From the Campaign Notebook - Delaware: The GOP Primary and the Candidates

I recently went to Delaware to check in on the hotly contested Republican primary. Battling it out for Joe Biden’s old Senate seat are two-time Governor and now Congressman Mike Castle and Sarah Palin endorsed, tea party backed candidate Christine O’Donnell.

I’ve never seen a more bitterly divided primary. Republican leaders say an O’Donnell victory would destroy the state party and pretty much ruin any GOP chances of capturing Biden’s old seat.

“I have no doubt if she by some miracle became the nominee she would lose the seat by unprecedented numbers,” the Chairman of the Delaware Republican Party, Tom Ross, told ABC News.

Congressman Mike Castle is considered a slam dunk to capture Joe Biden’s old Senate seat. Castle is a pro-abortion rights, pro-gun control Republican who often works with Democrats. Those traits have helped make him the most popular Republican in a state that leans heavily Democratic; Castle has twice been elected governor and nine elected as Delaware’s sole representative in the House.

But Castle’s moderate politics have enraged tea party activists and given Christine O’Donnell and opening.

“The Republican Party has lost its way,” O’Donnell told ABC News. ”They get behind candidates like my opponent who don’t even support the Republican platform, who continue to support the Democrats' agenda, lock-step-and-barrel.”

A Republican that votes against the Constitution is little good.

He isn’t a Republican. Why would the party support him?

Better a Democrat than a RINO.

We have already seen what RINO’s can do with Snnowe and Collins stabbing us in the back. Who needs another stab.

The party better wake up or there will be another party.

I tend to agree, but I don't even believe that's the issue anymore. This has become more about making a statement.

If she wins today Ross should be hammered out of his job and have the locks on the doors changed.

Castle is the kind of RINO bastard that would switch parties if he won, and it could give the senate back to the RATS!

You're being redundant. Like Rush said to his final caller of the day yesterday, just ignore the Ds on the ballot. There are no Democrats who are even remotely conservative anymore.

Basically.

I’m not convinced she can win either but I don’t like Castle and I don’t like the GOP establishment so why not knock off one of their prizes this cycle.

Conservatives don’t win with a Castle election. We’ve been down that road before in ‘04 and ‘06. the Liberals in the party screw any advance of a conservative cause they can. Party numbers only mean the Republicans get to change offices and act like Lords over their Democrat counterparts. Thrilling for them, not a good reason for me to support the guy.

They’ve been using guys like Kirk and Castle to advertisize the tea party candidates don’t scare them because they’ll be balanced out. Taking one out sends a message just as the NY house race did. Besides, they’ve been savaging the tea party candidates through second parties calling them extreme. They did this to Rand, to Angle, to several others. Payback is a ...

Priority 1, dump the Progressives, especially the R Progs like this creep Arlen Castle. The Progressive Republicans must be run out of the party or we get the same results that we got in 2006. Time to clean out a lot of the State GOP establishment also!

I don't like Castle either, but we're 9 down in the Senate and we need the numbers. Sure, DE voters can knock off one of their prizes and probably will (with Dems' help today), but what does that produce? A win for the Dems in November. We're either going to have the numbers or ideological purity. We're not going to have both.

One one hand, if O’Donnell wins, conservatives win and take more power in the party. If on the other hand, if Castle wins, Republicans win, and have a better shot at taking the Senate. What’s not to like in this bitterly contested primary? Wish every one was like this.

You and I are smart enough to do our research, Venturer. I vote based on my research. If I had to tell an idiot voter who to vote for, I would tell them to vote for Rs since Ds are generally unpleasant. Would you agree with that much, at least?

Delaware is a closed primary, so no “help” from the RATs. None asked, none given.

And why the fascination with the numbers when they are unreliable at critical times? It makes no difference how many Rs there are, if half of them are McCains, Grahams, Snowes and Collins?

Trying to follow the logic -

If Christine beats Castle, she can’t beat Coons
but the loser (Castle) would have?

Wife had to be at work at 7 when polls opened - will be heading out for the polls after 3:30 when she gets off.

Christi is really ticked that at 14 she can’t vote... Wants to vote for Christine (who she dearly loves) and Urquhart (who she met passed out stickers for at Dover Rally)

Absolutely!

We don’t learn very well - 2001 - Jim Jeffords...

Castle is a repeat performance...
