WINCHESTER, VA. - The last major GE factory making ordinary incandescent light bulbs in the United States is closing this month, marking a small, sad exit for a product and company that can trace their roots to Thomas Alva Edison's innovations in the 1870s.
The remaining 200 workers at the plant here will lose their jobs.
"Now what're we going to do?" said Toby Savolainen, 49, who like many others worked for decades at the factory, making bulbs now deemed wasteful.
During the recession, political and business leaders have held out the promise that American advances, particularly in green technology, might stem the decades-long decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs. But as the lighting industry shows, even when the government pushes companies toward environmental innovations and Americans come up with them, the manufacture of the next generation technology can still end up overseas.
What made the plant here vulnerable is, in part, a 2007 energy conservation measure passed by Congress that set standards essentially banning ordinary incandescents by 2014. The law will force millions of American households to switch to more efficient bulbs.
The resulting savings in energy and greenhouse-gas emissions are expected to be immense. But the move also had unintended consequences.
Rather than setting off a boom in the U.S. manufacture of replacement lights, the leading replacement lights are compact fluorescents, or CFLs, which are made almost entirely overseas, mostly in China.

Turn out the lights.
The party’s over.
It probably means increased depression, since most people don’t have access to full spectrum lights besides bulbs.
GE are mega wh*res too. MSNBC/CNBC/NBC. They undermine America to curry favor with China and Saudi Arabia.
My youngest DD attends Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester. She is sickened by the news, as should be all Americans. Bob
dont forget who signed it....GWB. another RINO who gave us that and started the whole stimulus crap.
This was nothing but feelgood legislation that accomplished nothing.
Now, the next form of lighting ~ LEDs. US Manufacturers own all the good patents in this technology.
The “replacement lights” GE sells won’t be made in the US, you can take that to the bank.
Yup. GWB believes in GWB (global warming BS).
“a 2007 energy conservation measure passed by Congress that set standards essentially banning ordinary incandescents by 2014.”
A law passed at the behest of GE because they had the patents and investments in China to build the new bulbs.
Freeeeee Trade! China doesn’t play it but its nevertheless Frrreeeeee!
Government electrics is friends with Obama.
They kiss his butt, he promotes green tech that they will profit from.
They close up shop in the USA and sell carbon credits to china.
Move shop to china where labor is cheap and polluting is easy.
The GE bulbs I’ve been seeing are stamped Mexico and don’t seem to last like they used to.
There once was a day that our government protected America and her standard of living.
That's no more.
My daughters live up in the Winchester area, this will hurt the already suppressed local economy.
Yep, Thanx Congress...for all the help.
Oops, I took a compact florescent bulb to my local federal building to ask them how to use it, but I dropped it in the lobby where all the people were returning from lunch. I quickly cleaned up the obvious shards of glass, but there was a whole bunch of powder and other stuff on the floor, and it got tracked all through the building. They had to close the building because the mercury vapor levels were deemed too high. It cost millions to have a remediation company come in and tear up the carpets and epoxy seal the floors.
If only we could get some more government intervetion into the free market to fix the problems caused by government intervention into the free market...
1. Mercury in them will cause a bigger environmental problem than the carbon burned in an incandescent will.
2. They oscillate, which takes its toll on both eyesight and on your head.
3. Far more expensive.
4. Won’t fit into lamps and fixtures that incandescents will.
5. If they last longer, I haven’t been able to bear that out. I’ve labeled the ones I use here and compare them to incandescents - so far they have come out equal in lifespan.
6. Energy savings? I’ve got five flat screen TV’s in the house. The aspect of my power bill spent on lights is minor in comparison to devices with CPUs in them, or with monitors. I don’t have an AC, but in homes that do, the power used by AC’s dwarf that used by lights.
Conclusion: Not backed by science. It’ll create a bigger environmental disaster than the one it seeks to clean up.
Between giant car batteries used by hybrids/prius and these mercury based CFLs, our kids 20 years from now are going to wonder if we put crack in the water supply. Had we actually put the crack in the water supply, it may actually be safer than the chemicals that will leach from the batteries and the lights.
So they’ll make us all buy more expensive bulbs that will take years to pay for themselves. And we’re forced to buy them from overseas.
I’m reminded of one person who many on here hate. His name is Ross Perot. He said “There’s one deficit nobody wants to talk about. And that’s the trade deficit.” Guess they still don’t want to talk about it.
I predict that eventually we will force a repeal of this silly law, but it will be far too late for Americans who made incandescent bulbs for a living.
I went to Shenandoah University also. Great town. Great history.
