Castro convertible: Long-time Cuban dictator finally admits Communism doesn't work
NY Daily News ^ | September 10th 2010 | Masthead Editorial

Posted on 09/10/2010 12:54:35 PM PDT by neverdem

What next? A razor with lubricating strips and a clean-shaven look?

At age 84, after a half century of promoting world revolution, Fidel Castro is taking a fresh approach to life.

Asked by Jeffrey Goldberg, a national correspondent for The Atlantic magazine, whether Cuba's economic system was still worth exporting to other countries, Castro replied: "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore."

He also expressed regret for advising Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev to launch a nuclear attack on the U.S. during the Cuban missile crisis. And he called on buddy Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, president of Iran, to stop denying the Holocaust.

Castro said Ahmadinejad ought to understand that the Jewish view of Israel as a nonnegotiable safe haven has a lot to do with a 2,000-year history of being reviled, persecuted and subjected to mass murder. True enough. Live and learn.

Isn’t it interesting that Castro figured this out but socialists here in the States can’t figure it out?

Just as the rest of the world is waking up to the total failure that is socialism/communism the American left has succeeded in bringing the fail here.

Heck even Castro admits it's a failure, meanwhile the American left thinks some how they can make it work THIS TIME, if only more money is given to people who refuse to work!

I think Rush has it right: Castro has known for decades that Communism doesn’t work (except for those in power), and he (like Obama) doesn’t care. He just wants the embargo lifted, and knows the liberals will all be in a flutter over his statement.

All of the libs are jumping up, waving their hands, putting their fingers to their pursed lips, telling him to keep it down.

It hasn’t worked because the “right people” weren’t in charge.

Wouldn’t it be great if they suddenly began revolting.

But Cuban Communism did put a lot of classic cars in a time capsule that car restorers are dying to get their hands on. If they live long enough that is.

We need to send a gaggle of liberal economic professors down to Cuba to explain how it will work when done by the right people.

They just need a stimulus bill...but not a wimpy one like we did...a Paul Krugman threat level red super-stimulus infrastructure porkapalooza bill.

Not to worry Fidel...help is on the way!!!

Communism doesn't work? How long did it take Fidel to reach this conclusion? Some of us knew it as soon as communism was explained to us.

Fidel is slow--and dim.

Many people are.

“Isn’t it interesting that Castro figured this out but socialists here in the States can’t figure it out?”

The majority of socialists I’ve known were academics. Either that, or laborers. (I just don’t happen to know a lot of laborers.) Those are the ends of the spectrum where you find ardent socialists. Academics envision a glorious world without toil or trouble “if only everybody would (fill-in-the-blank.)” Academics live in a cloistered, rich world and they envision everybody else doing the farming and butchering and puttering greenly about in horse-drawn carts with themselves still in their glowing world above it all; because, I suppose, socialists just love university professors. (Obviously, they haven’t read any history, as teachers were always on the earliest hit-lists.)

Laborers are easier to understand. They too are not overly encumbered with historical perspective. They just know that they work harder than the guys shooting around in air-conditioned BMW’s and that some of that wealth, if not all of it, should go to them.

What bothers me most is the large number of Jewish professionals I’ve known who support Democrats when it is the Democrats who loath Israel. I put down to having to survive in the academic environment. In the universities, if you support Israel then you must be a conservative as everybody knows the Democrats support the peace-loving Hamas and Hezbollah. I don’t know how they can double-think those positions, but I’ve attended enough university gatherings to have witnessed it first hand dozens of times. They’d say in the same breath, “Republicans are beasts; but Bush has been good to Israel.”

Damn, that Castro is one real sharp knife. I wonder whether being one of only two countries practicing communism may have been a clue? When your only political ally is North Korea, it might be time to reconsider your core beliefs. What a complete boob. And Hollyweirders think this guy is intelligent and progressive. Funny.

You should have traveled to Burma when it opened in the early 1980s if you like antique Brit cars.

the real “presidential” race in DC is between We the People and the present thugocracy trying to establish a similar dominance over Americans for the next two generations.

Castro has stated he was misunderstood and that
communism works just fine for Cuba.

Seems Castro has changed his mind?

I think the world just shifted a little.
It feels like the earth is only spinning at a 22 degree angle to the sun instead of 23 degrees.
Somebody needs to verify. I feel a little dizzy.

The Jewish people in the States worry more about their pocket books than they do about Israel. As for laborers, you are right on. They want what other people have but expect the unions to get it for them.

The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore."

It was never about actually helping the Cuban people. It was about gaining and holding power. Now that he is near death, that doesn't matter as much anymore.

I wonder what those Hollywood types who proclaimed their admiration of the Cuban system are now saying. Most likely they’ll blame Bush because he kept JFK’s embargo in place and he’s responsible for the ruin of that country.
