Skip to comments.UK to confiscate paychecks in private sector? (All your salaries are belong to us)

Well, if Donald Berwick’s favorite health-care system is to survive, the Brits have to do something, don’t they? The British government’s tax agency has proposed a new process for employers in the private and public sectors to pay their workers. Instead of actually giving the money to the employees, they’ll pay Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, which will then decide just how much to allow the workers to keep:
The UK’s tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate tax and pay the employees by bank transfer.
The proposal by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) stresses the need for employers to provide real-time information to the government so that it can monitor all payments and make a better assessment of whether the correct tax is being paid.
Currently employers withhold tax and pay the government, providing information at the end of the year, a system know as Pay as You Earn (PAYE). There is no option for those employees to refuse withholding and individually file a tax return at the end of the year.
If the real-time information plan works, it further proposes that employers hand over employee salaries to the government first.
What could go wrong? Well … plenty, actually. I’ve worked as a midlevel manager at firms that use direct deposit for pay (which I use myself), and I’ve seen mistakes made. One employee got paid $14,000 for one two-week period, which the company had to claw back. The next fortnight, he got 56 cents in his direct deposit, which took two days to correct. Now imagine having to deal with a government bureaucracy when these mistakes get made, and one can imagine the disasters that await. Plus, thanks to this process, the government will have access to everyone’s bank accounts, too. Goody!
But the problems are more than just pragmatic. This is a symptom of tyranny, where the government takes the attitude that it owns everything and has the responsibility for redistributing wealth as it sees fit. If the UK proceeds down this path, there will be no more private sector; everything will become an arm of the government.
I realize that the Boston Tea Party has much different historical implications for the British than it does for Americans, but perhaps it’s Tea Time in the UK, too.
Wonderful. This is what America can look forward to, when we become more like big nanny Europe.
This should cause a “Reichstag” moment in the UK!
This reads like a parody but if true, it is positively frightening and, in a sense, the inevitable result of ‘creeping socialism’. This is why the left has to be vanquished in the November 2nd election. There is no more room for compromise and accommodation to socialist government policies. None.
Wouldn’t it be cool if Prince Charles would quit talking to trees and start acting like a king?
If Brits allow this to happen then they are imbeciles. There are also a considerable number who don’t care because they don’t work anyway.
Britain, we hardly knew ye.
Say hello to the Soviet Socialist Fief of Londanistan.
The UK is leading the way for the rest of the West to follow in to the abyss of destruction.
And implement the next day by any means necessary including martial law.
Then the IRS would tell you that you may hope to see any balance due to you, begin to arrive between April 15 and August 15 the following year.....
.....there’s a Beatle’s song floating in the back of my mind....
Does Pelosi have close relatives in England?
British Tea Party anyone?.....
This is no symptom. It's the real thing.
This is a half-baked suggestion and I doubt it will survive the planning stages. If something like this was actually introduced into a bill to put before parliament, there would be an uproar...
You know what this reminds me of ?
“so that no one can buy or to sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.”
Seriously, this idea is only possible because of the technology in our times. It is evil...too much power, too easy to use as a weapon, too tempting, too hard to fix a problem. It is the nature of “mankind in government”...our technology hasn’t changed the nature of this, it’s amplified if anything.
God help England.
They need to exorcise the ghost of Karl Marx from their soil. The English immigrants to the new world seem to have left a gene sewer behind.
The problem with ideas like this is that they never ever die. Millions of leftists will consider this a perfect transition solution towards the institution of true Marxism.
After all, it doesn’t matter what the sign on the door says. If the money you get paid comes from the government, you work for and are dependent on the government — which is exactly what they want.
The socialist caucus in America are going to be wetting their panties in excitement as they look for ways to make this a reality in America.
Uproar, that is so weak, they need to take to the streets and burn down parlament. That goes for the US as soon as the first Obama communist SOB brings it up.
Was Karl Marx resurected in the UK??
Will this half-assed, tyranical idea, if actually implemented, apply to the muslims, too?
Bump to read again after the disbelief wears off...
As so often happens here, when somebody in Britain flies an outrageous policy kite as part of a political debate, flocks of Freepers are all too ready to believe it’s actually happening, and react accordingly.
Hey, be careful what you say, we’re subjects of tyranny now don’t you know.
Never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn, I suppose.