Too bad for the loss of jobs.
“The law will force millions of American households to switch to more efficient bulbs”.
...not my American household. I’ll be stocking up and you can be sure that regular bulbs will be sold somewhere. There is no way I’ll be forced into using those twisty little idiotic, headache causing bulbs of pain.
And forcing others to buy extra storage bins for all the ones we've stockpiled.
Another Bush gift indeed. Republicans banned DDT, Freon, Nuclear power and light bulbs in hope the leftards will like them. Learn the lesson yet????
No, he doesn't. Who dropped the Kyoto treaty? Who fought the EPA tooth and nail (all the way to the Supreme Court) to keep them from treating CO2 as a pollutant?
Please show me one quote from GWB that in anyway supports man made global warming.
Snip: Also new research has come to light that indicates that CFLs emit a high humming sound that is not in our range of hearing but is in the range of hearing of cats and dogs. Can you image hearing a high pitched humming sound all day long. It would be enough to drive you nuts! Many pet owners report that their cats or dogs do not want to be in rooms with CFL bulbs on and will become anxious if they are forced to be.
And a lot of people either don’t realize or won’t admit that the “you can buy a house if you’re breathing” period started in 2005 when W and the repubs held the power.
I have a couple of the older American made CFLs that I like just fine. The ones coming from China are pure crap and half the time they don’t even work right out of the package.
The LED lights are nice but damn expensive.
Stock up on the 100 watt beauties.
....eventually Congress will pass another law because of the mercury in CFL’s that you’ll have to pay to dispose of them...properly,by law,(taxed).
We The People must DEMAND the light bulb Gestapo in DC be stopped! The new Republican majority in the House and Senate must repeal this insanity.
We must DEMAND that the Republicans get Big Brother out of our light bulbs, out of our health care, out of what cars we buy, out of our plastic bags, and out of our lives and out of our businesses.
Bush railed against what was going on in congress re: fanny and freddie....he just did not continue after a short while and signed the bills necessary to get what he wanted in trade....the real enemies in this was buttwipes like Bawney Fwank and Chuckie ‘putzhead’ Schumer....but Bush was not innocent by any stretch.
And yet, I will bet we never hear the phrase "shipped jobs overseas" in relation to this. Even though "shipping jobs overseas" precisely applies better to this act by Congress than to any corporate layoff.
Pelosi / Reed can own this one.
Just checked my stash of GE Incandescents. They were "Made in China" by "GE Lighting(China)Co. LTD."
Looks like the CFL's may have had nothing to do with the plant shutting down.
Because like the chinese the stuff only has to be 80% of the original.
Stock Tip: Stock up on storage bins for stockpiling.
“Now what’re we going to do?”
I replaced a couple spots (incandescent) with LED spots. The LED light is very blue and the load is completely wrong for the dimmer. LED needs to be controller with a PWM style of dimmer. Incandescent dimmers are based on triacs and a variable oscillator. The LED lamps don't present enough load to operate the dimmer properly.
The LED lights that I added for outside are also a problem. They are attached to motion detectors. The circuitry leaks enough current to maintain a dim glow of the LEDs. When motion is detected, the LEDs illuminate fully. A motion detector style of LED lighting controller should use a relay to fully break the circuit to the LED elements.
Yeah, everytime I read of another plant closure, the three words "Giant sucking sound" (spoken in Perot's Texas twang) always pop into my head.
With our government's long record of being totally unable to foresee the consequences of their actions, there will probably be a significant and very expensive increase in eye problems after a few years of mandatory use of these fluorescent mini bulbs.
Non-existent greenhouse-gas problems now trump existing jobs.
The only thing immense here, is the level of stupidity exhibited.
Good post. You’re right. And id like to add the danger of the the new bulbs. Do these crazies realize the lawsuits that are to pop up because these new bulbs are extremely hazardous to your health when they break. Lawmakers are putting american citizens in harms way to satisfy global warming bullies. There should be class action lawsuits against the gov for putting us in harms way and stealing our f*****g liberties. When is it going to stop.
This has nothing to do with CFL's vs incandescants. It has everything to do with allowing our manufacturing base along with its infrastructure flee our country for cheap labor AND less stringent eco standards imposed on manufacturing.
The Left won’t be satisfied until Americans are all starving, shivering in the cold, and sitting in the dark.
This is an AP story.
I have been stocking up on incandescents. They’re really cheap.
I could go on and on about how stupid the feds are about these CFLs, but I’m still so pissed about having to flush my toilet 12 times instead of one, because of the water conservation ideas from congress, that I can’t think about it.
