Combat climate change with less gassy diet for cows: study

NAIROBI (AFP) – Climate change can be curbed by changing the diet of livestock, whose feed crops, farting, belching and manure contribute a fifth of the planet's greenhouse gas emissions, a new study said Friday.

The study by the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) said livestock risk growing as global demand for meat and milk surges and recommended simple steps to curb livestock-related greenhouse gas emissions.

It recommended using more nutritious pasture grasses, supplementing diets with crop residues, restoring degraded grazing lands and adopting more productive breeds, among other simple measures for tropical countries.

...

The scientists said the burden of changing livestock production practices would largely be on half a billion of the poorer farmers in tropical countries.

"It would be a useful incentive if these farmers were allowed to sell the reductions they achieve as credits on global carbon markets," Thornton said.

He estimated that at 20 dollars per ton -- the current rate of carbon on the European Climate Exchange -- poor livestock keepers in tropical countries could generate about 1.3 billion dollars each year in carbon revenues.

Those were percentages of “greenhouse” gases only. They excluded the other gases.

The reason for bringing up cows...

Need some way to cut methane, without half of the world’s population being cut off from the rice they need.

Methane is a gas, as a bottled or piped gas, it’s portable, industrial energy. Sigh, once again environmentalists fall behind the curve. Collect methane in bottles and compress it. Bottled methane = Bottled Energy

$0.4 billion in taxes and fees; $0.3 biillion in payoffs and bribes; $.5 billion to middlemen, marketers, and trade groups; $.2 billion in increased costs, loss of marketable manure, etc; net to the poor farmers -$0.1 billion

With those gas collecting balloons attached to the cattle, one certainly would not want to be near them in a lightning storm.

And what if AQ rustlers stole a herd, and used tham as surogate suicide bombers?LOL

A little later this week I need to moove the pickup & trailer down to the local feed lot, and moove part of their compost pile back here, so I can moove it to where it needs to be tilled in.
