Combat climate change with less gassy diet for cows: study
AFP on Yahoo ^ | 9/10/10 | AFP

NAIROBI (AFP) – Climate change can be curbed by changing the diet of livestock, whose feed crops, farting, belching and manure contribute a fifth of the planet's greenhouse gas emissions, a new study said Friday.

The study by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) said livestock risk growing as global demand for meat and milk surges and recommended simple steps to curb livestock-related greenhouse gas emissions.

It recommended using more nutritious pasture grasses, supplementing diets with crop residues, restoring degraded grazing lands and adopting more productive breeds, among other simple measures for tropical countries.

...

The scientists said the burden of changing livestock production practices would largely be on half a billion of the poorer farmers in tropical countries.

"It would be a useful incentive if these farmers were allowed to sell the reductions they achieve as credits on global carbon markets," Thornton said.

He estimated that at 20 dollars per ton -- the current rate of carbon on the European Climate Exchange -- poor livestock keepers in tropical countries could generate about 1.3 billion dollars each year in carbon revenues.

Natural grass .. It's a gas gas gas..

Cows graze on a meadow in the Alps mountains near the village Oberau, southern Germany in August 2010. Climate change can be curbed by changing the diet of livestock, whose feed crops, farting, belching and manure contribute a fifth of the planet's greenhouse gas emissions, a new study said Friday. I don't need to combat “climate change” because I index my levels to the Al Gore standard. In fact, to even begin to catch up to him I'd need to burn down a significant sized forest.

I just don’t want to live in a world where a cow can’t just fart as much as they want. Surely they enjoy the same smug sense of artistic expression that I do. Would you deprive them of that? Look at their eyes! How could you?

The whole idea is nonsense. The cow is going to take in a certain amount of carbon and expel a certain amount of carbon. If it doesn’t come out in the form of gas it will come out in some other form that will promptly decay and turn to gas. I’ll retire to Bedlam.

People who don’t work in agriculture, and didn’t invest a dime of their own money in it, want to be in charge of it. People who don’t raise cows are sure they have a lot of really good advice to offer the people who do raise cows.

These are the kind of people who elect an Obama into high office. Never built anything, never accomplished anything, but he’s pretty sure he knows better than you do how it all works.

Doesn't matter what the cows do.

Man-made climate change is a hoax anyway.

What we REALLY have to worry about is GITC.

Al “Tommy Flanagan” Gore discovered that Gnome Induced Temperature Change when he was working on his important research into the fact that it's “several million degrees” 2km beneath the surface of the Earth (This is MUCH hotter than the surface of the Sun).

The only way to cure GITC is to send al Gore billions or preferably Trillions of dollars. Beg your Congresspeople to enact legislation that would put guns to the heads of any “gnome deniers.”

Won't you do it for the children?

A fifth of WHAT exactly,

seeing as how WATER VAPOR makes up 95% of the “greenhouse gases” in our atmosphere, followed by CO2 at 3.6%, followed by nitrous oxide at .95%, and finally methane at .36%....

The reason for bringing up cows...

Need some way to cut methane, without half of the world’s population being cut off from the rice they need.

Methane is a gas, as a bottled or piped gas, it’s portable, industrial energy. Sigh, once again environmentalists fall behind the curve. Collect methane in bottles and compress it. Bottled methane = Bottled Energy
