Author Sees Angels, and Her Book's a Bestseller
Fox News ^ | June 25, 2010 | Lauren Green

They are messengers from God, heavenly beings without material bodies, spiritual envoys carrying out God's will.

They are angels. And according to Lorna Byrne, everyone has one -- a guardian angel who’s always with you and will never leave you. She says they are “the gatekeepers of your soul.”

She knows this, she says, because all her life she's been surrounded by them and has talked to them. Her book, Angels in My Hair, recounts her lifelong experiences with angels directing her and teaching her.

Byrne's story begins with the telling of her toddler years, when the angels told her that her tiny playmate was the brother who had died before she was born.

"We actually touched while playing blocks," says the Irish-born Byrne, who is a practicing Catholic. "When I touched his, arm it sparkled, my hands went through his into mine. I was two and a half."

Whether the public believes Byrne's angel accounts is up to them. But the popularity of her book illustrates the fascination people have with these mystical beings. Her tome is an international bestseller, translated into 20 languages. Doubleday reportedly paid a six-figure advance for the U.S. publishing rights.

As you point out, not all angels are good angels. She should take care.

A great book on the human capacity to hear the voices of gods (small "g"...angels, fallen or not) is The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind.

My question for this woman is not whether or not she is experiencing auditory hallucinations, but what is causing them and are her voices sentient.

From Jaynes Bicameral Mind...

It has recently [this was back in 1990 in the afterward to Bicameral Mind] been discovered that congenital quadriplegics who have never in their lives spoken or moved, and are oftern regarded as "vegetables," not only understand language perfectly but also hear voices they regard as God.

Source cited by Jaynes is 'John Hamilton, "Auditory Hallucinations in Nonverbal Quadriplegics," Psychiatry, 1985, 48:382-392.'

Did you ever read in the Bible that the devil can appear as an “angel of light”?

That still doesn't answer my question. How do we know the prophets who wrote the Bible, and Mary Magdalene as well, were not speaking with the devil in angel's clothing? I'm just pointing out how absurd it is to say that Mohammed's angel was surely a devil, but the Jews' and the Christians' angels were the real thing.

Are you saying it was the devil who appeared before the shepherds; that it was the devil who warned Joseph and Mary about King Herod, that it was the devil who appeared before Mary telling her she will have a baby called Jesus, etc....

The Bible talks about angels, but if you believe in them or ‘see’ one then you are a cultist or devil worshiper ?
How much sense does that make?

“I’m just pointing out how absurd it is to say that Mohammed’s angel was surely a devil, but the Jews’ and the Christians’ angels were the real thing.”

According to St. Paul, who is a primary source of Christian doctrine, any spiritual being who brings a message of salvation different in kind from the one Paul preached is an entity intent on deception and therefore evil.

The message of salvation that the muslim “angel” brought is far different that what Paul taught.

It depends if the angels are acting on God’s orders or they are in fact disguised demonic angels.

From the little I read in the excerpt it doesn’t sound like she conjures them up, she sees them around her. If she was using a ouija board or doing something to bring them to her, that would definitely be occultism. But if she’s seen angels all her life and she’s done nothing to make them appear, and can just see them, then it doesn’t appear to be her dabbling in the occult.

Jesus said you will know a true by its’ fruit...Mohammad’s “holy” book teaches killing the unbelievers. Christ’s new testament teaches to love your enemy.

Mohammed said that lying to infidels is aceptable. Jesus taught that Satan is the father of all lies....

Mohammed took part in wars, killing, taking of booty. Jesus did not.

Why would a “good” angel really appear to such an evil man?

Proof's in the pudding.

Just because a person declares himself a prophet doesn't make it so. He has to prove it by his prophecies (they must ALL come true) and he has to prove it by being true to God's word and the word of the Prophets who came before him.

(Deuteronomy 13:1-3)

It’s easy, you listen to what the ‘angel’ says and put it up against the Word of God. A demonic angel is not going to say anything against the Word of God.

My son was walking through the woods,(he was preteen) several hundred acres, when he heard talking and singing, as he moved forward and they got closer, he saw angles passing by in the sky.
They were of different ages, etc. and talking and chatting and singing. He had his dog, named Dog w/him. He said he looked down at dog and the dogs hair was standing on end, and said, “Did you see that?” w/humor. He had a great sense of humor and knew what he had seen.
At 22, he died of cancer on Oct. 2, 1986. The Feast of the Guardian Angels. Not insignificant.
David was an adopted son, we were privileged to bring him home at apx 4 weeks, 9 lbs.
He died not knowing any relatives who had died before him, etc.
We believe these were the angels who came to escort him to heaven. He was not alone.

What is the purpose of God sending angels to us?
It certainly not for the reasons she writes about.

“Byrne’s story begins with the telling of her toddler years, when the angels told her that her tiny playmate was the brother who had died before she was born. “

I’m sorry this is not the work of the Lord!

“Byrne’s story begins with the telling of her toddler years, when the angels told her that her tiny playmate was the brother who had died before she was born. “

That sounds like necromancy. She’s in contact with a familiar spirit which undoubtedly knows certain facts about her deceased brother.

My sister came into contact with a medium who told her she had contacted the spirit of an uncle who had died 30 years earlier. She was certain it was the case as the medium told her specific details of this uncle’s life she could have never known.

It’s very real and very dangerous, the Bible explicitly warns of contacting mediums and familiar spirits. Saul made this mistake by contacting the Witch of Endor and attempting to summon the spirit of the dead prophet Samuel. It cost Saul greatly.

Such things take discernment, since obviously it's possible that the person is hallucinating and delusional; or, second, that she is being visited by demonic entities; or third, that she's consciously lying. Then there's the fourth possibility, which is that she is seeing and conversing with angels, just as she says.

The fellow in the article who ruled out #4 pre-emptively, saying it's as likely as talking with Santa Claus, manifests an anti-scientific prejudice.

He ought to have said that there are tests one could devise which, while not proving #4, could go a along way toward disproving #1, #2, and #3. If her brain does not show the physiological characteristics or measurable abnormal activity associated with hallucination; if the entity she's in contact with worships Jesus Christ our Lord and teaches nothing contrary to faith or morals; and if she has a reputation for truthfulness and passes a polygraph: as I said, it doesn't prove, but it vastly increases the probability of #4.

There are studies in which a subject has a magnetic field stimulated on the side of the brain (right side, IIRC) just above the right ear. The subject ‘feels the presence of beings around them, though the pre4sences are not visual.

True,and very interesting.

There are all kinds of ways to induce paranormal experiences, including fasting, sleep-deprivation, electrical brain stimulation, and of course drugs. (The stories I could tell about weird intricate bizarre --- stuff--- when I was getting off of Ambien!)

But these things are all subject to clinical diagnosis. If they can be eliminated, one can really narrow down the field.
