Are You Smarter Than A 1954 8th Grader?
blackinformant.com ^ | September 14, 2010

IMO this test should be brought back and not only for 8th graders, but should be mandatory for anyone to pass prior to being registered to vote!

Nevertheless, this definitely answers the question why so many of our children are clueless, and so many of us seasoned citizens actually do have a functioning knowledge of how our govt is supposed to work.

If these were questions for the 8th grader, what did they ask in college-level political science course at that time?

Nothing on the test about how to properly put a condom on a cucumber??? No extra credit for “feeling good about yourself?” Yep...todays’ kids would be doomed.

Just develop the questions further...
how do they get their jobs, what is their task, who do they report to, how can they be removed etc?

Eventually what to you agree with and what could be done better.

The Supreme Court was studied by their writings and conclusions. Effect of their rulings was big time essay work!

I would say that my 8th grade in 1977 was at a comparable level. Rather than knowing all the cabinet posts, however, we had to know the presidents. All of them. In order. Today, there are many more cabinet posts. We certainly went over the Bill of Rights in similar detail. Keep in mind that kids have a general idea of what will be on the test, study, take, and forget in a few months some of what they crammed for the test. That was true in 1954.

That is so true....could you imagine all the democrats passing and the Republicans (especially conservatives) failing. I seriously can see that happening...sadly....the reason for sadly is because the government has become so corrupt that trust is an issue.

My 9th grade civics teacher had similar expectations for his class. He drilled the Bill of Rights and Amendments into us until everyone had memorized them. (He was ex military and acted like a drill sargeant in class.)

Let’s see I would have been in 9th grade in 1968. So at that point they were still teaching the info contained in that test.

No. It would ensure that the Democrats vote and the Republicans don’t. You really think that this would be a fairly graded test??????

Thanks. Unfortunately, what college students learn today is basically the same as those college-level questions, without them mastering the basic facts like those in the past. Plus, how the constitution and political system built on it have been a tool of oppressions.

I was an 8th grader in 54-55:), so I hope I was smarter, at least then, than a 5th grader.
