immigration Enforcement Actions: 2009, which reports on apprehensions and deportations but does not include data on illegal aliens who are fugitives from the law.

CNSNews.com asked if ICE could provide the number of illegal alien fugitives for FY 2009 and the number to date for 2010.

In an e-mail to CNSNews.com, Hale said the fugitive backlog as of Oct. 1, 2009 (the end of FY 2009) was 534,497. He also said that number had been reduced by 28, 265 since then, making the total fugitive backlog of illegal aliens 506,232 as of Sept. 5, 2010.

Hale said that ICE personnel are spending more time arresting criminal illegal aliens rather than fugitive illegal aliens.

“It is important to note that our fugitive operations teams now can spend up to 30 percent of their time arresting convicted criminals at-large,” Hale said. “Thus, their fugitive arrests don’t reflect all of their work.”

In an earlier story on the number of fugitives that are in the United States illegally from countries other than Mexico, CNSNews.com asked ICE spokeswoman Gillian Brigham to define what DHS considers a fugitive.

Brigham said a “fugitive” is defined as an individual who has been found legally deportable and has evaded authorities.

“A fugitive is an individual who has a final order of removal and has absconded,” Brigham said.

Given the fugitive backlog of 506,232, for comparison the population of the city of Sacramento, Calif., is 466,687, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, while Kansas City, Mo., is 482,299; Albequerque, NM., is 528,497; and Atlanta, Ga., is 540,921.

Catch and release is official malfeasance. The government department responsible for dealing with illegal aliens refuses to do its job. We need to replace the entire upper management with people who take their oaths seriously.

There’ll be 499,999 left if they send a team over to the White Hut to pick up the absconder alien who lives there

I agree, and the sooner Obama and Napolitano are replaced the better off we’ll all be.

If they'd just ship 'em out upon arrest this wouldn't be an issue.

And illegal alien has no due process rights.

Law enforcement officers in sanctuary cities are NOT picking up Mexican felons.
I was listening to my police scanner last weekend and the cops let an ILLEGAL Mexican GO who had warrants out for his arrest IN MEXICO.
Afterall...Barry needs their illegal votes.

That number is a lie. It must be double or triple that. I heard 500,000 fugitive aliens in 2001. All these are subject to immediate deportation just like 0bongo’s Aunt Zietuni the useless welfare leech

The Federal government is unwilling and unable to protect our borders. We have troops in Korea who should be protecting our borders first. The biggest threat to us is from within - from the hordes of illegal aliens roaming across the nation, from Washington which views us at best as a dumping ground for Third World’s excess population, from the politician who are deliberately harming this country.
