Final Picture of WTC Hero:Dad Finds Tragic Son in New Web Archive
New York Post ^ | September 10, 2010 | TOM TOPOUSIS

Jud Box has spent eight years coping with the death of his firefighter son at the World Trade Center -- but that didn't prepare him for what he saw posted to a new online archive of photos and videos about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Scrolling through the archive, Box came face to face with his son, Gary Box, a firefighter with Brooklyn's Squad 1, who was captured by a digital camera lugging his gear through a traffic-clogged Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel on his way to Ground Zero. It's the last known photo of Gary Box, then 35, who died an hour later in the toppling towers. His remains were never recovered. "I walked out of the room and fell on the floor," the elder Box said of discovering the photo in the online archive being assembled by the World Trade Center Memorial Museum, which has collected 3,000 images and videos in just two months.

"It was a shock emotionally, yet a blessing to find this photo," says Box, 66, now of Weirsdale, Fla. His voice quaking with emotion from recounting his discovery of the photo, Box said he can no longer bring himself to look at it.

"It's like looking at a walking dead man. You know what happened to him within 45 minutes," he said.

The Web site, called Make History Happen, was launched around Sept. 11 of this year as a way to collect images related to the World Trade Center.

Truer words were never spoken. From your lips to God’s ears. May they rest in peace.

“These men understood the risk they were taking.”

The thing people don’t consider is that those men, the first responders of the PD’s and FD’s across the country face the potential of that risk every single day they go to work. Their wives never know in kissing them goodbye if it’ll be the last time.

In the case of 9/11, what has been especially difficult for families has been (in too many cases) there was no body found, no way to say the goodbye we are used to at funerals and wakes. I don’t know that there’s ever ‘closure’ with a body to bury, but there is absolutely none without.

It all still rips out my heart these nine years out.

Predictions:

  1. That mosque will not be approved

  2. If approved, that mosque will not be built.

  3. If built, that mosque will never stand

One of my friends lost his brother (a firefighter) at the Trade Center. He spent about a year assisting in the clean up and hoping to find his remains. As retired firefighter and a gold miner, he had a knack for finding remains that others overlooked. He ended up with cancer of the throat from the exposure.

Saturday, on the edge of the wilderness where he lives, my friend and his wife will hold a small ceremony at the flag pole in front of the local firehouse. May every American fly a flag on that day in remembrance of those lost.

I often take the red line that runs nearly underneath Ground Zero. The subway cars still screech and vibrate intensely as they maneuver past the zone where thousands were murdered, and where so many heroes died. The pass never fails to invoke emotions that I prefer not to describe.

My heart goes out to Mr Box.

"It's like looking at a walking dead man. You know what happened to him within 45 minutes," he said.

I see courage and conviction in that face.

He was more than a dead man walking.

He was a hero charging into hell for others.

Should have been Ron Paul’s last picture.

Sad that an American died instead.

I remember hearing of one of the children of the 9-11 victims, who was four at the time:

"When Daddy finishes dying, he's going to come home and see us."

Further words on this would get me banned.

Oh, that poor man, but I have this feeling that his son wanted him to see this, that the good Lord led him so the father could have that connection with his son again. I’m very touched. Excuse me while I dry my eyes.

“...I’ve always wondered how many of them knew in their gut “This is it”, but charged up the stairwells anyway. Big brass ones, all of them...”

One of the surviving fireman tells of arriving on the scene. One fireman says “We might not make it out today”. They shook hands all around, wished each other good luck, then went into the towers...

Hey, here’s a thought - the Moslems murdered three thousand human beings before razing the WTC; let’s build a mosque on the spot...

Thanks, friend.

I’ll be in DC this weekend for Sunday’s rally and march.

But would you do me a favor?

Remember my friend, Richard Bruce Van Hine, Truck 41, NYFD.

Just finished his shift when the call came in on 9/11/01.

He never made it home to his wife and two daughters.

Instead, he put on his gear, jumped on the truck and went into eternal life with his Lord when the Towers fell.

They didn’t find him until they removed that huge ramp leading into the excavated area a few years later. He was under there the whole time.

I also knew 2 wonderful people on Flight 83, Don and Jeanne Peterson. They also met their Lord that day. All that was found of them was Don’s well marked Bible, which was returned to his son. This was the Bible he used in counseling many alcoholic and drug addicted men at America’s Keswick in NJ.

I can barely type this, Race, so you remember them there for me,OK?

He will. He will look later on and be proud. He’ll remember the good times as his son became a man. He’ll be very, very proud of his hero.
