From the story...

An Associated Press analysis found that 127 of the 7,174 public and private schools in California reported 2009 whooping cough immunization rates of 50 percent or less for kindergartners.

Well, someone should find out what Jenny McCarthy thinks we should do next. /s

All kinds of previously eradicated diseases are making a comeback, thanks to those who insist on leaving the border wide open.

"We’re all going to die; this time for sure."

We are? Are we a 18-mos infant, by chance?

I'm pretty sure no one as making the argument that this is some kind of national epidemic. It is however a plainly preventable childhood disease that can be fatal.

If you find humor in that. Good for you.

Just remember - no culture is inherently inferior to others, even if they bring drugs, disease, and violence. Nope. Every bit as valid as the culture that built the greatest nation ever to grace the face of the Earth.

I suspect that given CA's demographics, a large percentage may be illegals; but it's also possible that the granola-munching Jenny McCarthy "vaccines cause autism" crowd also are to blame here.

By the way, the British "doctor" who started this whole 'vaccines cause autism' rubbish was exposed as a fraud and stripped of his practice. Too bad they can't bring back to life all those kids who died because of his criminal stupidity.

Some of that crowd is right here on FR.

Fewer people immunizing their children + huge influx of illegals from Mexico and South America who are not screened for communicable diseases = major whopping cough epidemic.

Well, I think that without question the genesis of this outbreak would be linked to an illegal. But, I imagine illegal children that are enrolled in public schools probably have a greater immunization compliance rate than the upscale private schools in California. Why? Because illegal kids get immunized for free, the parents don't want the hassle of justifying to the school why they aren't immunized, and they probably have better things to do than worry about what an idiotic celebrity says.

The private schools, OTOH, offer an entirely different dynamic. I wish the story would have indicated what percentage of those cases came from private school. I would wager it's large - or at least disproportionally large compared to public school kids.

My daughter is a physician in a larger city, a resident. She saw her first case of pertussis just this past summer. It was a 9-mos baby, who was the youngest of three kids, none of whom have been vaccinated for anything, by parental choice, not because economic condition. Your words were her words when describing the parents - criminal stupidity. FWIW, the child lived.

On the contrary: I believe everyone should be vaccinated against everything, willy-nilly.

ODH thanks for the added input on this health problem. It certainly rings consistent with the feedback demographics I have observed in this matter re:inoculations.
I would like to see more info on this Brit Dr. who started all this "inoculations cause autism."

In our house in SC, my wife, daughter and 4 week old granddaughter all have whooping cough. No illegals nor public school for us. We also suspect that another friend of ours has it. Strange...

'In our house in SC, my wife, daughter and 4 week old granddaughter all have whooping cough.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'll say a prayer, for sure.

It's very likely that either your wife or daughter contracted it just from casual contact. Who knows, it very well could have been an illegal in a restaurant or somewhere else. From what I understand, it's quite contagious.

Of course, a 4-week old is too young to be vaccinated. This is why vaccinations for all children is so important. It's not just to protect them, but it's to protect their little siblings or friends who aren't old enough to be vaccinated.
