Boozed-up ex-Brooklyn cop pleads guilty to mowing down woman, faces only 90 days

The boozed-up NYPD cop who fatally mowed down a Brooklyn woman last year pleaded guilty today and faces 90 days behind bars, authorities said.

Officer Andrew Kelly, assigned to the 68th Precinct in Bay Ridge, was found reeking of alcohol with slurred speech and bloodshot eyes after his Jeep struck 33-year-old Vionique Valnord, the daughter of a minister, as she left a wedding at around 12:41 a.m. in Flatlands on Sept. 28, 2009.

Kelly, 32, faced criminal charges of DWI and vehicular manslaughter after prosecutors charged that he and three buddies -- including another off-duty cop -- were driving home after a beer-fueled evening of watching sports on TV.

He pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter this morning and admitted to a judge that he was "intoxicated" on the night of the accident.

As a result, Kelly faces 90 days in jail for the conviction and five years probation. He will also attend an alcohol treatment program.

Kelly resigned from the NYPD last Friday.

The woman's family told Kelly they forgave him after the plea.

When Judge Alan Marrus asked him if he was guilty, he cleared his throat and said, "Yes, Your Honor."

Lawyer Arthur Aidala said his client did a lot of soul searching before taking the plea. He didn’t want to put his family through a long trial.

Kelly also approached the Valnord family and apologized in the courtroom after the plea.

“He was most relieved when her family forgave him,” said Aidala. “He had tears in his eyes.”

Outside the courthouse, family members said they were comforted by Kelly taking responsibility for Vionique’s death.

“That helps us move forward,” said Varios Valnord, the woman’s father. “I accepted his apology.”

Pros of correct association and government Social Value:
NYPD Cop
Boozed-up; beer-fueled evening of watching sports on TV.
Three buddies — including another off-duty cop
Drunk Driving
Murdered Women (free will, drunk and vehicle)

Cons of No Social Value:
Not member of government prefer group
Daughter of Minister
Leaving a wedding

Now, if she was of the extra-Constitutionally privileged; no tolerance would be accorded.

No, but it IS an obviously deliberate, and extremely clear, message from our betters.

If he were “on duty” at the time his only sanction would have been a reprimand for not tazing the victim.

If he were a citizen instead of a cop, he’d be looking at twenty years.

Three groups with three sets of rules:

The rulers, who are generally above the rules.

The enforcers, who are mostly above the rule.

The subjects, who d@mn well better follow the rules. Or else.

That’s where we’re at. The world has been here before. It gets ugly. ALWAYS.

The statute of limitations has yet to run on suing his ass. Let’s just see how they feel after a few months or so.
