NYC stops hiring firefighters amid bias suit

NEW YORK — City officials on Friday said the Fire Department of New York won't hire any firefighters until a new entry exam is created to replace one a federal judge said discriminated against minorities, which is expected to take at least a year.

A federal judge had ordered the city to choose one of five temporary methods for selecting applicants who had already passed the rejected exam as a way of adding to the department in the meantime. But the city's law department said in a letter to the court that they wouldn't select one because they all involved some sort of race-based quota.

"The hiring quotas ... are bad public policy, and we believe not justified by the law," said Corporation Counsel head Michael Cardozo.

It was the latest setback in a lengthy legal dispute with the federal government over discrimination claims at the mostly white fire department. U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis ruled in August that the exam was unfair to black and Hispanic applicants after the Justice Department sued on their behalf in 2007.

Garaufis said the city used the exams to appoint more than 5,300 entry-level firefighters between 1999 and 2007, cheating at least 1,000 minority firefighters of chances to join a force of roughly 11,000 at the nation's largest fire department. Of the 3,100 black candidates and 4,200 Hispanics who took the exam, the city appointed only 184 black and 461 Hispanic to the FDNY.

The judge said black and Hispanic applicants had disproportionately failed the written examinations and those who passed were placed disproportionately lower down the hiring lists than whites.

The city is appealing the decision.

I weep for our country and the direction it is being forced to take.

When the Second American Civil War begins, I hope that this type of nonsense will be permanently eradicated.

What the hell is wrong with people?!! How damn hard is it to study and pass a test? NO! I don’t want to hear sh** about your “culture”. 2+2=4. Period. The answers are either wrong or right, not in-between.

I haven't seen any of them. According to the rest of the article minorities aren't applying and when they do they score low. So the judge has basically ordered quotas.

Note that the City was sued by The Justice Department in 2007. The bureaucracy keeps running, no matter who's in charge.

“The judge said black and Hispanic applicants had disproportionately failed the written examinations and those who passed were placed disproportionately lower down the hiring lists than whites.”

As for the candidates who failed the written examinations: Boo Freakin’ Hoo! As long as everyone is taking the same test, I don’t see anything here but candidates who failed to pass muster.

As for “those who passed...placed disproportionately lower down the hiring lists”: I’d like some more information. If it is simply a question of the overall scores or qualifications being lower than other candidates who happen to be white, Boo Freakin’ Hoo (redux).

If, however, there is some arbitrary factor in play, I’d like to know the details of it. Not because I necessarily suspect racism (I don’t). But because I wouldn’t want to see *any* candidate for *any* job disqualified by some arcane bureaucratic rule.

So how exactly do you have an exam that discriminates against minorities. You only ask the ultra top secret questions that only whites would know? Now they’re supposed to dumb down the test in order to get less gualified people. Wow.

“Has anybody ever seen some of these allegedly discriminating questions?”

For years they’ve been rewriting the SAT to make it more “culturally sensitive” and “racially neutral.”

It hasn’t made a bit of difference in the gap between scores of racial groups.

New York city couldn’t afford to hire new ones if it wanted to.

According to the article they are going to pay the firefighters $2 million a month in overtime to 'make up' for the discrimination.

1) Please print your name ________________

(Black Robe) “The question is obviously discriminatory since it’s asked in English.”

2) 2 + 2 =

(Black Robe) “This is obviously a racist question!”

76. Biff and Buffy are hosting a soiree at their brownstone in Manhattan. Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck is catering the event. All of the right people are there (know what we mean?)

During the preparations an candle made from organic beeswax, from bees fed only rosemary, catches the organic silk drapes from Nepal afire alighting the entire residence.

All entrances are blocked by the caterers dollies and helpers and the guests ascend to the 4th story roof which has no outside access from the ground and cannot be reached by ladder trucks.

What wine was served with the Oysters Rockafeller, exact year and vintage please.
