A plane-load of people flew into Britain from Spain without having their documents checked in either country, officials have admitted. Passengers on the Ryanair flight are furious that there was no system in place to check for possible illegal immigrants or terrorists. The plane left Malaga and flew into Bournemouth, where the 180 passengers walked out of the airport without showing their passports.

If it were a flight from some third-world country, I would understand the uproar—but Spain is a part of the Schengen area, so anyone flying out of there must already have had his passport checked by European authorities.

I flew in and out of AMS a number of times.
I did not find it any different then any other international airport. One does not leave the international section without
showing a passport at a normal immigration desk.
Actually it is my favorite airport in the world.
What does concern me is that in the EU, there are no longer any stops at the borders.
It is no different then driving from one US state to the next.
My longest drive was from Budapest to Amsterdam, with no border stops, just just empty booths, where there use to be
immigration and customs checks.
My wife and I regularly drive from England to Poland and back and the only border our passports get checked at is the UK one.
It's called Schengen (and it's not really an EU thing, there are countries in the EU that are not part of Schengen and also countries outside of the EU that are part of Schengen). The idea is that if you come from a friendly country, you must already have been checked by the friendly country's immigration officers, so there is no reason to perform the same check again and again and again. I think this is one of the few things about Europe that actually makes sense. :)

Yes, with ten years traveling Europe, I know all about Schengen.
While it is convenient to move between countries without
border controls, It does nothing to protect each country.
I think protecting a country should primarily be the military’s job. Not that your typical European country has much of a military worth mentioning, of course—but if they had them and actually used them to defeat the jihadists and whomever else was attacking them, it wouldn’t be necessary to worry about stopping them at the borders.
Wonder if the people were mostly young males
Ryan air is the same line that flew OBL’s family out of the US after 9/11 for Richard Clarke.
And Bournemouthe’s a place the Russians have since been trying to fly aircraft in close.
