McConnell Fears Overconfidence
Congressional Quarterly ^ | September 12, 2010 | John Stanton and Jackie Kucinich

Posted on 09/12/2010 10:28:43 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday cautioned Republicans against appearing to take for granted that they will make significant electoral gains in November, saying Democrats still have cards to play and voters rarely reward overconfidence.

In an interview Friday, the Kentucky Republican warned that the “American people have not finally spoken yet. And I don’t think they like any measuring of the drapes.”

“I think the time to spike the ball in the end zone is when you’ve scored” and not before, McConnell said, although he readily acknowledged Republicans are well-positioned this year.

“Having said that, we’ve got a really good atmosphere in this election. We’ve got competitive candidates everywhere there is now a Democratic Senator,” McConnell said, listing California, Indiana, Washington, Illinois, Colorado, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Delaware and even West Virginia and Connecticut as being in play.

Nevertheless, McConnell said that even with those favorable conditions, “my own view is, ‘Don’t promise things you can’t deliver.’ And we need, as I said, not to appear to be measuring the drapes. ... There is much that can run off the tracks” before Election Day.

This is so true. A lot can happen over the next two months.

My sense is that the most dangerous scenario is that the economic data will improve significantly in October due to the expectation that the Dems are going to lose big and that some people will get the mistaken message that the improvement is due to the Dem legislation rather than the elation of dumping the Dems.

No one is being overconfident, we just know the mood of the American People is to throw the bums out.

Mitch is upset since many of those 'bum's' already thrown out have been his buddies.

McConnell needs to realize that WE know that
Soros is BUYING Secretaries of State.....
Soros is buying judges...
In buying Secretaries of State, Soros has had more to do with the military vote being DENIED.....
Soros PLACED Obama in the pResidency...

Let’s hope someone can EDUCATE McConnell....I think he is unaware of the basics. I don’t appreciate “warnings” from him....HE should heed warnings from US.

If he and the republicans don’t realize that THEY are at risk in this election and future elections, he can say “buh-bye” to republican power in the future....the PEOPLE will clean house of ALL the vermin.

Don’t get cocky, McConnell.....YOU’RE under suspicion, as well.

The economy may tick up in Oct, but the deep anger in the nation is not going to be assuaged by it, they know the Nation is in deep trouble with Obama having total control.

This is going to be a national election, not a local one.

The expectations of the election are a hope. The looming effects of Obamacare are a reality. I’m not looking for any improvement in the economy. Considering the declining trend in GDP, we may be looking at the double dip.

Yeah that and he's afraid he might actually have to do something if the Conservatives come in. A lot of these rinos would probably rather have the dems win in November so they can use that as an excuse for getting nothing done; if the conservatives come in, well the pressure will be on to start working toward unraveling this crap. imo

I think McConnell is afraid of us TEA Partiers...and hopes we can’t win.

I, also, think he might feel a bit threatened. Three of his four favs are outta there...Gregg, with his retirement...Bennett and Murkowski with their losses in the primaries.

Poor Mitch...all he has left is that woman from Texas.

Amen! I think they are more scared of winning than the Democrats are of losing!

Yes, I agree. That's the only possible way the economy can improve.

I was listening to US radio over the internet last night and I heard a news item where the chief economist was predicting doom and gloom for the economy for some time to come. That's a wake up call. Either Obama is throwing congress under the bus, so he can start blaming things on Republicans again, or they have some cooked figures they're going to bring out late next month.

I would bet he is trying to sandbag the teaparty candidates with this statement. The teaparty candidates have already knocked off several of McConnels committee members.
