VDH: Enough Already with Reverend Jones
The Corner ^

Posted on 09/10/2010 10:06:34 AM PDT by Retired Greyhound

By Victor Davis Hanson

Everyone is trying to outdo one another in righteous condemnation of the Reverend Terry Jones and his micro-flock, to assure the world that 50 people out of 300 million does not a majority make. That is altogether fine and good, and yet we all know the asymmetry involved — whether it is a scholarly remark made by a pope and the Muslim riots in response, or the policies of many Arab countries forbidding open worship by other religions and, in some cases, the presence of non-Muslims in entire cities.

But all that said, our political and military leaders — whether a general, a secretary of defense, or a president — are making a grave mistake by commenting directly on this pathetic figure. If a gesture is needed by our leaders, a simple “The United States ensures freedom of speech, even disturbing expressions of it, and has always paid the subsequent price for ill-manners” would have been enough.

We are at war with radical Islam, from the battlefield in Afghanistan to stealthy terrorists here at home, and we are struggling to win the hearts and minds of Muslim populations in general. But we can’t offer 24/7 exegeses of 300 million Americans’ free speech. No such we-must-be-perfect-to-be-good burden was thought to accompany past wars, even though zealots at home often misinterpreted our efforts against Japanese militarism, German Nazism, or Communism, and despite the fact that our silence sometimes aided and abetted our enemies, both directly and indirectly.

We are reaching the point where the damage done to America’s image by 50 book-burners is outweighed by the damage done by hypersensitivity on the part of the United States government, which hopes to assuage the hurt feelings of those abroad who equate that tiny number with our culture at large — often in an abjectly hypocritical fashion. We know where this leads — to endless efforts to micromanage all elements of American life to protect the sensitivities of those who, by act and deed, are far more intolerant of different religions and cultures.

Already we’ve seen the omnipresent Imam Rauf suggest that, if he were not to get his selfish way, then nebulous, omnipotent radical forces abroad would be upset, and consequences for our troops would follow. His time would be far better spent either lecturing Saudi financiers to stop funding hate-filled madrassas and mosques or, even better, galvanizing world opinion over the carnage in Chechnya, where Russians used a level of violence against Muslims in Grozny that we have not seen since Mr. Assad leveled Hama.

If our leaders don’t relax, cool it, and stop these weird presidential “teachable moments” and all this stooping to editorialize about local irrelevancies (cf. the beer summit, the Tony Robbins–like escapades of the ubiqutious Imam Rauf, the line about Arizona law enforcement supposedly deporting the innocent “out to get ice cream,” etc.), we will devolve to the level of psychodrama. Indeed, this brilliantly entrepreneurial book-burning pastor has taken our government down to that level as it is. What’s next? Heaven forbid a gang-banger in East L.A. and his 50-person tribe should start sporting anti-Islamic insignia on their chests. Or Mr. Rushdie should quite rudely publish a sequel to The Satanic Verses. Two more inappropriate Danish cartoons? Is the Cabinet going to start devoting 3-4 hours a week to apologetic commentary directed at the Islamic world for the rude and uncouth among us?

Radical Islamists surely hope so.

I agree with Hanson here.

Our 1A rights must be defended at all costs, even when the practice of 1A is tasteless and offensive.

Why haven't Obama, the msm and the left lectured Muslims about how a small minoritiy of Christians don't represent all Christians, just like they always lecture us about Islam?

SUMMARY OF SHARIA LAW:

Imam Feisal Abdel Rauf claims that the U.S. constitution is Sharia compliant. Now let us examine below a few laws of Sharia to see how truthful Imam Rauf is:

1- Jihad, defined as “to war against non-Muslims to establish the religion,” is the duty of every Muslim and Muslim head of state (Caliph). Muslim Caliphs who refuse jihad are in violation of Sharia and unfit to rule.
2- A Caliph can hold office through seizure of power meaning through force.
3- A Caliph is exempt from being charged with serious crimes such as murder, adultery, robbery, theft, drinking and in some cases of rape.
4- A percentage of Zakat (charity money) must go towards jihad.
5- It is obligatory to obey the commands of the Caliph, even if he is unjust.
6- A caliph must be a Muslim, a non-slave and a male.
7- The Muslim public must remove the Caliph if he rejects Islam.
8- A Muslim who leaves Islam must be killed immediately.
9- A Muslim will be forgiven for murder of: 1) an apostate 2) an adulterer 3) a highway robber. Vigilante street justice and honor killing is acceptable.
10- A Muslim will not get the death penalty if he kills a non-Muslim, but will get it for killing a Muslim.

