End of Ramadan Celebrations Canceled, Downgraded

Muslims Tone Down Eid, a Holiday Falling on Anniversary of 9/11 Terrorist Attacks

More than 8,000 people poured through the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Md., this morning in shifts for prayer and worship in celebration of Eid ul-Fitr – a celebration marking the end of a month of Ramadan fasting.

Clothed in colorful, embroidered robes, families from Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland cheerfully greeted each other, and later, in unison chanted songs of thanksgiving to Allah.

Joyful as they were, Muslims across the country consciously made this Eid celebration somewhat somber to show respect. The date of the holiday, which is determined by the lunar calendar, coincides with the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

"Brothers and sisters, now is your opportunity to show our brothers and sisters who are not Muslims, who we really are," said Mohamed Shmohamed, Imam of the Muslim Center in Silver Spring in his Eid sermon. "And the best way we can show them is through our manners, proper etiquette, and how we behave."

Quite and odd coincidence. I think the end of Ramadan is one of the biggest muslim holidays.

I think this is the first time the Muslims have shown restraint and feelings for others. Can ABC be trusted?

If they really mean to show respect, good for them.

If they’re falling for the “Muslims are in grave danger of being harassed by those dirty tea partiers—never mind the lack of evidence” propaganda, shame on them.

Muslims see push back and it is deterring them.

That is the only thing Islam understands and respects.

I can’t get over how they can believe they are doing Allah’s will in trying to force the world to submit to Islam; for goodness sakes, don’t they understand if that is what God wished, he could make it so in the blink of an eye?

NEITHER ABC or the Muslims can be trusted.

Nothing the Muslim leaders in this country do can be construed as "well-meaning".

Toning down the end-of-Ramadan celebrations is NOT out of respect to Americans or their feelings, but only a calculated concerted move on their part and in their own self-interest after weighing all the pros and cons of whooping it up today.

Yes, it is nothing more than butt-covering. They smell our determination and anger.

Islam and its followers will someday be wiped off the face of the earth. I hope it’s soon.

Whether they state it publicly or not, I think the main reason they’re keeping a low profile is because they sense the tide is starting to turn against them. Time to APPEAR to be “peaceful” for awhile.

I agree. This is not a genuine act of respect but rather a show off.

There's violence in Kashmir. See the India Times. Hopefully calmed down since it's kind of late (10:30pm as I write this).
