WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama celebrated the opening of an advanced battery plant in Michigan on Monday as a critical boost for hybrid and electric cars — and a success for his administration's economic stimulus program.
But even as mass-produced advanced batteries start rolling off assembly lines, costs are high for consumers, and hurdles remain.
"This is about the birth of an entire new industry in America, an industry that's going to be central to the next generation of cars," Obama said Monday in a phone call broadcast at the opening of A123 Systems Inc.'s lithium ion battery plant in Livonia, Mich.
"And it's going to allow us to start exporting those cars, making them comfortable, convenient, and affordable. .... When folks lift up their hoods on the cars of the future, I want them to see engines and batteries that are stamped: 'Made in America,'" Obama said, according to a transcript of the call released by the White House.

Capital is looking for good investments.
If this company had a good product or a potential product, it would have been privately funded.
This should get out the Jetsons vote.
The cost is about $300,000.00 per job.

Soon we’ll have $5,000 cars with $15,000 batteries. Kind of like a $30 printer with $50 cartredges, only on a much larger scale.

Costs are high. The government has estimated that a battery with a 100-mile range costs about $33,000, although stimulus money could bring that down to $10,000 by the end of 2015.
YIKES!
So he’s going to use tax dollars to produce these batteries. Then when too many batteries are laying around, he’ll use more tax dollars to create demand for all those batteries.
They are going to have to drive up the current fuel costs.....

A high-tech Michigan state tax credit valued at $25.2 million over 15 years and a battery cell state tax credit valued at $100 million over four years have been approved.
The A123Systems Ann Arbor site is known as the Advanced Research & Government Solutions Group of A123Systems. A123Systems is one of the state’s six Centers of Energy Excellence and has entered into a development and manufacturing agreement with Chrysler LLC to provide battery systems for the company’s ENVI product line.
In August 2009, A123 was awarded a $249 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Electric Drive Vehicle Battery and Component Manufacturing Initiative. Under the terms of this grant, A123 will be required to match the funds over time as they are used.
This grant is an important part of A123’s U.S. manufacturing strategy, which also includes an application for a loan from the Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) program. The grant will be used to help implement A123’s strategy for the construction of world-class lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities in the United States, with the first construction location in Livonia, Michigan. In addition, Detroit Edison and A123 Systems will use $5 million from the U.S. Energy Department to see if electric car batteries can be bundled together to store emergency supplies of power for the electric grid.
“A123 will play a key role in Michigan’s transformation into a high-tech economic powerhouse,” said Michigan Congressman John Dingell.

Isn’t it South Korea that actually owns this plant?
at 33,000 a whack with no cars being built they are making a bulge in the pipeline. We will never have electric cars, They don’t have them any where else in the world. With gas p[pelines in danger of being shut down and King Coal dead, what would we plug them into if we had them?