11- Sharia never abolished slavery, sexual slavery and highly regulates it. A master will not be punished for killing his slave.
12- Sharia dictates death by stoning, beheading, amputation of limbs, flogging even for crimes of sin such as adultery.
13- Non-Muslims are not equal to Muslims under the law. They must comply to Islamic law if they are to remain safe. They are forbidden to marry Muslim women, publicly display wine or pork, recite their scriptures or openly celebrate their religious holidays or funerals. They are forbidden from building new churches or building them higher than mosques. They may not enter a mosque without permission. A non-Muslim is no longer protected if he leads a Muslim away from Islam.
14- It is a crime for a non-Muslim to sell weapons to someone who will use them against Muslims. Non-Muslims cannot curse a Muslim, say anything derogatory about Allah, the Prophet, or Islam, or expose the weak points of Muslims. But Muslims can curse non-Muslims.
15- A non-Muslim cannot inherit from a Muslim.
16- Banks must be Sharia compliant and interest is not allowed.
17- No testimony in court is acceptable from people of low-level jobs, such as street sweepers or bathhouse attendants. Women in low level jobs such as professional funeral mourners cannot keep custody of their children in case of divorce.
18- A non-Muslim cannot rule — even over a non-Muslim minority.
19- Homosexuality is punishable by death.
20- There is no age limit for marriage of girls. The marriage contract can take place anytime after birth and can be consummated at age 8 or 9.
21- Rebelliousness on the part of the wife nullifies the husband’s obligation to support her, gives him permission to beat her and keep her from leaving the home.
22- Divorce is only in the hands of the husband and is as easy as saying: “I divorce you” and becomes effective even if the husband did not intend it.
23- There is no community property between husband and wife and the husband’s property does not automatically go to the wife after his death.
24- A woman inherits half what a man inherits.
25- A man has the right to have up to 4 wives and none of them have a right to divorce him — even if he is polygamous.
26- The dowry is given in exchange for the woman’s sexual organs.
27- A man is allowed to have sex with slave women and women captured in battle, and if the enslaved woman is married her marriage is annulled.
28- The testimony of a woman in court is half the value of a man.
29- A woman loses custody if she remarries.
30- To prove rape, a woman must have 4 male witnesses.
31- A rapist may only be required to pay the bride-money (dowry) without marrying the rape victim.
32- A Muslim woman must cover every inch of her body, which is considered “Awrah,” a sexual organ. Not all Sharia schools allow the face of a woman exposed.
33- A Muslim man is forgiven if he kills his wife at the time he caught her in the act of adultery. However, the opposite is not true for women, since the man “could be married to the woman he was caught with.”
34-It is obligatory for a Muslim to lie if the purpose is obligatory. That means that for the sake of abiding with Islam’s commandments, such as jihad, a Muslim is obliged to lie and should not have any feelings of guilt or shame associated with this kind of lying.

Hey, I’m Christian and I don’t care if korans are burned. They mean nothing to me except they’re satanic.

What they should be saying to muslims is that this is America and this pastor, even if they don’t agree with him, has a right here to express himself and to protest. That they will not bend to world pressure. Americans are a free people. And if they don’t like that they can lump it. I wish. I wish. Alas, we have no one with the cojones to do that.

Terrorist Attacks
(within the United States or against Americans abroad)
The following timeline lists terrorist attacks against the United States and Americans living either in the U.S. or abroad.

1920
Sept. 16, New York City: TNT bomb planted in unattended horse-drawn wagon exploded on Wall Street opposite House of Morgan, killing 35 people and injuring hundreds more. Bolshevist or anarchist terrorists believed responsible, but crime never solved.

... who lit up the korans back then?

“...we are struggling to win the hearts and minds of Muslim populations in general..”

I guess that worked over the past 1300 years. You win their hearts and minds by surrender. VDH is good but this is nonsnese.

VDH is smart but he skirts that issue that one of their own is in the white hut, infiltration throughout the govt now, and Saudi investments in 5 out of 6 of our TV news networks.

Thus is the gravitas of our WH that they seem attracted to sideshows and circuses like a moth to a light. Sometimes its much better to let the trivial play itself out rather than shine a light on it. Methinks the “narrative sensitive handlers” in the WH would understand this. The WH responds to trivial issues only because it is not substantive on real issues.

Reverend Jones is in the news right now because he fits the liberal media template. He fits the bill of what the liberal elites think of as mainstream Christianity.

The liberal media recently all but ignored two major stories. There were random attacks at the Iowa State Fair by minority youth gangs upon people at the fair. Evidence indicates that these black gangs were targeting white victims.

And there was a major brawl on the Washington DC Metro subway recently, involving at least 70 youth gang members. This story was also virtually ignored by the MSM.

I’m sure the reason that the brawling of youth gangs was under-reported was due to liberal bias. The media did not want to report what happened or who was involved, because they choose not to report anything which reflects badly on certain people or groups.

But in the case of this Pastor Jones, they want to report on a story which makes an allegedly good Christian pastor look bad.

And just today, I hear someone discovered that this Pastor Jones went to Rush Limbaugh’s high school. I expect that to show up in liberal talking points, to tie this pastor to Rush.

I agree. The ongoing video of a pig mauling a koran in his pigpen is much more entertaining.

“Our 1A rights must be defended at all costs, even when the practice of 1A is tasteless and offensive. “

If we look to our leader, both left and right, then all is lost and we will eventually become the slaves of Islam. Our leaders are cowards - and I include Palin and Beck.

This war can now only be won by heroes that may rise up from the population.

Hanson is a smart guy - does he really think the USA can "win" the hearts and minds of Muslim populations? NO WAY!! They hate each other as much or more than they hate the USA.

If over a billion muslims were serious about waging war against the west, we’d know about it. They’re not. Fundamental Islam can’t even take over in countries like Egypt, Jordan, Iraq where virtually all the people are muslims. Even the Iranians don’t want fundamental Islam anymore.

Islam is messed up religion, but there is no chance that sharia will ever be the law of the US.

What do you expect from a pop culture president? It’s stuff like “Lindsay Lohan is in rehab again” or “Brit Spears stole her girl fiend’s girlfriend.” Trashy sensationalism meant to seem important. In the worse sense it is talking down to the people, assuming they only know TV soap operas. And yet, in another way, it is trying to reconnect for election time.
