Teen embroiled in controversy at Trophy Club school shortly after father's death

Kyler Robertson's father was stabbed to death Sunday afternoon during an argument, a tragedy that the 16-year-old boy has struggled to understand.

On Tuesday, still grieving, Kyler decided he would rather go to Byron Nelson High School and be around his friends than stay home.

When he arrived at the Trophy Club school, his eyes were bloodshot and watery. He was accused of being under the influence of marijuana, according to a Northwest school district document provided to the Star-Telegram. Kyler was suspended for three days and was told that beginning Friday, he would be placed in the district's alternative education program until Jan. 14, 2011.

...

"I asked, 'Do you have any evidence? What is your basis for this?' They said this is just our observation and he smelled like marijuana," she said.

After leaving the campus, Kyler underwent a urine drug screening at his doctor's office within two hours. "Kyler has been evaluated by me and shows no evidence of being under the influence of any illicit drug or alcohol," Keller physician Brandon Atkinson wrote in a statement to the school Tuesday. ....

The boy's mother had contacted the admin office and every teacher to let them know that his father had been killed. So they should have had a pretty good idea of why the kid might have bloodshot and watery eyes.

Public schools are a failure at everything except indoctrinating our children.

Seems to me the ones on drugs are the administrators. I hope the kid’s mom demands urine tests of all the school staff to make things fair!

Too many school “administrators” with not enough to do except to act busy/pretend like they’re accomplishing something/anything.

all the teenagers i know smell like reefer.

does not necessarily mean they smoke, but everyone they hang with usually do.

one downside to modern high quality grass is the reek that non smokers pick up like the smell of a skunk.

rum and scotch causes the same effect for another generation. i know this to be fact.

the school official that thought he smelled like MJ probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the smell of clothes out of a laundry hamper and the smell of mj. something smells weird so it must be reefer.

all the teens i know aint everyone, just the ones i know.

as for the rum reek, i do confess to forcing down a shot or two or three... but only under extreme social pressure.

They said this is just our observation and he smelled like marijuana," she said.

Apparently not enough common sense in that entire school district to give a break to a kid who just lost his father, no matter what they 'suspect'.

in my experience, it generally takes two shots of bacardi silver to reach the point where paying eight bucks a shot for the glenlivet seems reasonable.

i rarely end up drunk, but always broke.

They have to. Zero Tolerance, don't you know? (/s) It's the new American Way.

Can't take a chance that he might, possibly, maybe, could-be under the influence of drugs. According to the "drug warriors", this is the only way we can be sure. Sure and swift, kick his stupid, mourning butt out of school and make him prove he's innocent. How dare he cry hard enough to mimic the side effects of drugs. What sort of nerve does this punk have?

Better to send this kid into a spiraling depression and deprive him of any sense of community and support, than take even the slightest chance that he may be under the influence.

This is the second story today on FR that shows that the WoD is beginning to severely impinge on the rights and freedoms of everyday people. The first was here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2586017/posts

Sheriffs in North Carolina want access to the medical records of everyone who takes pain killers, to check for prescription drug abuse.

Anyone who thought that begging the government to intervene in every corner of life because the government is good and sweet and nice and will stop and only get the bad guys, is an idiot.

This is the War on Drugs. Remember this kid the next time someone calls for yet more restrictive rules, more money, more Zero tolerance, and a more militarized police force, none of which do anything to stop the problem. Remember this boy, abandoned, crying and alone.

Too many stupid people who are all too wiling to screw up a kid’s life forever. Public schools aren’t worth the aggravation on any level. Ditch them. They’ve outlived their usefulness and are downright insidious.

Bingo!

School administrators are the problem in every public school, not the everyday teachers.

Put the words "superintendent" or "principal" in front of someone's name and they automatically forget they ever had an inkling of common sense!

Stop jerking your knees.

This is a tragedy, but it’s likely the fault of just one or two people who made a big and insensitive mistake.

It’s ridiculous to condemn public schools in general because a few individuals messed up.

Kinda like when Free Republic takes brickbats because some posters run their mouths without thinking.

Yeah, even when it happens all the time. So, what's going to happen to these "one or two people" who made this "big and insensitive mistake?"

They keeping their jobs? Any suspensions or cuts in pay?

Hey, I really have no dog in this hunt. I am associated in no way with any school.

That said, I do live near Trophy Club and know the community. It’s a relatively affluent area NE of Fort Worth, full of good people.

I have no idea what happened here, but I do know this: Trophy Club will rally around this family, and the situation will be rectified if none of those involved are firebrands who decide to let it escalate.

No need to tar and feather folks when you don’t know the whole story or the history of this young man’s time at the school.

Just suggesting that we take a deep breath and reserve judgment. This is a community that will see that it is resolved as it should be.
