Burial at sea fails when body surfaces
South Florida Sun Sentinel ^ | September 14, 2010 | Robert Nolin

FORT LAUDERDALE — A burial in his beloved sea was the wish of Daniel Scott Lasky, who died last week at his home in Hickory, N.C.

But his family's efforts to comply with that wish led to a fisherman's startling discovery and sent homicide investigators scrambling to solve the mystery of a body at sea.

Lasky, a 48-year-old grocery worker, died of Lou Gehrig's disease on Sept. 8. The next day his family packed his body in dry ice, loaded it into a van and drove to Fort Lauderdale, where Lasky once vacationed. After stopping overnight in Daytona Beach, the family and Lasky's remains arrived in Fort Lauderdale on Friday.

“Family members then fished for a spell in his memory.”

Perhaps they decided to honor his wishes just to have an excuse for a Florida fishing trip. In his memory, of course.

Since we did have a charter boat we had to keep up with the ever changing rules. We refused to do do the dropping of ashes at sea. I forget why but there was a good reason. If a body isn’t taken far enough out to sea the fisherman will just net it up & lose their catch. What is allowed in NC might not be allowed in FL either. I think it may go state by state. I do know that you can’t just drop ashes on the beach like you could yrs ago. The family should pay for the lost catch IMO or sue the charter capt for it. Those fisherman work long hard hrs for that catch. Why should they lose money?

"Okay, I’ll bite. Who was Toot?"

Toot was Obama's grandmother. That's his sister with him in that picture.

That's Toot in the chair in front

Lol! Thanks for the info.

Strange that Bammy and Michelle are standing as far apart from each other as you can get.

What a weird family.

Somewhere online there is a video of a family dumping ashes over a cliff and wind blows it back into everyone’s face.

Bodies turn up after months at sea. The regulations sound like common sense to me. Think if millions of bodies were carelessly disposed of in this manner.

"The burial would have been successful if Lasky's body hadn't floated back to the surface."

Yeah, and McCain's presidential campaign would have been successful if he hadn't lost.

Judging from the ashes, Toot was huge. :)

Toot must have taken a lot of documents with her to the incinerator.

Burial at sea traditionally involves the body being sewn into a heavy canvas envelope with a heavy weight added.

Spreading ashes as a “burial at sea” is hollywood nonsense.

Unless, of course, their burial at sea was arranged by the Mob.

I watched an episode about the Mob and bodies on the Discovery channel.

The Mob has lots (and lots) of experience dumping bodies.

First of all, you have to dismember the body - and that includes cutting off the limbs, head, and ripping the lungs out of the torso. If you don't do this, the body will float until it severely decays, and that could take a long time.

How does the Navy do this, anyone know?

I remember it requires an honor guard stationed on the fantail, possibly to fire a few rounds into the casket if it becomes a floater.

Think if millions of bodies were carelessly disposed of in this manner.

I doubt that would ever happen. Not enough interest. And the ones that do decide to go through with it would probably be cremated.

Gross. Who could eat a fish knowing it was swimming around a dead body?

Could be worse. They could've gone hunting for crabs and lobsters. PS. the term fish food is used for good reason.
