WASHINGTON Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked legislation that would have repealed the law banning gays from serving openly in the military.
The partisan vote was a defeat for Senate Democrats and gay rights advocates, who saw the bill as their last chance before November's elections to overturn the law known as "don't ask, don't tell."
With the 56-43 vote, Democrats fell short of the 60 votes needed to advance the legislation. It also would have authorized $726 billion in defense spending including a pay raise for troops.
Senate Democrats attached the repeal provision to the defense bill in the hopes that Republicans would hesitate to vote against legislation that included popular defense programs. But GOP legislators opposed the bill anyway, thwarting a key part of the Democrats'

Vote count looks “bipartisan” to me.
Excellent!
And a whole lot of other crap too. Hooray for O’Donnell upsetting Castle. Looks like that put the fear of the tea party into the RINO Senators
Standby for tonight’s news headlines on the MSM:
REPUBLICANS BLOCK FUNDING FOR SOLDIERS IN COMBAT
Thank goodness! This class of Democrats will try anything to gain favor with their minority and as seen now, very controversial bills attached to the defense bill! Do they have no shame?
Things are really getting desperate when they attack the most honorable of our traditions.
Is Morecowsky still playing hooky?
It is obvious that there were some dissident RATS voting "No" as well.
Did Harry Reid vote for it?
Republican’s block?
Remind me, who has control of the House and Senate again? =.=
No wonder the Democrats try to keep the military votes from being counted. We know what the vast majority of military thinks about accepting practicing gays into the armed forces.
Democrats fell short of the 60 votes needed
Not Republicans..
Well true, they did. But not because they have sufficient Democrats to pass legislation. The Senate breakdown is 57 (D) - 41 (R 2 (I). So they need at least one Republican on the best of days, with both I’s voting with them, to get the 60 needed.
No, but only as a parliamentary maneuver in order to bring it to the floor again at a later date.
As it should be.
From the article. Evidently gays in the military is not a popular position in Arkansas even if both senators are RATs. At least in an election year.
Remember the DREAM act (backdoor amnesty for illegal aliens under age 35) was also in this bill.
Call it election year theatrics to help the Democrats bring out their base in November, because that's all it is.
Reid loads the bill with DADT, forcing military hospitals to perform abortions, and amnesty for illegals then votes against the bill himself.
Then comes out and says the Republicans denied funding for the military?
Are people in Nevada stupid enough to reelect this POS?
>>Did Harry Reid vote for it?<<
Reid voted no then came out and said the Republicans blocked funding for the troops.
