Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell confirmed to the Pentagon press corps that Defense Secretary Robert Gates called Florida pastor Terry Jones this afternoon to express his “grave concerns” about a planned Koran burning because it could place US military lives at risk.

Morrell said Gates placed a call between 4 and 4:30 p.m. today and engaged the pastor in a “very brief conversation."

"The Secretary expressed his grave concerns to the pastor that going forward with the Koran burning would put the lives of American servicemembers at risk, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan and he urged him not to proceed with the burning," he said.

Our men were killing nazis and tojo in WWII... today we have men killing our enemies... but at the same time the idiots running the civilian side also have them doing the impossible task of nation building. Never has worked... unless you completely destroy the enemy before attempting this act.

I am not in agreement with anyone stopping this Pastor from doing what he had intended to do... and I despise gates and the entire puppet leadership... they are of the weasley clark school of command... but the threat to our guys, forced to operate with both arms tied behind their backs and the enemy allowed anything they wish... is understandable. karzai and his band would more than likely aid our enemies in their evil. One cannot trust any muslim... by their own law... they can lie and even live as a non muslim, if it furthers the cause of islam. We should just nuke them all take any resources that are left... after the glow subsides.

bend over, there’s the answer, tired of that Islamic shaft?
Wake up or perish America..Islam is satanic, islam should not be tolerated as a religion and as a national threat should be kicked out of this country while its still possible, if we as a people don’t have this level of nerve to remove this disease amoung us we are certainly willing to be slaves..

Two-point plan:
1. Don’t antagonize them;
2. Back down & encourage them!

What a joke our sec of defense is, to demean himself by stooping to dealing with such a person.

"...the settlement of the Czechoslovakian problem, which has now been achieved is, in my view, only the prelude to a larger settlement in which all Europe may find peace. This morning I had another talk with the German Chancellor, Herr Hitler, and here is the paper which bears his name upon it as well as mine. Some of you, perhaps, have already heard what it contains but I would just like to read it to you. We regard the agreement signed last night and the Anglo-German Naval Agreement, as symbolic of the desire of our two peoples never to go to war with one another again."

"My good friends, this is the second time in our history that there has come back from Germany to Downing Street peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And now I recommend you to go home and sleep quietly in your beds."

Plenty. There are no front lines and there are shakey Afghan allies to consider. No one has their back when they
are patrolling in villes trying to convince inhabitants not to be afraid of the Taliban.

Noone sitting here safe and sound seems to give a flying f about anyone over there who face danger whilst trying to
accomplish their mission (which is not to nuke everything/everybody FR style).

Chalk one up for Islam. Self-censorship under a threat of violence undermines our 1st amendment rights. The idea that the Secretary of Defense would call a private citizen to persuade him not to exercise his right of free speech is abhorrent. The Secretary of State, the Attorney General, and the WH Press Secretary weighed in before Obama did today.

We can burn bibles, American flags, put Christ in urine at taxpayers expense, but no public official gets involved. The most insidious threat to free expression is self-censorship. When the Danish cartoons resulted in attacks on Danish embassies around the globe, only two US newspapers were brave enough to publish any of the cartoons to show Americans what the fuss was about. And the NYT and WP weren't one of them.

The Supreme Court has found that the executive branch and the states are also bound by the First Amendment.
